1997 Toyota RAV4 4-banger pulls my 16' boat. No Joke!

By the way, TAHOE BOB will you please post more photos of your boat somewhere? That small photo you use as your avatar almost looks like my Geneva Motor Boat.

Here's a picture of mine, it still needs some work, but she sure is fun!

Does it count if I only have to tow the boat from the fifth wheel to the ramp? :D

"85 GMC HD 3/4 ton, 350 4wd with 3:73 limited slip diff. Bought it new, my only vehicle in 21 years. Towing an 18' Crestliner Canadian on a tandem axle trailer. Tows great, a little overkill but better than being under equipped! Haven't had a payment in 18 years. ;)

Re: What does everyone tow their boat with?

For the nice grippy ramp at the marina I use a 97 Dodge 2500 360ci cargo van. It's nice to be able to step into/out of the front of the boat from inside the van !

For the muddy river ramp I use an 03 Durango 360ci because it has more aggresive tires than the van. I wear tall rubber boots to keep from getting my feet wet.

2002 Nissan Xterra with the supercharged V-6 towing a Lund 18'.

We love it - plenty of power, and big enough to pull and stop the load gracefully, but not so big that it's a pig to drive with or without the boat in tow.

Photos on my shareproject link. Have a look - what's not to love?

Re: What does everyone tow their boat with?

My first car was a Country Squire with a 390 Interceptor ... hook it, haul it, dont worry about it.

Embargo of 79 came along, and a buddy of mine loved the Squire so much he bought it ... just as I made a quantum leap down into a Vega GT.

Ah but ... GT! Heavy duty suspension, brakes, larger clutch

and SWAY BARS!!!!

Had no problem pulling or stopping the 18 Glaspar, and didnt even know Hydro I was back there.

Now, the time I towed my 67 Impala lead sled convertible 40 miles with the vega ... UGH, god I wish I never got rid of the Squire!

76 Econoline 150 was the towing behemoth, set up to tow the Sea Craft, 25 feet of solid fiberglass ... torque master 351 Windsor, worked C-6 with cooler, gargantuan Hellwig sway bars (three ton van that handled like a slot car, too fun!)

On the other hand, the scariest was the 66 Econoline, yanno, flat nosed falcon based tin box. Loved to pull, but HATED  to stop

These days, the 05 GMC Crew Cab Z71 handles whatever towing chores come its way, mostly dragging the Honda around. But its hit so steep ramps and some pretty slippery slopes, so Id say its a keeper!

Re: What does everyone tow their boat with?

We tow a 2000 18 foot Stingray 180RX (140 horse), on a Venture single axle trailer. This all weighs about 2,800 lbs fully loaded up. We tow it with either our 2003 Toyota 4Runner or our 1994 Jeep Cherokee. Our tow ramps: a steep sand and gravel beach on Skaneateles Lake and nice gentle concrete on the Potomac River.

The smaller Jeep: a 4 liter straight 6 with the better 4 wheel drive system of the time. It can be in all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive in HI Gear, but LOW gear can not be used on paved roads as it locks the center differential. Our Jeep always had trouble going down the very steep, twisty and paved road to Skaneateles. The wheels would bind up in LOW 4 Wheeld Drive.

The newer Toyota has a 4.7 liter V-8 and a much better more flexible 4/All wheel drive system. The center differential can be locked or unlocked in either high or low gear, meaning I can use LOW on that paved twisty road without tires rubbing and putting stress on the driveline.

Both were bought with factory tow packages rated to 5,000 lbs and anti-lock brakes. The Jeep doesn't have airbags. The Jeep is no speedster but it can maintain 65 MPH on any eastern interstate incline. Now we use the Jeep as a second car or tow vehicle. When it got 125,000 miles it was relegated it to second car status.

Towing this rig with the 2003 Toyota 4 Runner is really nice... So much so that at night I find myself forgeting that the boat is back there until I have to pass the slow pokes on the steep sections of I-81. It also gets reasonable gas mileage... as much as 16 MPG if I keep below 65 MPH.
