almost 2 years ago I have changed the following: " drums, bearings, rims and wheels and also the springs including bolts and nuts on my trailer. But now I notice that the trailer tires are both worn on the inside tread only and very badly, for the outside area looks as new. The axle and spindles are straight, no bended in any way, I have to mention when trailer is loaded tires look tilted to inside, hwn unloaded its looks fine. It could be the springs or maybe hub and bearings bad installations? I include a few pictures when installation of the parts, any idea?

I would bet the axle is weak and when the boat is loaded it has a bow in it.
This causes the camber to change as you are seeing with the tires tilted in at the top.
Time for a new axle...

Agree with Gary. Overloading or weak structure will cause the insides to wear out. Run a long straight edge across the axle with the boat on it and see if there is a bow. Repeat with the boat off the trailer and compare.

Ayuh,... Sounds, Severely Overloaded to me..

Or the axle is corroded and flexing.

I was getting wear on the insides of my tires on my 1989 loadrite trailer. I had a tire blow out about 50 miles from where we go in Ontario,Canada.

After we put the boat in the water, myself and the camp owner lifted up that side of the trailer and next to the spring perch, I could see a very small line of corrosion. I got measurements and built my own axle. ( next trip was a month later so I left the boat up there )

The original axle was 2" square tubing with 1/8" wall. I used 1/4" wall tubing. The original axle stubs went in the axle about 1" . I drilled my brand new axle stubs from the back and added a 1/2" pin two inches into the stub and three inches into anothe rpiece of steel the same diameter. I had our best welder at work weld this for me.

I drill the top and bottom of the axle with 1/2" holes where the new extended axle stubs went in the tubing. I plug welded the axle stubs in place and also welded the ends. I also drilled shallow holes for the spring nut to locate the axle on the spring.

New hubs and bearings completed the new build. I purchased my parts from eastern marine but I'm sure iboats has a vendor that has them too.

This is very easy to check but I too feel the axle is an uncambered style and is very likely overloaded. So here is a very siimple check.

Load the boat with everything you normally travel with. Find a level parking lot and park the rig in a spot where you can crouch down about 30 feet in back of the trailer and eyeball the center of the axle. I'm betting you will see it is bowed downward which tilts the wheels inward at the top. Ovbiously this will wear the inside edge of the tread. Next check is to do the same thing when the trailer is empty. Very likely the axle will be straight. If it still has the downward bow however, the axle is bent or you have a cambered axle that was installed upside down. A cambered axle has an upward bow in it which when the trailer is loaded, the axle flexes and the wheels now sit straight. But you still need to verify that you have not overloaded this trailer. If you replaced the bearings, did both bearings have the same P/N? If so, you have a 2000-2200# axle and your boat and trailer are way over that rating. Just from the picture however, the axle looks like it is a 3500# variety. The trailer should have a load rating tag on it somewhere. One last tip -- hub dust caps are driven on by the flange -- don't hammer on the center!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine was doing the samething had to change axle and all is good now. New tires wore out on the inside in less than 1,000 miles and outside looked brand new.

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

I had the same issue with tire wear and it was a bent axle. But mine is the u shaped axle and I could see where I whacked it just behind the wheel under water on a rock or something at the ramp. Doesn't take much to be off for the tires to wear quickly through the tread.

Wore the OEM tires right out and I put two new ones on without knowing what the problem was. I thought it was just cheap tires. Put two new tires on and they were bald in one 150 mile trip

Take a pic from the back of your rig like others have suggested.

By the look of that last pic that trailer looks to be of a lighter weight model for that boat. Check the capacity plated as mentioned.

Was this trailer ever used with another boat? That trailer's frame diameter looks to be as lightweight as mine is for my 15 foot aluminum. Did it come with the original package?

Does the girl pictured in your avatar ride with you? I don't think she is putting any extra weight on that axle though :D

btw if the gal turns out to be the cause of the prob I suppose she could ride with me ... LOL

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

Guys!

the axle is brand new "homemade" the tube is "rigid" and galvanized, spindles are for 1 1/16 bearing at both ends. When I install the new springs. hub, etc, etc. I leave the original axle, the new one has less than a year in use. Actually the axle in the picture is the one that the trailer comes in when I bough the boat, you can notice rust in one of the ends. I believe that this trailer is for this boat.

The boat is a Glastron SSV190 19 footer.

The bearings are 1/16 (both). I sure that the axle is right, the bearing and hubs installation, will double check with all your tips guys.

Nice girl, right??

The rims and tires pictured are brand new, the ones that comes with the trailer was changed cause its walls looks very damage but the tire looks great with normal wear. Im almost sure that this was from original equipment.

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

ok Hitch up trailer got the the neatest truck stop that has cat scales. (clean out the boat and the truck be for you go.) Then get the gross vehicle weight for the tow vehicle the boat and the trialer, add the togather and you should be within 400-500lbs if you weigh any more check the flotation in the boat for water infusion, if you weigh with in weigh range replace the axel, and bearings yes again. Make sure you are getting the retainer nut tight enough.

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

If the tires look tilted in at the top the axle (homemade) is not right. You changed every thing else with factory stuff but the axle again if the tires are tilted in at the top it is not right I just went trough the same stuff sorry.....

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

I agree if the wheels look tilted in when the boat is loaded then the axel is flexing. Only explanation that would cause the wear you are describing. I had the same problem with a trailer on my previous boat. It had a sqare tube bent axel shape. Replaced the axel and problem went away. My last boat was a Glastron SX 195 with an EZloader trailer made specifically for that boat.

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

My assumption is correct. If the spindles have 1-1/16 inch bearings inner and outer, you just built a 2000# axle. chances are you now have bent spindles or the axle spindles were not parallel with the center line of the tube when welded which creates an alignment issue. The long and short of this you could have used 4-inch diameter pipe for the axle with those spindles and you would still have a 2000# axle. Like anything structural, the structure is only as strong as its weakest link.

Re: Tire wear inside BADLY!!!!!

Silvertip, you are close enought regarding the solution of this trouble. I have spoken today with the guys at the "boating supplies" I use to go. He told me that the trouble could be the 1 1/16 spindle, those spindles usually are used up to 17 footer boat. He recommend to use a 1/8 wall galvanized tube with 1 3/8 inner bearing and 1 1/16 outer. I will go that way, actually the 1 1/16 spindles look to "weak" for a boat like this. I know that my boat is heavy but just want to follow manufacturer original specs for the trailer, this one is suppode to hold up to 1750 pounds. Actually I will discard loosen hubs since never had a broken bearing in any way. Will take a picture from the back and will let you know guys. :)

Im pretty sure that with the new setup regarding the spindles will correct the problem.

Thanks you guys!!!! :)

Take a look to this picture I found.. At this time everything was new except for the axle. Look to the left tire already tilted for the inside but not the left one. Please ignore the fenders.
