Re: What is the Best Brand of PWC? What Should I Avoid?

I've had Jet Ski's since 1984, with a hopped up Kawasaki 550 stand up machine, 1990 Sea Doo , 1999 Sea Doo XP hot rod and a 2010 Waverunner VX Cruiser. My 1990 Sea Doo still runs great--due to our not running it full throttle all the time.

Yamaha absolutely took the market by storm when they came out with the 4 stoke VX series that provided great performance, great features and a smooth ride at a very low price. I think the largest two selling PWC's in the retail market are the VX Cruiser and the VX Deluxe. These are 54 mph machines capable of 10 mpg and almost a 150 mile range. Most PWC riding is in the 20-30 mph range.

Yamaha is also #1 in dependability, acceleration and fuel usage. Their new FX Cruiser HO appears to be essentially the VX with a non-supercharged version of the 1800 cc engine--and, it's a rocket for a fair price.

You can go to the top end 200+ hp supercharged skis, but you can get into the $14K price range pretty fast. These machines are like Suzuki Haybusta's--more of when you're going to get hurt than if you're going to get hurt. A 68 mph PWC in the hands of a 16 year old kid is just putting too much responsibility in the hands of someone not up to making proper decisions.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a Sea Doo, but they're expensive and dealers are few and far between. Honda's apparently ride rough, and they're often sold at bargain basement prices when dealers cannot dump them on the retail market. Kawasaki's appear okay, but the dealer base is also not good. Yamaha dealers are about everywhere. I try to buy close by for parts and service, but I drove 1 hour to save $750. My local dealer has Yamaha, Sea Doo Honda and Kawasaki PWC's, but he sells much more Yamaha's.

If you'll wait a couple of months, you might could get a better deal, as dealers don't want to sit on old inventories all winter. Prices at boat shows in January are also low due to intense dealer competition. These machines have a 12 month warranty.

Good luck in your hunt.

Wow, Thanks!
That was very detailed.
Around my area we have Yamaha, SeaDoo, and Kawasaki dealers. I've at least crossed Honda off the list.

All of the rental businesses that I have ever seen all use Yamahas...there has to be a reason!

I personally still have my 2004 Polaris MX150 (four stroke German engine by Weber), and have done some tweaking on her over the years. Polaris still uses this engine in their snow line, so engine parts are still available.

Re: What is the Best Brand of PWC? What Should I Avoid?

Agree with the 3-seater, NA 4-stroke. I know that's all I would ever be happy with. Never another 2-stroke ski for me..LOL.

Some areas have a higher concentration of one mfg over the other. In my case its 3:1 SD:Yami. If the one you're leaning toward has only 1 dealer 100 miles away, that's the one NOT to buy.

If you find a used one with a new or rebuilt motor. chances are it had water intrusion. Even the older SeaDoos that were not so reliable would stand up to a lot of punishment. But sink them a couple of times and the motor will end up toast. The more agressive drivers are more prone to tipping them over.

Rentals ARE more often Yamis in the States, but in the Caribbean and Hawaii (and even Key West), they are mostly SD 4-tecs. (at least the places I have been. I rented a 2002 SD 4-tec in Aruba in 2002 - the first year of production. The seats were all tore up, the swim step was broken off and there wasn't an inch square that didn't have a scratch. It was less than a year old and the hour meter showed 1200, but it ran like a champ. That was enough to convince me. I bought mine in 2003, and my sons bought theirs in 2004 and 2005. We still have them all.

In contrast, a friend bought a 2006 (or 2007) FX-HO and that has been a fine machine as well. He does get better gas mileage and winterizing is a charm. But the "feel" is different. Like comparing my Bonneville to my son's TransAm.

Re: What is the Best Brand of PWC? What Should I Avoid?

Hello,

I am looking to get a 2007 SeaDoo GTI SE 155 with low hours. The SeaDoo was used in salt water. Is this a bad thing even though the ski has a closed looped cooling system (liquid cooled)?

Thanks in advance.

Even the closed loop SeaDoos have to be flushed. Take a good look for signs of corrosion. Salt water is no problem if the ski was properly maintained.

Yamaha are the best.
I got a 99 700L and it runs in salt water...still fires up everytime.

I am partial to Yamaha and Seadoo and have owned both. I currently have a Yam 1200 SUV. It's the big 4 seater. It's a 2 stroke, but I wanted a four seater. Bought it three years ago and was excellently maintained.

Re: What is the Best Brand of PWC? What Should I Avoid?

After the hurricane last year I had some serious damage that will cost a fortune...so I never ended up getting one.

I am blown away by the response to the thread! Thanks to everyone.

I might be going to a marine tech school in the fall and will probably be selling my boats to pay for it.
If I do get a jet ski it will probably be a SeaDoo or a Yamaha but I'll see when I get htere.

Keep it going everyone!!!

