My 18' SS with a 115 inline Mercury manages 31 mph at 5800 with a 15P prop on the gps. I am going to a 19p which should get me closer to 40mph.

You realize that the older Starcraft boats have wear you can never see. I think to just see how fast they wii go and run them at that speed is very foolish. I love my 22 holiday but would never abuse it at high speed it will eventually give you problems Ever been in a boat with a busted seam. I have on the Snake River . It aint pretty.

Yes that speed is scary sometimes even in my 22 ft holiday. 50 is way to fast. Ill only run bout 25 -30 traveling to and from fishing grounds but that speed can also be a life saver.

Re: What's your boat speed?

Finally I can post the speed of my Jet Star shown in my signature - I was able to borrow a gps last weekend.

Johnson 50, just me with a nearly full tank of gas, usual equipment, 12x17 prop in a light chop = 36 mph. I'm satisfied.

That pretty damn impressive! However,I don't think I'd want to go much faster then 36 mph in a Jet.

I don't think I would either, but I was pretty impressed with its handling and stability even in some pretty rough water on another trip out. Not that I was WOT in 2'+ waves though, I'm not crazy :). Well, not too crazy anyway.

LL,
That's great news! I've been curious as to how this old tub of mine would handle in some chop. To here it can hold its own is promising! I figure just a few more weeks and I should have mine on the water as well. You did a great job on that little Jet, she a beauty!

Thanks for the kind words, I think you'll love yours when you get it on the water. I have 2 Starcrafts and both are very stable.

Re: What's your boat speed?

Approx. 20 mph +/- running a '66 20 hp Johnson on a '59(?) Arkansas Traveler aluminum runabout converted to a fishing/flats skiff style set up. I think I can squeeze a bit more out of her on the top end with a jackplate on the motor (it's already clamped as high as I can get it on the transom), but she otherwise performs well. Gets on plane in under 10 seconds with no porpoising, or spray into the boat and I can run all day on a 6 gallon tank and usually still have fuel leftover at the end of the day.

That's a big plus too, kfa. I was also a little surprised how good the 50 is on gas, as long as I'm not WOT all the time. It's a lot better than I had expected.

Re: What's your boat speed?

Me too. I think it really helps to get them mounted and dialed in just right. Because these vintage OMCs had the sort of odd 18" leg length, a lot of folks have too much leg in the water when they slap the motor on their 15" transom, at least that was my case. I go out alone a lot, so when I had the motor clamped as low as it could go, a 6 gal. gas tank, myself all in the rear the stern would plow through the water terribly and my fuel consumption was awful. Like driving with a flat tire. However, once I clamped the motor as high as I could on the transom, added a tiller extender and moved the fuel tank forward gas tank, my performance improved tremendously at all speeds. I actually do lots of low speed/idling off plane because of all the manataee areas, etc...but even at low speeds and rpms I still get pretty good efficiency. I'd still like to raise the motor another 1"-2" to get a bit more speed on the top end and to help me slip into the extra skinny areas, just gotta decide on the best/simplest way to do it. Overall though, I'm pretty happy as is.

Kfa,
Thats a pretty cool setup you have there! How is the stability while on the casting deck? I had a 14' Alumacraft a long time ago and i always wanted to add a deck up front but never got around to it.

Re: What's your boat speed?

Here is a video of my 18' SS just after I mounted the new to me 115 Johnson. At the time I was running a 13x19 OMC SS prop, and still had to work out a few bugs. But with my brother, Dad, myself, and fishing gear we managed 41 mph at 3/4 throttle. I installed the TnT switch to the throttle lever with zip ties, and it wouldn't let me advance the lever any further..... But since then I've re located the switch and installed a 13 1/4x20 turbo double cupped prop. With just me and 12 gal of fuel she goes just over 51 on the gps.

BTW, my brother almost won a Oscar for the narration of this video ;)
