What is it with this place? Why all the politics?

I'm getting a distinct fealing of desa-vu, didn't Walt spit the dummy because he got frustrated with the quality of advise given (or lack of).

Re: Where's Don S?

Many here have shown support for DonS, and many seem to just want to trash others. I for one hope DonS comes back, but not at the expense of Trog or anyone else on this forum. This entire post should be removed! It serves no interest other than damaging a very helpful site.

All I can say is that if you dont like someones advice, seek another opinion. You see, I agree with the theory of filtering out the garbage replys, and determining the answer that best suits my problems. For anyone who has been around this forum for awhile, you get to know who gives good advice. That being said Don S. you will be missed on this forum.

Re: Where's Don S?

I can understand Don's frustration... I offer my professional experience on other forums that are non-boat related, and occasionally get worked up when I see someone who obviously doesnt know what they're talking about... Or people looking for advice who I personally dont think are capable of handling the task... But what I think doesnt matter... I made the decision to post on the forums to help whoever asks... There's no point telling everyone to quit trying, and hire a pro, but that seems to be what DonS did most often... Obviously if someone is posting a question here, they're not ready to hire the job out yet, so just give the proper advice, and sleep well knowing you did the best you could...

DonS needs to lighten up a bit... I get the impression he wants to be the hero of Iboats, and when his advice was challenged, he took his toys and left the sandbox....

Trog- you're a wack job, but thats cool... just try not to drive away Bondo now... :p

Trog, no offence here (lord knows I don't have many friends here) but I agree, I have gotten lots of good info from DonS and none from you. Maybe I don't ask in your area of expertise, Idon't know. Yet it looks like you always post after DonS and question what he says with your own BS and a HEHE. Frankly I', sick of it also. I think alot of others than just DonS have left Iboats due to folks like you.

kinda wierd sitting here watching yourself on trial... he he he

so far the insults have been from a very predictable few names.. i could have listed most of em before they even spoke up..

to be honest i am more interesting in the oppinions of advice seekers as opposed to those who mostly give it out and cant stand being questioned..

this thread needs to run just to clear the air.. and let those who have oppinions on it say em..

trog100

Re: Where's Don S?

I guess it will just be me an trog in the sensitivity class now ?
I always enjoyed DonS posts and I enjoy Trog100's posts. its always nice to have other opinions, some of the suggestions I have done myself in years past but now Liability wont allow it. one of the marinas I contract for, the owner today was bypassing the trim up limit switch so now the drive will trim from full down to full up with just the trim switch. if anything happens and there is anyway a lawyer can insinuate, he aint gotta prove it, that the bypassed switched caused an accident or failure he is hung out to dry. my general liability insurance includes a clause about neglegience on my part. if I had the workorder it would have to be fixed as per the service manual or I would turn it away. so would I ever suggest bypassing the limit switch? nope. would trog, maybe so. would it mean one of us was wrong? nope. will work fine as long as the operator pays attention. therin lies the problem. kinda like the lady who sued macdonalds cause the hot coffee burned her so macdonalds paid up and now has a warning printed on the cups.

Re: Where's Don S?

Yes, but, can anyone tell me what brand oil I should use in my OMC Stringer? :D :D :D

Guys, I appreciate and respect all of your advice. I don't have a lot of posts, but I have learned a lifetime's worth of knowledge just from reading others. It's not as important to me who is correct, but more important that I get to spend more time on the water and less in the driveway.

Don S. is a tremendous wealth of information as well as Bondo (even though he don't do OMC ;) ). That's just naming 2 of the many knowledgeable members I hope to get responses from when I have a problem.

Trog, no doubt you have a unique way of looking at things sometimes, but sometimes it's the unique way is the only way to solve a problem. I'm always glad to get your input as well.

The less knowledgeable, such as myself, need the advice offered on this board... regardless of what perspective it might come from.

I'll step down from my soap box now...

-KH-

I think people lose site of the fact that this is nothing more than an internet chat room, not a closed-door professionals only technical hotline.

It's the job of YOU who read each post to filter out the junk, guesses, dummies, professional answers, sarcasm, and 13 year olds posing as boat mechanics.

Fact is, ANYONE can write ALMOST anything they want here. Right or wrong. Many seem to forget that. I see this as a site to bounce things around, a place to confirm or deny your own thoughts, and a place to help get yourself and/or others to the correct answer to a problem. The people in this place do not ALWAYS provide the correct answer. If you dislike a certain person on this site, just skip their comments...it really is that easy. If, for example, I didn't like Trog's comments (not true, I have no prob at all there), I'd just skip anything Trog had to say and move on. How hard is that?

