I did all of that - it didn't work.

Actually, I was just being lazy - I usually copy a long post to the clipboard before submitting a reply, for this very reason.

BTW, if you highlight your text and depress "CTRL C," you copy to clipboard in a manner that is faster and easier. If you have to paste back to a page, you just depress "CTRL V."

Re: We're Gonna Get Hammered - Oil Spill!

Since I am back anyway - I was out in the boat today, shooting (photography) some wildlife and a fresh water diversion from the Misssissippi River. My location was a large lake that is about 50 miles north of the Gulf. It is also about 80 miles from the well.

While I didn't see any oil in the water, I could very plainly smell it in the air. I'm aware that folks located to the south of this, have smelled the oil, but this was the first time that I have smelled it as far north as where I was. I don't think that this was the result of unseen oil in the water, but that it was from the southerly winds that we have had for the last couple of days.

My guess is that the personal injury lawyers will soon hit the airwaves and papers, looking for clients with respiratory problems.

I don't think I would want to be working in BP's risk management dept., about now!

The Unified Command web site is OK, but the information is several days old. ???
Just want to clarify for MOI. Are you referring to deepwaterhorizonresponse.com?
Today, the info was dated today.

Any of the local news stations in New Orleans will have a web site with more up to date info. Start with this one:

http://www.wwl.com/

Yes, thanks.

I assume today is a pretty big day as we might find out if the new smaller
cofferdam is going to work.

WWL AM 870, I can get that here in S. IL. late at night.
Listened to it during Katrina.

I heard something yesterday, and don't recall where . . . something to the effect that the leak is transitioning to more methane than oil. That would seem to be a good thing. Anybody know about this?

Yes, that is true. My dad is one of a couple of hundred that have been mandated to go to Houston to get updates, literally by the minute, on what's going on. Basically, they depleted the oil in this well and now its just blowing a lot of gas, or mostly gas. This pollutes a lot less than oil. It's not good news by any means, but its not bad news either.

My dad even met that guy in charge of the environment or whatever, Salazar. He's way up in the Obama administration. Now at least some people might give some credibility to what I had said earlier. Not really a problem on this forum but certainly on another one it was.

Seems like a methane leak is 1000 times better than an oil leak . . . IMHO, no one would even know there was one unless they were told and there is no assessable damage except lost revenue . . . At this point I think anyone would accpet a few flame bubbles if anybody was there to light them.

I'll try to find out about the oil to gas scenario. It may be correct, but I have to wonder about a well that BP was apparently going to announce as a major find, depleting oil in a matter of weeks.

Remember that the production casing is only a 7 inch pipe - while I'm sure that the rate of depletion is greater when flowing in an uncontrolled fashion, the size of the pipe still restricts it to a degree. Also, the current estimate of the spill is about 5 million gallons. That is about 119,000 barrels - not a lot when thinking of a reservior as a major discovery.

Yeah , there must be a lot more down there. Using your figure of 119,000 barrels, thats only about 9 million bucks of crude so far ($76/ bbl).

Anybody know the general timeframe that a well gets played out?? I mean, what parameters are in play to make it economically viable to drill a well? Most cost a fortune just to get set up.

IMO the "oil to gas" just sounds like propaganda. Whatever the truth is, I hope it is controlled SOON!

You can bet that the well in question costs hundreds of millions of dollars to drill. I think I saw a figure that suggested that the drill rig alone was a million per day.

I don't really have an accurate clue as to how long the reservior should last. Just given the costs and the fact that 3D seismic tells quite a bit about a formation, you can bet that BP wasn't looking for a negative ROI.

Yeah, thought it would be a pretty spenty venture. I think I heard that million dollars a day thing too.

BTW- I just saw some video footage from an ROV on the Weather Channel. It showed one of the breaks in the pipe, and there was a lot of oil charging out of it. Along with what looked like bubbles.

Made my heart sink:(

Re: We're Gonna Get Hammered - Oil Spill!

We are now hearing that there may be an attempt to do a "junk shot" as soon as early next week. This is a technique that was used in Kuwait, after Desert Storm, when Iraq blew a bunch of wells out of spite. Basically, it involved shooting ground up tires, golf balls and some other things, into the well bore, at extremely high pressure.

There has also been talk about trying to connect some tubing directly to the riser, rather than trying to use a cofferdam. This idea caught ny attention, both because it seems like a simple, but effective idea and because it makes me wonder what the status of the 2nd cofferdam is. The last I heard, it was being prepared for use, but I haven't heard anything about it since.

Re: We're Gonna Get Hammered - Oil Spill!

Here's the latest ....

The reason why there has been no news on the smaller cofferdam, is because BP has been weighing it as an alternative. The other choice is the tubng that I mentioned in my last post.

The plan now is to use the tubing, which is refered to as an "insertion tube." This pipe is 6" in diameter and will be put into the main rupture point of the production riser, which is 21" in diameter. The insertion tube apparently has some sort of a gasket on it, to close up the gap created by the differences in tubing size.

We shall see .....
