to be honest, i had never heard of winterizing, until i joined the forum. year round boating, you just choose your days. some of our best fishing are the coldest days.

It was a crappy summer in Ontario-way too much rain, t storms threat chased us off water a few times.

My boats in garage, hope to get out 1-2 more times before winterizing it.

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

I'm in Ontario, and like a few others, I'm putting it in the water in May (as soon as the docks are in the water, I'm mooring to it) and I pull it out the weekend after Thankgiving (in Canada, that's the 2nd Monday of Oct)

Still lots of fishing, just need some gloves, jackets, toques, and lots of hot coffee.

Your not kidding!! Lots of rain but still not as much as we had last year at our trailer in Marmora, we had the first 3 weeks of July off last year and it pracitcally rained everyday! The last 2 weeks of August we were off again and it was pretty much the same thing all over again, the days it didn't rain it was so windy and cold you couldn't do much anyways!
I talked to some buddies last year who were home and they said it was dry, hot and sunny but this year it seemed Southern Ont got it worse than slightly north.

STI, you are just south of me, how's your season going? Do you deal with Upper Canada Marine in Havelock? That is where I bought my rig and have been storing it the last couple of years, I was going to winterize and store it at home this year but decide to give it 1 more yr as it is due for an impeller and some plugs so they say? Plus this is the last year for warranty so that won't hurt either? ........Irv964

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

Seems to me that boat size etc. would make a big difference. At our cottage, we have to wade out to the boat, so if the water's too cold to wade or swim in, it's too cold to have the boat in. :( Now if I had a bigger boat, where I'd be more protected from the elements, I could extend the boating season... but then I couldn't get it in our lake, either.

So we usually follow the 'summer season' of Memorial Day to Labor Day, although we sometimes trailer the boat down to the house to use it a few more times in September. By late September, though, it's winterized and stored for the year.

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

I am in Charlotte, NC. If you leave your boat here in the lake you wont need much winterize. I would only winterize my boat if I were not using it. That sometimes will happen when the hunting was very active and the trout fishing was really good.
Back on the day I had time I will fish year round in the lake. Bass fishing was really slowwwww but you could catch quite a few.

Well, its not that bad to pull out the boat because the 'winterizing" thing, you can take that time to fix up some thing in the boat with plenty of time. Anyway I have to pull oput the boat always since I have to trailer it but you guys have the lake @ your backyard and that is one of the points I like of the "CONTINENTAL USA"

Where do you live? We have plenty of lakes thru the island. Guajataca and Dos Bocas were my favorites. I boat at Mountain Island lake here in Charlotte, NC. There are other lakes I like to visit but this is the closest one and it is not frequent by too many crazies!

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

I've waited until Thanksgiving a few times with the big boat, including last year. I pull the 14-foot tinny out about the same time, but I've rolled that off the shore and gone for a ride as late as New Year's Day in '00.

For the most part I don't have a set day to pull it - as long as it is relatively warm. I waited too long one cold Fall and ended up freezing the Teleflex steering. I had to undo it from the motor to get the boat to the ramp - one person operating the throttle while I steered the motor from the motor well. Once at the ramp, we had to send the trailer down without the truck. Had the tongue hooked to a chain hooked to the hitch, as the ramp was iced over pretty good. I won't make that mistake again...

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

Florida has 12 months of boating.
I'm on the Chesapeake and can squeeze 8 months out of the season.
I have been out in every weather condition, cold is not fun, but I've done it.

Only 8 months?

I take it you where not one of the boats fishing with us down at the 72 buoy in that snow storm last December. It was 17 degrees when we left the dock :D:D

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

Hey there Nelson, just to let you know this Fla. cracker and his lovely Canadian bride are looking forward tothat second Monday in October to give us a head start on the holidays. :p Since we have been married for the past five years I have gotten a taste of the Canadian Thanksgiving, and as a man who loves his turkey, I don't turn down an early holiday!

Back to the original post, she is a good boaters wife, and really enjoys the all year boating we get to do here on the Left coast of Florida.

As "the Chief" mentions, we get some really good fishing as well. Lots of the bigger fish comein a little closer to keep us from heading out too far as well.

Most of her friends and relatives enjoy their winter retreats with us down here as well. All great people and very gracious as well. :)

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

Here in northern Indiana This is the nice season to boat i.e. no jet skiers and whole lot less stupid people.
I admit I pull my boat out after every use, can see the lake from my house but no shoreline access.
I do tend to start thinking of better things to do when the daytime highs stop reaching 50, although it does recieve ocasional use until the lake freezes over.
I did notice howevever when i went past the local boat store earlier today they had a lot of boats waiting to be shrink wrapped for the winter.

When do you pull your boat out?
\

After I get done using it each day.

Oh wait, you meant when do you stop using for the winter.

Uhhh, never. Fish still gotta eat all winter, and the water don't freeze down here. It does not get used every weekend, like the summer, but still gets wet fairly regularly.

When the ice in the boat harbor is to thick to break. Then we go untill the river starts to freeze. We run from some time in may to mid october. We are hard core up here. We go out in our winter gear and open boats.

end of oct. seems to be the end for me. least according to my log i've kept for several years now..... usually have to do several block and manifold drains prior to the end though. the freezing temps will start to happen soon. like today was close... this morning forecast was for 36 tonight. has been revised to 40. but didn't catch on till i was done draining. oh well. it don't take to long for peace of mind.....

im hoping to keep taking mine out till the end of this month at least. I am enjoying the empty boat launches since after labor day. I went last night after work and I was the only guy at the launch.

My boat gets wet from April to about the first or 2nd week in October. 2 years ago, I had my ice house an my boat on the same body of water, 7 days apart.

Re: When do you pull your boat out?

I pulled the "MO Belle" out in late August. The water level was so low on Lake of the Ozarks that I risked not being able to get it off the lift if I waited. I could still launch from the ramp across the street if I need to. Currently it's being detailed to get the nasty scum line cleaned up after sitting in the water for a few weeks. They are also repairing a gunshot wound in the hull! That story in another thread....

The "Texas Belle" gets used about all year long. God Bless Texas!:)
