your rod is kinda overkill for snapper fishing, eventually you'll need a light tackle setup but for now use a 6/0 or 7/0 hook and take a piece of cutbait, ladyfish, mullet, grunts whatever you can get and cut about a two inch chunk and bury the hook in it. I'm assuming you'll be fishing bridges or reefs, so you'll need some weight too, depending on current maybe a 4 or 6 oz weight and drop it to the bottom the reel up a little and wait.....and wait.....and wait.....make sure your drag is almost locked down, when you get a hit start reeling cause that grouper is gonna head back into them rocks he calls home, if he does give him some slack, he'll come back out eventually.

I have some light tackle, but cheap ones at that. I think I paid around $40 for each...

Squemish?....hehehe....I had trouble hooking a live shrip! Tiny one that is! I'll get used to it after a few trips....I hope!....As far as species, I'll take what I can get!

Looks like a life of trolling feathers for you amigo! lol...You'll get over it..but fyi...live squid will BITE you with their beaks...Ya have to cup them gently half covering their head and tentacles..

p.s.
How in the world will you get whatever you catch OFF the hook if ya cant put a live bait on it??

reverse the procedure and get the bait on with the same attitude! sans pliers, of course!

I've been fishing twice on my newly acquired boat. I know I will be doing more of it so I went out to Walmart and bought myself these. Now, Im a newbie and dont plan on catching 60+ pound fish so keep that in mind...I paid $102 for the combo.

Your new rig is nice. For value for the buck and user friendliness it's hard to beat a 209 Penn (or a number9 Penn) level wind reel and a matched rod. I have used Penns (and many other brands as well) for many years and have been well satisfied with them.

Still need to get used to it. When I cast the line becomes a mess inside the reel :(

Its all in the thumb...practice with a weight, just small, short casts, more like lobs.....you'll get the hang of it..

Geo,find a woman from Mexico, like I did, they will hook anything and never even flinch, and cook the crap out of it until you have to take them with you.Just think of the days when yo first touched a p_ss_y.Same as your bait.I am sure that you got used to it.Go fishing, you have the gear to do it,just have to turn into a FISHERMAN,see that word MAN at the end.Remember it.

You did well to steer clear of braided line for a first-time setup. It is fabulous stuff, and I use it almost exclusively on my spin gear. It is unforgiving when it comes to birds nests, and you have to learn a few more knots to use it.

Berkley Big Game has accounted for many many fish that I've landed. I use flourocarbon leaders for picky critters - but I wouldn't stress over that as you're starting out. You can catch plenty with your setup.

uh.... comparisons to other rites of passage aside... (I'm with you, Kev... really?) you'll get used to hooking live bait. You'll get over your reluctance after the second or third fish you catch with the stuff. Be wary of toothy critters when unhooking fish - but that will come naturally with some repetition, too.

Yo, Kev! I think we have more in common than starcraft. Now I know why you go for a cheap boat. It's the tackle that's got your dough. Well, me too. I could buy three or four more of my boats with what I've got wrapped up tackle. And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Re: What do you think of this Rod and reel combo?

I fish the reefs near coast of GA. Started with the $30 walmart special rods. Fishing for catfish up river and moved to small sharks and whiting with it. Caught tons of fish. Now have a TLD 25 combo that cost about 250 and Penn 4/0 combo at about $110 as my heavy rods but most of my fish are still caught on a $40 spinning reel (penn Captiva 5000 and berkley 7ft medium rod that probably cost about $20. That thing is a workhorse.

For bait cut squid and shrimp are salt water staples, esp for newbies that just want to catch a lot without targeting specific species.

The MOST important thing is fishing in the right spot. For example if I am fishing over a sunk barge in 50 ft of water being off target by as little as 15 or 20 ft will mean sitting all day and barely getting a nibble. While being over the structure brings a BITE on every drop!

here is a pic of a Red Snapper I welcomed aboard the boat and you can see a $50 reel/rod combo that it was caught on. :D :D :D
