Buddy of mine came over today to help me correct some electrical/electronics issues on my boat.He works with me,we hang out with our wives, friends, etc. He corrected several problems caused by the electronics tech from the boat dealership where i purchased my boat.I treated him to beers and pizza while we worked on the boat i invited him to attend the upcoming boat show/this weekend/ my treat.I feel awkward paying him for what he did and no $$$ was not disscussed. I told him I had a problem and he offerd to come over and help me.Would you have paid him?

I would have paid him seeing as I don't know him at all...if you guys hang out with each other's wives some electrical help hardly seems worth major consideration...

do him a favor and offer to watch his kids, so they can have a night on the town, or a weekend getaway. they may want to spend the night on the mainland.

I was told once that to HAVE a friend, and to BE a friend, and to KEEP a friend......

you never charge and never keep score.

So, if he keeps doing you favors, make sure you are there when he needs them.

If he had asked before I would have.

If he had asked after, I still would have, but would have stopped hanging out with him after that.

Re: what would you have done?

If he is that kind of friend, be thankfull. There aren't many like that out there.

Money will probably offend him, but a thoughtfull gift as described above offered in appreciation of your friendship would probably not be refused.

Or, get together with his wife and offer her to take both of them out to dinner on his birthday--that is, if it is close enough to be meaningful. That way the four of you can enjoy an evening together without it seeming crass or commercial.

A saturday picnic with the boat and the four of you is also acceptable--of course don't accept any gas money if offered--explain that he is a friend and you appreciate the help he has given you in the past.

Beer, pizza, and a boat show are the way to go. If you are buddies and hang out, paying him will only offend.

Unless your his boss. Then it gets iffy.

Beer, pizza, and a boat show? Hell, I'll change an engine in a truck for that!

Don't mention paying. If he is a friend, or enjoys the work, payment will only offend. You have a good friend on your hands. Keep it that way.

I believe most people enjoy just helping out and would be offended if you insisted on offering any compensation. A few beers and friendship are more than enough. Usually somewhere down the road you will be able to recepricate and you should be ready to oblidge. I never expect anything back for my assistance no matter how worthless it my be. Sometimes they even ask me back! FRED

Friends help friends. If he bought parts for you, then *maybe* you can reimburse him. Otherwise, beer, pizza, boat show, take him fishing, some other excursion/picnic so he can appreciate the result of his help. Help him on some of his projects, he'll help you on others of yours.. Don't keep score. Do things together because yoiu enjoy each other's company.

Cash-based friendship is business, not friendship.

Re: what would you have done?

I help friends with their boats all the time, even some not as close as you seem to be with this guy. $ doesn't even cross my mind unless there are parts involved. You're fine and doing more than I would expect.

I do have one "friend" that seems to expect my help and also seems to almost insist on my help by the way he asks me . . . subtle difference, but it bugs . . . My oldest even gets roped into riding with him whenever they tag along on boat trips, and he's had it. Same thing, the guy bosses him around etc. Definitely makes things awkward at the ramp or dock when my son wants to ride with us and the guy kinda looks at him with a "well, get over here" kinda look . . .

Exactly :)

If I help a buddy out or vice-versa, it's a freebie... parts are not included! You shouldn't keep score with friends (unless it's way lopsided maybe, then give 'em a 'kick in the pants'). There is an exception though for me. One of my buddies is a Merc mechanic by trade and wrenches for a living. If I ask him to come and do something for me, I expect a bill. I don't work for free, neither should he.
He's 'good' about it anyways.
Cheers

Re: what would you have done?

I agree with most posts here.

Friends help each other out, and usually each has areas of expertise that the other needs. He may help you with the boat, but he may need you to help him put a garage door opener up one day (as an example).

Plus, either way, you both get to get away from the wives, drink some beers and hang out. I love my wife, but if there is a group of ladies over, Id be more than happy to go out and work on something...anything, so as not to have to discuss this week's queer eye for the straight guy.

I really enjoy helping people out. I do not want nor will I accept any payment for it unless it is agreed on ahead of time.
