Ya know Haut , I think its very insensitive that you and others post a photo comparison between "OPRA" and "W" on this forum.....just tasteless and mean spirited... with possible racial overtones ;)

W is an expert at putting someone else's huevos on the line, just never his own.
Not a lot of thought went into that one did it, name one president that has ever put his own huevos on the line.

Hasnt anyone else picked up on this.

Forget everything else...

Why the heck cant we save some of these jobs for American companies? I am all for a global economy, but dadgum, we should save a few things for ourselves.

One more thing, they keep saying that many of the port procedures are classified. Why the heck would we trust a foreign company with classified documents? I dont care what country, we should keep those clasified documents within the USA.

Ken

Now for a big exception.I support Bushes decision about the ports deal.
DP company was formed only a short time ago and a lot of the ownership is Danish.
The UAE has always been strongly pro American and is far more democratic than its neighbors.I may not like a lot of arabs, but I do like these arabs.Actually at murderd Rabin's funeral there were 2 representatives from the UAE.The fact that somebody is moslem and arab does not make him a terrorist.
The part that I dislike is that the maritime administrator who was appointed last month conveniently used to be a mayor executive in DP and that just smells of Bush cronyism.

US companies were given the chance to make a bid for P&O.!!

D P World will have nothing to do with the classified opporations of these ports, they have purchased the rights to load and unload containers and to charge the shipping companies for thier sevices. They will not be responsable for the port security or for giving customs clearance.

RPJS, yep I know they arent in charge of security, but they will still have access to confidential documents.

Yes, I know US companies submitted bids, but as far as I am concerned these types of things should be limited to American companies.

I would only expect other countries to do the same.

I dont want the Germans running our airports, or the Outer Mongolians serving food to our soldiers.

Can you imagine if some foreign company purchased KBR (they do many services for the military and yes, they are for sale). There would be heads rolling.

Same thing in this case.

Ken

Ken,

America is either part of the global economy or thier not, you can't cherry pick.

If you want American companies to opperate your ports then they have to compete with the rest when it comes to making an offer.

Your government had the chance to block this deal if it considered it to be a threat to security on the 10th Feb. As it would have the chance to block any bid made to KBR.

I think if rolmops thinks the UAE are trustworthy and have good relations with Israel, I would have to go along with him.

Knee-jerk, emotional responses aside, I agree also that being an Arab does not make one a terrorist. However, I do think caution is merited---ANYTIME we're dealing with a foreign government.

Another thing---it seems we all have differing ideas as to what this deal is all about, and no one seems to really know. Also, I would question how much any one person here would know about running a port to begin with.

Another question that comes to mind for me is, if a country or an individual is willing to make a substantial investment in another country, would they do so, and then do something to destroy that country? Maybe there are people who would do that, but I think they'd have to be incredibly NUTS. We know who's incredibly nuts, I think---they've pretty much tipped their hands.

The bottom line is, I don't think we (the little guys) know enough about any of this to be sure one way or another about the wisdom of letting the deal proceed.

RPJS, reading the latests news byte indicates just what I was thinking. Confidential documents will be available to non-citizens and they dont even have to be stored in the USA.

Its the pricipal of the thing, not any real terror or security thing.

I dont think too many Brits would be happy if the French became the administrators at Heathrow airport.

Ken

Re: W growed a pair

it is funny that once the UAE deal came out, after the fact it was a done deal, all the politicos came out swinging before studying the issue.
but it seems DP is gonna control 2 ports in the UK as well as 6 here in the states. the brits dont have a problem with it so why should we? at least thats what the spinners are spinning.
biggest issue I have with security at the UAE is the UAE is NOT a country unto itself but a coalition of 7 kingdoms, not all of which are allied with the US.
I noticed Jordan on the US ally best buddy list. how many jordainians have attacked US and western intrests?
and I belive 3 jordanians were recently arrested in Ohio for a bit of mischief.
I guess I am distrustful of any govt saying we will have access to documents. especially when I look at the history of relationships with middle east countries, rulers and religous issues.
but I guess if its ok for the UK its good for the US.

However, based on recent stupidity in our government I would gladly swap a W, a Cheney and thrown in one lying Rumsfeld for a queen.

It could be and it's extremely likely that all this is is a political blunder.

Along with everything else you really have to wonder about politicians that can't even do politics right.
