Re: What is with the attitude lately?

it has been getting rougher lately...even one of our top pros got attacked by a newer member cause the nub didnt like the real truth....he was politely told to back off...then helped.

one thing......spinner had a way of being friendly and welcoming to everyone even thru plain text....

if we could some way try to emulate that possibly with the use of more smiles and non threatening fun comments.

i think i will even go back to the large type "welcome to iboats banners......this could set the tone for them to be easyer on the forums....

jb had good points.....i think we all just have to try harder in the times of overall disparagement from people in general....(ward says thinking out loud).

(btw JB....hope all gets better for you)

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

Below is the first post I ever made here..... I looked around a few times in the past and never joined because I never was around a pc very much in the past and I owned a bayliner and could always find what I was looking for without joining. I got a new to me fishing boat and was installing the trolling motor. I had a question about it and after spending a couple hours worth of research on it came up empty and needed to join to ask, so this is how the person responds...... nothing helpful.... just a snooty why ya care about attitude.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=402316

So.... in reply to the title...... other people's would be my answer..:)

I guess it is all in the perspective.

Nothing snooty there....IMO.
It actually looks like it was a question and you did not follow up.
Silvertip is one of the Gurus, and i have never seen him fail to help.

Imported Rick left out a big chunk of the story from his "complaint". That Smart a** got seriously called out by another member, in that same thread, and apologised.

I guess your opinion was based on the fact that you failed to read my response to him??? How did I not follow up? He asked why do I care. I answered...well,....read it...... to this day I have no idea what the answer to my posted question is. If anyone didn't follow up, it was the GURU.

Let me get this straight.... I post a question.... the answer to my question is another question???? and one that serves zero purpose. Hmmmmm I can't imagine why us new folks have a hard time.....

not hostile at all.....that perspective thing I guess. I was simply agreeing with the OP... and giving an example... then seemingly explaining why I believe it was what it was... I shouldn't of answered at all I guess...lol

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

I have to say I have noticed it too. From what I've seen the majority of the posts seem to come from newer members, since the beginning of the year, and it's usually taking place between them.

I'm not on daily, so when I do come aboard and scan a topic I've gotten used to the post lashings I've seen.

I agree with most of the guesses so far as to what the underlying issues are that are causing this attitude. There's so much negativity right now with politics and the economy that it's affecting everyone.

I apologize if I've offended anyone in the past, and I will do my best to posi-post.

Maybe we need a master thred titled Good News Only:D

I agree that most of the threads that have hostile or rude answers are started by new members however the hostile or rude answers are coming from older members. I have not been around here long and I have to say that most everybody has been more than helpfull however I have seen a few post from new members that received some really rude answers. Sometimes people need to understand that not everybody that is on the forum knows everything about boats and boating. A question or comment that somebody makes may seem stupid to somebody that knows the answer however it may not seem stupid to the person asking. I have been on many forums where the same old questions are asked again and again (how to wax my boat?) however most of the time somebody will just answer the question again or point the person aski ng in the right direction.

I think your on to something here.... The older members get cranky from answering the same questions all the time. But on the other hand, if a new member posts on an old topic, the moderators are quick to shut it down and tell you to start a new thread.... its kind of a vicious cycle, but thats the way it is.

All in all, this is a great site. And thick skin helps on this and all forums.

I simply gave you my opinion based on reading the thread that you presented....I thought it was answered by the 3rd or 4th poster...
If it wasn't, you should have asked again.

Nothing wrong with that and it beats nursing a grudge....;)

Let's all keep it civil Ladies and Gentlemen.
If you can not respond without being rude or insulting then don't respond at all.
My 2 cents on the subject.

Try www.rcuniverse.com They have different forums for everything R/C. I'm into nitro boats...

lol... even this thread is getting hostile :D

A thread about attitudes is exposing attitudes.....

Hi,
I am a new member and haven't made but a few posts , and in replies I have been talked down to and in a neg. manner what gives ? It was my impression that this would be a great forum to get a lot of good information which I have by just reading , but to participate has been not so good.I made my rank in the USN I don't need to here, I seems that some people make posts just to make posts , however I have enjoyed the informative information that I have read here, much very good & helpful, I just not as apt to partcipate, by asking any questions in future, thanks for letting me get off a little steam--Sandy

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

No worries Sandy!

Sorry you feel you got torn down, that is not usually how it goes around here, but when someone calls it what it is, they might call us on it.;) I was kinda ruffled for a bit , I was in the same boat , pardon the pun.;):D 'cause I was not able to explain my thoughts through my barely capable typing ...then,,,,,

I got in a wet toe contest or two here , or three, oh well, a while back, and i AM still here, all for the better.:)

Good folks here, no matter what!

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

interpersonal communication is an art. I deal with this all the time in my office, but there I can speak face to face to get the train back on the tracks. When there are just words on a paper there are many different ways to interpret them.

I like the posts by the guy who is always correcting people's grammar, spelling, capitilization and punctuation. I ask myself why the heck does someone care about this stuff when the questions being asked are always boat related???

I like to welcome the new members personally with a PM. Silvertip is my bud though cause he was nice to me right from the start...he probably doesn't know who I am and all I know is he is silvertip. I don't have a lot of experience with boats yet but I share when I can.

on a side-note what's a troll?

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

I am learning a lot but the search is not very useful for a noob. When you don't know the terminology, what do you search for? As for not bringing up old threads, and not starting a new thread that has been rehashed over and over, you can't have it both ways. I've got thousands of posts on forums unrelated to boating spanning about 11 or 12 years. I am not new to forums, searching, google, etc. I'm just new to owning a boat. My parents always had the boats, and I just enjoyed theirs. The solution is simply tolerance. There is a time to post with some passion and that's when someone is giving out bogus information and we (not me so much) are correcting them. Of course there is no need to be rude about it. I must say this is one of the best self regulated forums I've seen anywhere. Overall, I agree with the thick skin comments. "Lighten up Frances" I'll take a little abuse with my knowledge if that's what it takes. Ultimately I'm still learning. I have an active thread that has several posts, but most of them are by me. I figured I'd just keep the progress going. If the answers to my problems are not currently available, at least the weeks/ months it's taking me to find them on my own will pay off for someone else that finds that thread. I spent a few weeks reading before I posted, and had already learned a bunch.
