Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Speaking of ideas... I've got mine settled... But none of you are going to know what it is until I start the build... If I even tell you then. Might just wait it out til the end :D

Heck even then I might not let you know I built a boat...that way if it sinks there no proof....

ah come on... We all know there will be pictures... Of frames of course, not templates :D mlm

EDIT: Anyone know where I can get a cheap trailer?

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Well, it's been a productive weekend. 3 corner braces and seats to go, but I'm holding on the seats until I get the inside sanded and maybe painted so I'm not having to sand odd corners. The epoxy should be here later this week and I'll probably pick up the paint next weekend.

Here are some progress pics:

Both. I'll also be putting a strip of glass on most joints.

I have drilled more countersink holes.....

lol what qualifys as "most joints" I found out the hard way on my minimax that every joint needs to be taped... but your not gonna have as much water comin over that top as I have with my 7.5" tall boat :D

I likely won't glass the two vertical joingts on the sides and I'm debating about glassing anything above the water line. The entire boat will be epoxied and the entire bottom glassed. With 2 adults, she should have 10-12" of freeboard and is gererally considered a displacement hull.

This is just my opinion but I would recommend glassing the outside of all the joints on the hull at a bare minimum then if you just want to do the bottom around the inside for strength you should be fine. but I still think the back cornors and front joint should be glassed on the outside too just for GP.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

ok i'm about to start my next project as I've got the trailer frame ready for a hitch... just gotta find some 2" square stock steel for the hitch and i'm ready to have the trailer workable.

I was gonna keep it a secret until I could see if it was going to work or not before I made a fool of myself, but, I think I already accomplished that with the canoe in two :D . so with that out of the way I have some preliminary drawings to show of the project.

As many of you know I was going to build a tear drop camper to pull behind my lil 4 banger car for my travel expiditions cause I hate getting caught in areas with spencive hotel rooms.

Well as of late I became the owner of an older 10 hp sailboat motor that, since i'm a newbie to boating, have come to find out that that motor is better used to push a barge as opposed to a mini hydro.

Anyway to make a long story short I wanted my next project to be a boat, but I need the camper too. So I'm going to kill three birds with one stone.

My project for the sailboat motor will be accomplished.
Camper will be built, and it will be a boat as well.

Now as for the picture, Please understand that these are not drawn to scale, and the measurements are not accurate as I have to find out what I need for transom height, and i've decided to cut 8 inches out of the height of the entire thing to keep it down to the height of my car. It will probably only be 40" tall instead of 48" if I find I need to go taller it wont be more than 44" tall. The top will be raised, during water operation, on cornor poles to deal with fuel fumes ventilation and my inability to put a window in the front curve.

Here is my final decision on hull shape as i'm pushing it with a sailboat motor and dont need an extremely efficient hull anyway. Oh also the door arrangement will be modified to a differant position since only having about 22 inches to work with for a door might not be sufficient for my tired butt climbing in and out. I'm considering a platform on the hitch and making a decent size hatch in the front top curve for the doorway.

lol Its official... your the new couple of Iboats. who says you cant find love on the internet? :D Oh and by the way when I get rich mass producing my camper boat you wont be laughing so hard now will you :D j/k

p.s. have any of you looked over the spitfire plans at all? I just took a closer look and they pulled 50 mph with a 20 hp motor. They tell what tweaks they had to do to acheive that speed. thats very fast for a 9'10" craft

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Tracker got any updated pics of your minimax?

Calico I got to looking at that sneakbox again.. as well as having a rounded bottom, its 12' long, giving you more room for added weight distributed throughout. You dont think it would take a fair bit bigger motor than the minimax?

Dave you gonna build some templates soon? :D

wimps chat is open for those of you who are bored.
