I went to the doctors office today to discuss my weight issue. When I stepped on the scale, I weighed 270lbs. OUCH! And I say ouch for a reason. My joints are killing me, I'm aching all the time, and I just know its because of my weight. When I talked to the doc about how I eat and that I believed I'm a stress eater and binge eater she decided to put me on an appetite suppressant. I've never been on one, but I figure its a good way to get started. I have to go in every month and show at least a 2lb weight loss per month to get a refill of the suppressant. What was good though before she prescribed anything was she asked if I was ready for it mentally. I told her I was, I just hurt too much lately and have to get this under control. She said as long as your ready, its going to work out for me.

I hope so.....I've already changed my diet, and I'm weaning myself off soft drinks. We'll see how it goes. Wish me luck.

Good luck, Pirate. The "battle of the bulge" is a tough one. It would help to have someone to act as coach and cheerleader by your side.

Soft drinks are huge.

Smaller portions more times a day.

Whole grain, and high fiber, stay away from white carbs.

Good Luck- take it one day at a time. Tough time of year to be strict on yourself, but you can still make an excellent stuffing from whole grain bread instead of white. ;)

Yeah my wife and I just talked about how Thanksgiving is gonna go. I'm going to do my best to keep the portions down and pass on the dessert.

Almost any desert can be made sugar free as well by using sweet n low or Equal instead in any pie or cake. ;)

Portion control is huge. When you eat, serve yourself half of what you normally would. Eat it and let it settle. If you are still hungry, you can always go back for more.

If the doctor says you are a stress eater, be able to clearly identify your triggers, and if they are unavoidable find a substitute for eating (like working on a new project boat). Ditto on the binge eating. If there is a trigger you need to learn to identify it and avoid whatever triggers the behavior.

+1 on the whole grains.

Find snack foods that are healthier for you. My personal favorites are apples and nuts. One for when I need crunchy and sweet, the other for when I need crunchy and salty.

Find a way to incorporate veggies in every meal. Vegetables contain a lot of good nutrients in them, and also leave you feeling full. I personally keep containers of diced or eating-sized veggies (peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, onions) and can throw them in my eggs in the morning, in a salad at lunch or dinner, or even just as a side by themselves either raw or sauteed in some olive oil.

There are a bunch of "wonder foods" that have been identified as helping reduce fat or boost metabolism. Try incorporating these in your daily diet;
Green tea, Pomegranate juice, red wine, blueberries, Calcium-rich foods (Greek yogurt, milk, Broccoli, cheese).

I've been where you are now. I was over 300 Lbs in April of 2009. I made a decision to change my lifestyle for the sake of my family. I'm now 195 and feeling great. Let talk about joint pain! Bursitis in my shoulders and elbows. 3 knee surgeries for ACL and meniscus repairs. I woke up every day in pain. I still have some pain on some days, but its nowhere near what it was.

Best of luck to you. Its a long, hard road. Its totally worth it in the end.

Good luck!

I guess I'm blessed. I'm 52 and I weigh 15 lbs. more then when I was a teenager. 145 lbs. and 5' 11". Can only wonder what it would be like to be overweight. Of course if we both get seriously ill, your going to live longer then me. :p

Go for it!!!! Definitely on the smaller portions, graze during the day on tasty fruit, carrots, etc. It'll fill you up with low calories, also lots of water. Eat maybe 5-6 times a day, high fober.
I do a banana and yogurt drink every a.m., try to bring a sandwich in from home(Low sodium Salami, Mozarella cheese(lowest fat cheese and I love it) and mustard on wheat bread or roll.
I cut the chips down to maybe once every week or two, no sodas, gave up wine, and still have tasty meals - broiled or bbq chicken, pork and make fresh tune salad(light, in water, no mayo, use lemon , lime juice and spices - yummy) and maybe a spicy chicken sandwich from Carls Jr maybe once every week or two. Baked potatoes too, red ones are tastiest for me, just a tad of margarine, spices(love spice) and some ketchup :)

I did this just for my possible gall stone issue, not weight loss, but my doc loves my diet!
And more importantly I do!

You dont have to eat bland, just cut fat off any meat, etc Youc an still treat yourself to some tasty , healthy stuff!! Good luck!!!

Re: Ugh...back from the Doc and weigh more than I ever have....

I know that what I have to say is not politically correct, but I'll say it anyway.

For years I stayed on what I call a "bird seed" diet -- virtually no burgers or steaks, lots of poultry, pork and fish. Of course I enjoyed my Italian breads and pastas. Weight was a problem, and cholesterol was even more so. Around 350 back when they thought 300 was alright.

Finally I switched to the Atkins - high protein with some fat, and close control on carbs.

Voila. Weight came off like shedding clothes, and cholesterol dropped below 200. The bloated feeling was gone, and my energy level was much better.

Went for a routine checkup and my doctor asked me what I was doing. When I told him, he gave me the obligatory speech on the fact that no studies had confirmed the safety of the diet. Went back a year later for another routine and he told me that he had tried it himself and lost weight, but just couldn't refrain from the carbs, so he got off it.

Now, five years later my weight's in control, cholesterol (two weeks ago) is 154 (HGL up and LDL down), and my energy level is still high. (I have added Lipitor to the routine though.)

In the interim I've read over and over where the medical establishment has grudgingly admitted that the diet produces more weight loss than all others and that it appears to benefit cholesterol levels in most people. But they still don't recommend it...! Not a single study has shown the predicted deterioration of long-term health, but they can't bring themselves to back the high-protein/low carb approach.

I've talked with at least a dozen people whose own results or those of a friend or acquaintance have been similar.

So, I go on my way with the occasional bacon/eggs breakfast, the steak or pork chops when I want them, etc. Of course, the pasta and white breads are out, as is pizza. I can still have a few beers when I want them, but not the typical snacks. The thing is, it's a diet that does not leave you hungry, so it's not a strain to stay on it.

Thanksgiving, here we come!

I used to weigh 206 and got down to 139. I'm now back up to a managable 160 and I feel fine. It can be done, it just takes motivation.

If you drink vinegar before your meal you mine as well drink Jack Daniels and at least get something out of it! lol

Good luck, I am in the same boat, so to speak. I hit 265 recently, most ever.
I'm 6'2" and would like to get down to 200-210.
When I was 18 I was 6'2" and 140# LOL.

Congrats on you doing something before your health slips away.
My brother struggles too, his motto...'just shut your mouth and stopping eating so much junk'

Stay away from diet soft drinks, watch your white carbs, white bread, muffins (my bad habit).

Be careful of that Atkins diet, it works, but it will raise your blood pressure and cholesterol.

Good luck man, just think how good you'll look next summer on your boat!!

I love the fact that you need to show progress for the refill. It sounds like you're doing the right thing by seeing a Doctor. You're paying her, make sure you keep listening to her.

Some improvement every week will have you in that Speedo this summer :D
and more importantly help with the pain for the long term

Yeah its good she set it up that way, but in reality it was her sneaky way of staying legal. What she put me on is one of those regulated drugs and she has to keep a paper trail to insure people aren't abusing the scripts.

SPEEDO??!!??! At this point by the time I get my BVD's around my waist it spells out BouleVarD!!
