i have a big problem. i just became the owner of a 15' alumacraft side console with a 35 evinrude. the back is decked in with storage compartments and the wooden transom is riveted between the deck and the rear of the hull. well the transom is rotten and i'm trying to replace it but i would have to drill a bunch of rivets to to take the old one out and put the new one in, i really need to keep the back as light and as strong as i can get it the motor is a little biger than it needs to be.
thanks

Re: transom

There are no short cuts. Dig in and remove what you have to in order to access all of the rotted wood. You can use Nidacore or Seacast, or simply build a new wood transom (to size), glass, etc., and you're good to go. What I have learned from my rebuild (and I am still learning) is that, 1.) the contributors here are some of the greatest guys on earth and 2.) there are no short cuts 3.) Keep searching and reading and asking questions.

Good luck on your project and above all, have fun!

Re: transom

Did the wood go all the way down to the hull? Does it go all the way behind the boxes back to the sides of the hull? Are the boxes alumawelded to the hull or are they riveted? Are the Angle braces on the stern riveted or alumawelded? If rivets then drill out the rivets, remove everything so you can get to the transom wood, remove it all. Fabricate a NEW transom using standard ext. grade plywood back to the same thickness as the original. A 35 hp motor should only require about a 1" transom. Two pieces of 1/2" ply and a couple of layers of 1.5 oz mat and some poly resin should do the trick. Pay close attention to the edges to ensure everything is sealed up tight. If you drill any holes, make sure to seal them up when you put the screws or bolts back in. If the wood does not go back behind the boxes then it should be fairly easy to replace. If it's all alumawelded then you're gunna need to find a good alumawelder. Get a grinder and grind the welds off to remove everything. That's the RIGHT way IMHO. Others may have a different opinon.

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: transom

Wass,

I would check out NIDA core pourable transom compound. IMO it is easier to work with than Sea-Cast and a LOT cheaper. Also, the NIDA tech folks are a big help with the project.

Re: transom

Slightly larger pictures with more detail esp. in the area were the boxes join the transom would be of great help. Also of the top cap of the transom and how it is attached.

I used the old transom wood for the templet made the new one , then coated it with "gluvit" and put it back in. I need to update some pics.I haven't been workin on her much due to it being hunting season but I am ready to get back after it... Good luck.. Re: transom

thank you for helping me out on this, ive done a transom before just not one that i had to cut welds and drill so many rivets i'm worried about hurting the hull integrity of the boat. all under the decking in the back that i cut out to remove the transom was filled with dens foam, will it be necessary to place that? also ive read that truss head bolts with nylon lock nuts are best to use after drilling rivets but would that be fine for the bottom of the boat or should i put rivets back in? i haven't drilled any rivets on the bottom yet but i think i will have to because the is a transom support on the port and starboard side that each have six rivets in the bottom

Re: transom

good progress, had to cut out allot of aluminum. just trying to put it back together just as strong as it was before, i cant use any of the original aluminum so i thought of using aluminum angle for bracing

Re: transom

Looks like I'm doing the exact same thing you are. I have a 1976 Rhyann Craft. The transom was about 70% rotted. Not sure how it was holding the weight of my 35 HP Chrysler. I had to cut a few brackets and also cut the top of the side boxes in order to get all the wood out. I'm going to start putting the wood back in within the week.

Any suggestions on a particular resin to hold wood together?

Re: transom

i used behr outdoor wood sealant which is for deck sealer but i put allot of coats on it and i backed it with silicone between the wood and aluminum. you can go to your local paint store and they will probably advise you to use some special epoxy or paint with a name you can hardly pronounce and cost allot $$$. with the the transom being a vertical surface and with todays marine grade wood i think you shouldn't have a problem with a cheaper outdore wood sealant or paint. if you have any other questions let me know, mine came out great and with zero leaks so im happy with it

Re: transom

One has a choice, and for my project my choice would be epoxy, glass, and marine wood--plywood is fine if you wish as long as you seal it well. Go cheap and you'll do it again. If you need a caulking, use 3M 5200 marine.
