V Belt Problem

Hello everybody , hope you can help. My 1989 Omc Cobra keeps chewing up v belts. I suspect pulleys may be out of line or even wrong belt fitted (got new one on order). Now this sounds really dumb, but I have been trying to sort it all morning. The old belt was shredded so I had a spare one (not sure if right size so ordered new one), anyway I went to fit the belt I had just to see if it fitted . This is what has got me baffled. There does not seem to be enough room for the belt to fit between the lower pulley and the inside of the engine mount. I cant believe you have to undo the front engine mount to fit the belt? (surely not). So, Should the belt fit without having to undo the mounting. I have the manual on a CD but the layout of were the belt runs is not shown, sounds stupid I know but does anyone have a diagram of the route the belt should take.I'm pretty sure it runs were I think it does but through experience I no longer take anything for granted. My next move is to check the alignment of the pulleys with each other, is it common for them to move? If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful. Thanks again all the way from the UK.:)

V Belt Problem Update

V Belt Problem Update

Hello guys, further to my previous post. I have just done some research and found a few things out. When I lifted the engine cover I noticed a lot of black dust and splinters.I think this is the remains of the previosu belt which on isnpection appears very thin and has no teeth left on it. Also I remember last season she threw the belt off. what do you suspect the problem may be and how do I go about fixing it.
Thanks.:)

Re: V Belt Problem Update

Check pulley alignments, check for rust, rough spots, etc... in the grooves of the pulleys.

Ok thanks,I will do that in the morning. Regarding fitting the v belt. Am I right in saying that it can be done without removing the front engine mounts?

V belt problems

Hi people. Just a quick question, I have not had chance to look yet but, out of the three pulleys I have. The crank, the alternator and the top circulator.Which one is most likely to have moved. Does anyone have any experience of this happening to them.I imagine the pulley 'fit' is quite tight on their individual shafts so I gather it will be a pulley tool job?
Thanks:rolleyes:

Re: V belt problems

If any i'd say the alternator depending on how it's mounted sometimes the bracket can crack and break, but check all bolts on the others to make sure they are tight. what omc engine is it, also you can just keep posting a reply to your original post, dont have to do new one everytime,,,easier to follow.

Re: V belt problems

Ayuh,...
Why don't you just tell Us what's Wrong, rather than asking these Loaded Questions,..??.....

If the Crankshaft pulley has Moved,....It's probably Rusted out.....

If the water circulating pump's pulley has moved,... The bearings are Shot....

Ditto on the Alternator.....

I imagine the pulley 'fit' is quite tight on their individual shafts so I gather it will be a pulley tool job?

All 3 will be Very Different......

Noted guys.Thanks. A bit of discipline called for I think. Will check all the pulleys tommorow. Still baffled over the belt though. Can it be fitted without removing the front engine mount?

Re: V Belt Problem

First thing make sure belt is the right one.Just cause it's on there don't mean it's correct. Then run the engine checking for alignment. Then check for corrosion on the pullies.Got pics????? Jerry

Re: V Belt Problem Update

What motor is in it? That would help....a picture would be worth 1000 words too..
Rust on the pulleys will eat a belt up..

Re: V Belt Problem Update

Didn't i read he has a 3.0 cobra?

G-d i think im seeing triple.

There is no spacer i think on the cobra front mount. Same as stringers.

Takes 5 minutes and 2 people. And a 1/2 wrench, and a pipe, 4-5 feet.

Loosen the four bolts on the motor mount.

Have someone leverage the port side of the motor with the pipe, and remove the port bolts and starboard bolts.

Have him leverage the motor up till you can slip the 2 belts around the mount.

Have the person lower the engine till you can slip the bolts back in and tighten them.

Now i bet you wonder why i said 2 belts, i tie a spare belt around the mount so if a belt breaks on the water there is a spare belt ready to install.

All you will need is a 1/2 wrench and a pipe or screw driver to leverage the alternator to tighten the belt.

Oh to the question as to why your breaking belts, is the alternator freezing up and the belt is squeeling and burning?

All 3 posts are now merged into a single one.
Reads kind of funny, but all the info is in one place now.
