Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Check this out Pony, the plywood you choose is important but you don't have to use the absolute best available.

http://www.glen-l.com/wood-plywood/wp-index.html#index

Most importantly it needs to be exterior rated (adhesive) and of the proper thickness for your design. Surface quality is next up, you probably want at least b-grade both sides, c and d are pretty crummy (like CDX house sheathing). You may also use treated but with caution, it must DRY and that's not the way it is sold. Otherwise your resin will not stick and that's bad mmm-kay. It's pretty common practice to cut out all pieces and coat them, soak them in epoxy or polyester on all sides and edges before assembly to ensure that they are watertight. If you have the time there are a couple other threads going here about building or restoring little boats, learn something from other peoples mistakes! :D

Well there is my start sort of.....I'm thinking I might get a little better plywood as you guys suggest.

My idea is to make a jon boat style boat, as there are less curves and has a flat bottom. Maybe 10ft long or so. I want to be able to put it in the back of my truck and drive to a river or small lake and throw it in instead of taking my aluminum

Nice Tracker but Wimper coulda built that with only a twelve pack :D (He would have needed twice the resin though ;) ) Don't mess around man, put the 9.9 on there for starters and go from there. Are you using tiller or remote controls?

very interesting link there Wimperdink.....thanks. The jon boat in there is similar to what i am considering. I may not.....ok i will not be... following the plans but will use it as a guide for me to lay out my structure. I love making stuff on the fly.

Tracker you move fast... looks great... I agree with calico though after messing around with my 4 hp I wish I had a 9.9 to play with... feels unstable for about 5 minutes but by the second time out I was "power surfing" :D Standing up while under full power of the 4hp. dont forget the gps for the speed readings. Your going to find out that you'll need to keep your weight near the front of the cockpit when you get moving. it'll dip the front when your at a standstill but not a problem when moving.

Pony i'm amazed you read the whole thing :D I see now that A.D.D is a comunicable disease. That link gives a good base for ideas or complete plans if you pefer. My next build will be a mixture of plans and my own personal touches. Fiberglass is messy so do yourself a favor and get ya a box of rubber gloves and lotsa cheap paint brushes before you start :) I found that cheap food containers from a dollar store make good resin mixing cups. They flex and pop out the hardened resin and makes it easy for reuse.

Thats a good looking motor for a good price. I saw that earlier when I was browsing but I'm thinking I need to wait till I can find something between 15 and 25 mph. The price is right now but he doesnt list shipping cost and I'd hate to get stuck with $500 shipping charge :D And I have to ask permission to use paypal before I bid.

Amazingly amoungst all the redneck funnin there is actually some good info posted here, if you can read between the lines. :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

so is it pretty much coat(s) of epoxy, then glass tape on seams, then resin (mixed with hardener.)???

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

here is a good tutorial on stitch and glue... it includes step by step info on how to seal the seams.
http://bateau2.com/content/view/46/28/

you'll need to coat the seams down with your mixed resin. let it soak until it wont take anymore and is glossy, sand it rough, then put a fillet in the seam, sand it so there is a nice transition from side to bottom, then wet your tape with resin and apply it over the fillet along the seam. Make sure you keep air pockets from forming under the fiberglass tape.

Resin that is not mixed with hardener will not set or dry.

I did see a suggestion to soak the wood in resin not mixed with hardener until it wouldnt soak in anymore then add a coat of resin mixed with hardener but I cannot confirm that the undercoats will harden. Anyone tested this yet? Larky?