I would like to agree with the crazy 1. Now I know I am new but I did notice the conflict and in rereading some of the posts we all must agree that some people are just overly sensitive. This board is composed of people of all ages, races, creeds and national origins. There is bound to be a difference of opinion, and all people on this site wont like each other. Just as in real life you got people you dont like. Just deal with it, I mean if you let someone push your buttons that far, you need to give yourself a reality check. This is just a discussion board. This is not life and if someone is that involved that they take this stuff personal maybe they do need to take a break to reassess their priorities. I personally have gleaned many tidbits of wisdom from both Don and Trog. I discard the chaff and keep the wheat. Like myself I am not a boat mechanic but I was a professional auto mechanic, So I offer advice based on that. I dont go tothe outboard pages, cause I know diddly about outboards. Anyway We all need to let people be themselves and stay out of their conflicts beacuase we will just make things worse. We all need to remember that you should be polite to people, and dont antagonize them and dont make personal attacks, becausae the reality is we dont really know these people. So lets just all treat each other with dignity and respect and we would all get along just fine.
P.S, I am a professional mental health counseler. So if ya need any advice let me know. :D
Later,

I may as well join the fray. :D

I don't know Don, I don't know Trog, and I don't know Rodbolt.

I personally enjoy Trog's responses - Trog - you hang in there!

Don and Rodbolt seem to be equal with their professional abilities. -Rodbolt, I truly appreciate your level headed dealing with all posters - me included - and your liberal use of the smily ;) to keep responses light hearted - even when "admonishing" some misinformation. It helps tremendously.

I enjoy this forum and it has been a great help to me over the years. Thanks to all involved!

Re: Where's Don S?

I've observed and participated in this particular forum for some time and I've always felt there was sort an "expert competition" going on -- like my response is more accurate than yours (lets just call it being "nit-picky")! I thoroughly enjoy Trogs commentary and highly respect Don's obvious experience and there are many others that have valuable thoughts and information to share. Unfortunately, when interpreting the written word, it is not always possible to determine if the writer was intending to be critical, or whether perceived criticism is simply a matter of writing style. Intent is the key here. In a way, some folks simply don't like the answers they get so they get testy. On the other hand, some posters ask questions that to a guy like Don, makes one wonder if they know which end of a screwdriver to hold. Don is a straight shooter and tells it like it is. The long and short of this is that everyone needs to remember this a forum consisting of peoples opinions. Some of those opinions are right, some are wrong, some are really out there -- but that's what makes the world go around. It would be one very boring world if everyone thought alike, and chances are we'd still be rowing our boats if that were the case. Anyway, life is too short to go through it upset. Cheers & Peace!

Great response! People are just looking for a little help and advice. Keeping it fun is what makes me come back. No one comes here to be talked down to. :D

Re: Where's Don S?

I am new to iboats, from what I have seen there is a need for everyone’s input at one time or another. From what I read Don is a straight up "here's the way to fix it correctly" type as are rodbolt, bondo, and a few others. The next level is the here's how I would have/should have, done it, both have their merits.

Some of the post make think, man that guy doesn’t need advice he needs to hire a mechanic.

The way I see it the people using this site are looking for experience and advice. Both by the pros and those graduates’ of the school of hard knocks. Opinions and options that’s what we’re looking for. If all you want is information on your IO, OB, electrical system whatever, as Don put soooo many times buy a manual.

If Don S chooses not to return it will be iboats loss. But he is the one who decided to leave. With the exception of the iboats powers to be, no one can force him to leave. No other poster has that power. I myself hope he returns.

This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. ONE very TINY dribble of GAS WILL BLOW YOUR BOAT AND KILL EVERYONE ON IT. Don was right, but some people still don't LISTEN. Okay on a car, but an enclosed (gas vapor heavier than air, so you don't SMELL IT) boat..I give up

Jeeeezzzz, people come here for ANSWERS, not "style". Don treated this like it is a FORUM. Others treats it like a chatroom, and you have to wade through mindless blather and come out more confused than before ......big diff....

If you dont want to give advice to do-it-yourselfer types, go to a website designed for just professionals... They do exist. I belong to a couple (non-boat) professionals forums.
