What Type of Engine Do I Really Have?

Yeah, I know. But I need some parts and I need to know the specifics. It's an 88 Bayliner Capri (18-19' or so) with an OMC outdive and I would assume a GM engine. Model number on the plate in the compartment says "985288". Would this be a 3.0 - 4 cyl (which is what I think...) but, before I order $200 worth of parts, I want to be sure.

Thanks for not laughing at me. Been doing enough of that myself...

I know some OMC's of that era used the 2.3 l Ford engine, don't think they used the 3.0, but I could be wrong. Without any pictures, that is my guess, 2.3 l Ford. Hopefully somebody will be able to confirm this.

Have a great day,

Rob.

They actually used both the Ford 2.3 and the GM 3.0 in that year...the way you can tell em apart is that the Ford was an overhead cam motor with a cam drive belt housing on the front of the engine and I think there was also a Ford emblem on the valve cover...the GM engine was not an overhead cam engine so they do look different...The Ford will be familiar to anyone who owned a 4 cyl Mustang or Ranger pick up it was also used in them and other small Fords over the years...

Re: What Type of Engine Do I Really Have?

OK. I am REALLY getting frustrated with this. I have tried three places that sell parts, never could get through to the folks who answer OMC's phone these days, and the good folks at Bayliner aren't even sure.

Here's what I have learned:

The boat is an 88 Capri Cuddy 1952 CK I/O (OR a 1950 - the folks at Bayliner are not really sure...even with the Hull ID #).

It's an OMC engine. Has a great big OMC on the side of it.

There was a model number on a plate on the outdrive that had Model # 985288 listed on it. However, when you try to search for that number ANYWHERE it comes up blank. I did, however, run across one forum post here that had that "cross-listed" with a 985966. When I look for THAT part, I get all kinds of things.

So - I thought I was ready to order parts so I called iboats for help. The first question THEY asked was about horsepower. HORSEPOWER??? The gal at Bayliner said something about maybe 125, but wasn't sure. Well, 125 is not an option, according to iboats. There are 120's and 140's.

Can somebody PLEASE help me. This whole thing, by the way, is because I am trying to find a starter... I have a picture of that part of the motor if it helps at all. Please know that to get to the boat is 45 minutes each way - and I'm working on 3 days in a row now...

Here is a pic of the Chevy 3.0, if yours looks like this then that's what it is
http://www.michiganmotorz.com/base-marine-engine-19672010-replacement-p-67.html

...the Ford 2.3 has a stamped steel OHC cam cover on the front of the engine so it looks different, plus it's a cross flow design with the intake manifold on the right side as you face the front and the exhaust manifold on the left; the GM 3.0 has both the intake and exhaust on the right hand side as you face the front of it...

BINGO! Lou, I think that's the one! I just can't seem to figure out why the model number on my engine doesn't seem to exist. I guess everybody who buys a used boat becomes a driveway mechanic... That site is really cool too - I looked for my starter while I was there and it did the best job of any I have seen at helping me ID the correct one.

So - am I safe to say - for all those future parts orders - that this is a 3.0L OMC/GM 120hp...right??

Hey Matt...send some catfish up this way, will you?? I actually don't mind the week I'm going to be beached waiting for parts and all because the fishing up here SUCKS right now. :)

Yep you should be able to get parts by asking for an OMC (GM) 3.0, the hp does not really matter in this case...some engines it would because it could be a 2bbl carb vs a 4 bbl but not in this case...
And keep in mind you have an OMC and they have been out of business for a long time...your BEST place (not cheapest) is an Evinrude dealer that was around when OMC was in business...that's were you can get OMC specific parts that are OE when you need em...but iboats here has a lot, and so does dougrussell.com
The starter, just make sure it's a good marine specific one...I got an MES new marine starter for my 88 OMC and it's worked well for 3 years...some parts I try to get OE (bellows, impellers) but aftermarket is fine for other stuff (filters, no longer available OMC parts)

Pretty sure the 3.0L GM is either going to be a 140HP or 135HP. I know in my Stringer (1980 OMC Stringer - very different drive, similar engine block AFAIK) it's 140HP, but I have no idea about the Cobras.
