Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

Fun project you have there! FYI, ... at the time your Ulrichsen was built (late 60's), Ulrichsen had been bought out by Luhrs, and actually Luhrs had been bought out by Bangor Punta (as your literature indicates). So at that time, buth Luhrs & Ulrichsen boats came out of the same mold in the same shop in Marlboro NJ.
As for the early history of the companies - (Henry Luhrs) ?Luhrs Sea Skiffs? began in Morgan N.J after WWII, building lapstrake skiffs in the 18' - 24' range. (Andy Ulrichsen) ?Ulrichsen Sea Skiffs? began in Keyport N.J. (close by) also after WWII, and also built lapstrake skiffs in the 20' - 30' range. At times if Henry Luhrs got a order for a boat in the 30' range he would have Andy Ulrichsen build the hull & he would finish it. Somewhere in the early 60?s Henry Luhrs bought out Andy Ulrichsen. (Andy Ulrichsen partnered up with a guy named ?Wilson?, and for a number of years they built ?Ulrichsen-Wilson? skiffs in Monmouth Beach N.J.. Sometime around 1967 +/-, Henry Luhrs sold out to the large conglomerate Bangor Punta. Henry?s sons John & Warren stayed on for a couple of years before buying a small central N.J. boatbuilding company that built lapstrake skiffs in the 20? ? 27? range. The name of that company was Silverton, and John & Warren turned Silverton into what it is today. Warren?s interests were more in sailing & he went to St Augustine FLA to start up Hunter sailboats. Around 1974 (first oil crisis) John wanted to come up with a more fuel efficient boat & ended up creating the ?semi-trawler? Mainship. In the 1980?s John & Warren bought the family name back & once again began building ?Luhrs? boats too.

My family had this 1951, 30' Ulrichsen for 11 years (I spent my first 9 years on her). One beautiful boat!

Sweet old boat Ned, thanks for the info. Is there a chance you could e send me those brochures?

Here's where the batt switches, charger and AC panel will go. The eng batt will be mounted directly below and the house batts will live on the port side of the step.

I'm going to run some heavy cables to the bow for a future windlass.

I would be glad to. One of my interests are the boats & boatbuilders of the Jersey shore, so I have some other pieces of literature for Ulrichsen also. I'd be glad to mail you photo copies of the Ulrichsen information I have.

Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

will add secondary pump and float switch for dual redundency.

Good idea, mount the auto pump a bit higher than the manual switched pump to keep it above any puddles, sloshing on and off burns the switch out. If the auto pump turns on, then turn the manual pump on.

Looks like a good project, especially the way you're going at it.

I'm glad to see a larger project being done in the forum. I love all of them (Starcrafts included :)) But I need some inspiration for what I have coming up. I have a pocket cruiser similiar in size to yours and I will be watching your ideas. So far looks like great work.

Yes very nice work. She's going to be real solid with all those new bulkheads and bracing. I'm pre-occupied with my repower right now but next year I want to do many of the same projects you're doing.

Another week of slow progress, I did go to the boat show today so it was a lost day, except, I found my next boat

Most of the components are mounted, and most of the cables are run. I'm pretty happy with it and once everything is tied down it will look pretty good.

Awesome work man. The woodwork fits like you are a finishing carpenter.

Keep it up. I'd love to do a big boat but I don't know if I have the patience :)

Wow great work! Looks strong and sturdy. I had a question about how you are connecting the deck frame to the existing stringers? I see you standing on them are they glassed or screwed in place?

Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

The aft deck frame sits on a pair of hull stringers and is glassed in. The cabin sole sits on the forward stringers and was set in PL and screwed down.

A little break in the weather so I went ahead and laid the first layer of mat on the outside of the bulkhead.

House batt mounts. I set them in the glass before it set up

Pics of the weeks progress.

Got more done in the feed panel.

Feed to the helm, still need to run the 2/0 aux power feed. The 2/0 cable on the bottom is the ground, the 4 ga is the helm power feed. the upper wires are always hot bilge pump, keep alive and cabin lights

just a pic of a cabin light, lot of work to get to this point

Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

Super-nice work. I just installed the same Guest battery charger in my Luhrs on Saturday.

Headliner looks very nice also.

It looks like you're moving from big pieces to smaller and smaller pieces, which is a sure sign of progress.

Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

Thanks for the props.

I'm sure there is something I've overlooked, and will have to cobble in later.

Removing the rats nest at the helm is the next step, then it's on to the powertrain. Maybe by this time next year I will be putting on the finishing touches.

Scored some nice 12 circuit fuse boxes and a nice shore power box from a boat I wired last year that fell victom to a towing accident. Just had to pull the eng and drive for the parts.

Steady and slow goes the progress.

Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

Wiring is one of my favorite parts. This must be one of the highest cost process for the manufacturers. They always seem to do such a poor job. I'm glad to see you are doing it right. Looks great. Have you given any thought to your onboard charging system? It would be nice to have a nice onboard generator. Are you going to have A/C onboard?

Re: Ulrichsen Alure 25 Flybridge

I am planing an alt upgrade to at least 100 amps, I will cary a portable generator. A/C is on the list near the bottom.

I'm with you, the manufacturers definately don't waste a lot of time or materials on wiring. I tend to overkill my wiring needs.

The weeks progress

Glassed in the bulkhead and ran the new tank vent line

002.jpg

The port sail panel roughed in, I stuck the steps up so I can match the angle with the port alaskan bulkhead.

I will add a hatch to access the house bank from the cabin