Well, after searching for a long time I finally broke down and bought a new 2012 SeaDoo GTI SE 130 (not the 155) with a 5 year warranty. Everyone I called I could not trust or they were asking way too much for a 2006, 2007 or 2008 when I could get a new one with warranty for $2,000 more in most cases. In most cases would have taken on someone elses problems. So, I am loving the SeaDoo GTI SE 130. It is fast and the breaking system is awesome. Also, love that I can keep my hands on the handlebars the whole time for forward, reverse and breaking. I 100% recommend this route.

We should start a thread for SeaDoo lovers to post their pics.

Re: What is the Best Brand of PWC? What Should I Avoid?

Hi folks, enjoying this thread. I'm curious to get more opinions on Kawasaki as I just purchased a used 2011 Ultra 300LX. Seems like the prevailing opinion is that Kawasaki runs 3rd in the list of preferred manufacturers but not many reasons wre given as to why. I'm hoping I made the right choice as I couldn't pass up the deal and can't wait to get it and hit the water!

Thanks!

Kawasakis are fine machines. Ride it and enjoy.
The top three are Honda, then Yamaha, then Kawi, and there isn't much of a gap. Sea Doo dealers are struggling around here, because the long term reliability isn't there. The performance and styling are great, though.

Honda has not made a PWC since 2007 I think. They are not in the business anymore.

The only three brands made are Yamaha, Seado, and Kawi. Yamaha and Seado have 85 to 90% of the market with Kawi being the big lagger.

Yamaha is generally viewed as the most reliable. They are the only manufacture that makes a dedicated marine motor and they are viewed as bullet proof. Nearly all rentals use Yam because you can put thousands of hours on them and there are only a few extra bells and whistles to break on their lower-end models. Their 1.8L motor is likely the best on the market and this is the largest normally aspirated motor anyone makes (though you can get it supercharged too). The cheaper machins use 1.1L motor which is considered the most fuel effiecient on the water.

Seadoo's are generally viewed as the least reliable of the three, but I would not say their reliability is bad by any means. They are the most sophisticated and they have had some issues in the recent past with the super chargers on all their models. However, this issue would seem to be fixed. If you like their styling, its a great machine. They tendto me the most costly compared to the other two.

Kawi is the big lagger in sales. They have a much smaller dealer network and their machines lack some styling luster of the other models. They use the same motor on all three models which is great for simplicity and the motor is very reliable from their motorcycle line. It is the easiest to maintain of all brands. They have not made any giant improvements for a long time, but their formula works. They have the biggest bang for the buck and resale of their models are quite strong. Their least expensive machine is BY FAR, faster, and more fun than any of those offered by Seado or Yama and you can pick up brand new one sometimes for under $7k. It has 160 hp, where the starter models from Yam has just 110. But, it looks dated. I would caution against any supercharged model from Kawi except for the 300 models. The 250/260 models had issues....others may not agree. The 300 is the highest hp model of any machine sold and has lower price point than the other top-end machines of the other brands. Of the three models that Kawi sells, the 300's seem to sit around dealers for years sometimes (you can still find new 2011 models) while the others sell briskly.

I have spoken to multiple dealers who sell all three. The salesmen and machanics usually seem to own Yamahas.

Thanks for the excellent analysis WaterDR, I got the 300LX and it's a blast! I've only ridden solo so far but looking forward to getting my daughter on it and tearing up the lake. Thanks again.

The 300 LX is by far the best high performance family machine for the money! You can by them for thousands less than similar Seadoo or yam machines.

Personally, I am cautious about owning any SC machine. They all need high octane fuel (I think) and suck down the fuel. Also, need more maintenence. HP comes with a price. BUT I totally "get" why owners buy them.

After market, the SC units are harder to sell too.

I love my kawi. but other brands are good too. Can't go wrong with Seadoo or Yami. supercharged models are way more maintenance. but the speed is awesome lol. I had a polaris and it was junk.

Re: What is the Best Brand of PWC? What Should I Avoid?

Price too is such a strong consideration and timing is EVERYTHING with these things. For example, a "good" price on a Kawasaki Ultra LX (which is an outstanding family model and non supercharged 160 hp) is about $9500. The MSRP is around $11k. Add a trailer and its another grand. The local Kawa dealers has them now at $8,000 and $600 buck for a trailer.

I see MUCH older models with hours selling for $5500 to aboout $7500 (if you can even find one) depending on hours and the time of year (for a 2007/8 model). Think about that. A brand new machine WITH trailer and tax for $9 grand. You could drive the darn thing for 5 to 6 years and if you took care of it and kept hours reasonable and sold prior in June, it might only cost you 2k to own it in depreciation. If you put 100 hours on it which is typical for many people, thats only $20/hour which is really a bargain. Natuarally that does not take into account fuel, insurance, maint....nor does it take into account the opportunity cost of the money. For example, $9k in the stock market for 5 years might net you another $6k in returns, but thats another story :)
