Thanks Jonesg, I'm on vacation until Thursday. After that, I'll be working on pulling the outdrive and getting the engine out. Not sure how I'm going to get the engine out just yet.

The best thing you can do is to read the threads on this forum. OOPS! thread hull extension in progress is good. The completed projects forum is also good to get info on what other guys are using and how to's. Use the search function. When OOPS! started his boat he was a novice, like you,but he read everything he could get his hands on and scoured these forums. He had never attempted any of the things he got himself into with his build but a year later he is one of the "go to guys" on this forum. Lots of guys start there restoration before they read up on it and have cost themselves extra work and money. Right at the top of the restoration forum there is a thread with all the info on the safety equipment you need. As you can tell there are lots of people here with tons of experience that are willing to help and they all started out just like you, with a boat that needed fixing. 3 words of advice,BEFORE you start,Read, Read,Read!!!

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

I bought a cherry picker from craigslist, it pulls an engine out in a jiffy. I think I paid $125 for a used foldaway cummins picker.
I also picked up a rolling engine stand from the same guy for $20 and my 375lb outboard is mounted on that for the winter.
I use the picker to lift the back of the boat, placed on blocks then pull the trailer, they have lots of other uses besides plucking engines.

Once the engine and deck is out of the way you'll know what to replace, I got rid of anything wet.
As much as I wanted to think "it'll probably be ok" it just didn't make sense to get under the deck and leave wet stringers in place.

Its hard to make a complete project list from the beginning as its not possible to know the complete condition before you can get in there and see, so a decent plan is just to focus on the removal part, engine-deck etc first.

Well its 5pm and still light outside, I have to make a list to get things in logical order for the final repairs.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

guys, thanks for the advice. I have been reading a ton. One question I have is how difficult it will be to pull and re-install all the shift, throttle and steering linkages. I think that the shift and steering are on a transom bracket that the bell housing bolts through, but need to get into it further. Is this stuff tuff to do? I'm not a mechanic, by any means, but I've replaced the water pump in the lower unit.

The steering, shift, and throttle cables aren't too bad. Will need a good service manual to put them back together and properly adjust.

Since I'm not too far away I've offered to drop by mulligan's place and offer a few tips in person when he gets back (all of which I've learned here)

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

hi buddy.....im a little confused here.....are you doing this project this year or next....if it is still solid......you can run it for a season no problem....then when you pull the motor.....thats when you do the stringer first ...then the transom.

it sounds like you care comitted to the boat....and that is great.

for the project it self....those big motor bays are a snap to do the transom in....you will not have to pull the cap off. the transom cut out is still a long ways away.....but it is not that hard.......but dont worry about it right now.

the really good news is....you have lots of time to read here and learn.....the hull ext thread is good as well as the compleated projects forum.

start by thinking of the type of material you want to use.....

pm me again with this link when you need somthing.

TO ALL MY BUDS.....

I dont have much time, so im whipping down to dockside chat....ill post there....i miss ya all !

cheers

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Thanks Oops. When I started this thread, I wasn't sure when I was going to do it. Since it's still February, I decided to just tear into it and get it done now. So, that's where I'm at. This week, my goal is to get the engine out, gas tank out, windshield off. Then get it in my garage, instead of 15 miles away like it is now. When those things are done, I can really get serious about throwing some time at it.

Had an awesome motivational talk from Jsercsa last night on the phone!! I'm ready to rock and roll now!

Oh, and I spent this weekend building a shelving unit of 3 shelves 16" x 8 feet long in my basement to keep all my boat parts and fishing gear from the boat organized so i'm not misplacing and losing a bunch of stuff. This way i can pull stuff, keep it all together and properly labeled. My very own "marine center", haha.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

heh heh heh....johnnys cool....

ok....first things first......take lots of pics and make lots of drawings...thae lots of measurements........

you have yo get your wood asap...(if you are using wood)....there is lots of choices....the three main are pressure treated.....(you wont have time to dry it...so thats out)......or marine grade....or ext grade......

you will need to get it now......the ext grade needs to be dryed about a week .....the marine grade could use a week........(just for the heck of it)....

you will also need to determine what type of materials....poly or epoxy.....

if you are going to order off the net....get it now.

most of the stuff you can get locally......if you go poly....make sure its non waxed...(the stuff they sell at the local dept store is waxed)

then check your list of tools......

have at that motor and lets get atter !

cheers

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

I'm going to use epoxy resin for the glassing and jointing. Poly for all the "hot" coating of raw products. Does that make sense. In my readings it seems epoxy is a little stronger and more forgiving for a rookie. I'll pay the little extra for those qualities, particularly, the more forgiving part.

Not sure on the wood yet. I need to do some shopping around and ask some questions. There is an awesome mill up the road from me. I don't know if they deal with plys, but i know they have a kiln. Maybe let me borrow or rent some space in it for some sheet stock.

Looking at my schedule and the weather, maybe wednesday for pulling the engine. I'm a little stressed about being able to put the engine bell housing and transom plates back together . I'm not a marine mechanic, but think I can do it. Hope so.

Oh yeah, and big thanks to John! he is great. offered to help in any way he could.

83....your going to get into a big ol can o worms if you use some epoxy and some poly.....

pick one and stick with it.....

i just saw you are in mich.....so depending on where.....johnny can probly do it over the phone ....(yes thats blindfolded)

i would suggest standard ext grade ply...once encapsulated in glass....the marine wont last any longer that you will notice.

there are other products....like penski board or ni-da core....but they are expencive and will far outlast your desire to own the boat.

cheers bud

Actually, i did mean poly resin. I didn't see any harm in coating and letting it dry, then following with epoxy resin for the cloth work. But, I'm good with polyurethane too. Probably be lighter as well, huh? And don't worry bout the calling part, I will! We'll be salmon fishing buddies by the time this is all over. I'll have ya hooked on that in no time flat!

B-C ?? as long as its ext, plywood it will work great , ooops is right you have to get that drying asap, it can take a month to dry!!

Once you get it space the pieces with some blocks in between them so the air can flow over them , and turn the fan on and leave it on !!

If we dont it will rot from the inside out !! [ did you notice the we ] ??? lol John
