you know if you sand enough the skin starts to pull from under your fingernails and it hurts. Using the da was so much easier.

How much gel have you used? How big is your boat? Just trying to get an ideal of how much Im going to need. Boat looks great. Are you blocking the top or just hand sanding?

Re: transom and floor replacement

proshadetree, it is 15 foot and I have used almost 5 gallons so far. I still have to spray the knock dow n seat and spots I sand thru. 5 gallons will be cutting it close. It is hard to figure because you spray it so thick, I thought I only needed 3 to 3 and a half gallons. If you have any questions or need help dont hesitate to ask or call me.

Did you use duratech? How well did the wagner spray? Im still searching out info. Also told some people on sidewinder forum about this thread. Thanks for the info. Im thinking 5 gal gel and 5 more duratec. Im going to have to do mine multiple times. Once or more with flake to get color then clear thick enough to sand and buff clear.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I did not use duratech as anything you thin gelcoat with harms it's long term wearability. If I had thinned it. it would have been much easier to apply as I could have used an air gun. Ondarvr is the best source of info on gelcoat. The wagner sprayed alright but left alot of orangepeel which you have to sand out but it put it on thick enough unthinned.
Tonight I did more sanding(what a suprise) and just to check how well it would work I mixed up 50 mL of gelcoat and 1 mL of mekp and applied it to all the spots I sanded thru to white with a foam brush. It worked great. You cant tell they are patches. They sand out pretty easy. And the color matches perfectly. It also made the gelcoat stretch alot further since I didnt have to spray a 6 inch diameter patern. I think I will have enough gelcoat to finish the boat now. I also sanded, filled, and sanded the knock down seat. I am spending alot of time working on it but still have a long way to go on sanding. Once I get it all smooth with 180 it will go real fast. Have I mentioned I have no fingerprints now.

Hey SKIBUM1M,
Sorry about the fingers. Like archbuilder stated you can use tape to save your fingers. I have used clothe tape similar to what they wrap base ball bat handles in. It really saves the hide.
Looking forward to seeing more pic's.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I dont think I could work with my fingers taped. I need to be able to feel the surface as I sand. Thanks Proshadetree it is nice to know I can help others. I sanded for 6 hours tonight. The progress is slow but rewarding. If I can ever get it all sanded to 180 without any white showing I will be happy.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I am almost finished sanding. I buffed out some areas tonight and realized I have to go get some more sandpaper tomorrow. It looked great at an angle but if you looked streight on close up there are scratches. I will post pics tomorrow. I need to get samples of vinyl ordered because I will be doing the interior very soon.

Ok, I finished the cap tonight!!! I buffed it all out with the air buffer and it came out pretty good. Then installed the windshield and alot of accessories.
I also scored a new boat cover at gander for $75 because the straps were missing. Still waiting on photobucket. It is so nice to see it look like a boat again. Tomorrow I will install the rubrail and put it on the trailer so I can have my garage back to start on the interior. I ordered samples of vinyl today. The pictures are almost done so here we go...

A little bodywork on the flip down seat

One of my patches where I sanded thru. I used a foam brush to touch it up.

The anti skid had become too smooth so I dabbed the side of the foam brush in the wet gelcoat and it worked perfectly.

Here it is all buffed out

Sorry it's been so long since I did a post but that should make up for it. Now there wont be much till I get some seats and vinyl. Tomorrow I will get some pics outside and hopefully someone out there is good with photoshop and can work on some ideas for the purple graphics for me.
