I have a Mercruiser 7.4 MPI serial# 0L833993 and a Bravo III leg serial# OL838085. I want to be able to do my own preventive maintenence, repairs, and just understand the mechanics better.

Direction here would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Which manual?

Actually, you want #16 or #23 for the engine, I can't tell which one for sure, neither serial number you posted is a valid engine serial number.

Re: Which manual?

You don't have the engine serial number listed, only the drive and transom shield.
Look for a brass tag just above and aft of the starter.

Just noticed you are from KTN and I think I know that boat since there is only 1 2556 in Ketchikan with a Merc 7.4 MPI, but for the life of me I can't put a name to it, and there is a raised area in the engine hatch to the engine would fit.
PS, I used to work at Lighthouse until just over a year ago.

Re: Which manual?

I guess I'd better take a look for the proper number tommorrow. I wasn't near the boat at the time of the post so I took it from the marine survey paperwork. Thanks for all of the feedback, sorry I gave inacurate info.

Don,
I think the boat you are refering to is owned by a charter fisherman, can't remember his name right off. He still runs it every season and, yes, his hatch has been raised to occommodate the bigger engine (Howie's boat has the 5.7 MPI and his hatch was raised also), I did not want a raised hatch to ruin an otherwise expansive platform. I picked this boat up in Port Moody B.C. and the hatch is not modified. I looked long and hard for this boat and my patience paid off - very clean and well equipped.

Re: Which manual?

Look at his signature Don... "Jacoba"

DOH!!!!

I mean REAL names, like first and last names. People in Ketchikan know people by their names, not boat names or usernames on some forum.

Re: Which manual?

O.K., so now I'm at a dead end and need a little help here. I looked at the little metal tag showing the serial number, Don S. showed me where to look, and although I was upside down and had to smoosh a hose out of the way to see it, I'm sure I got it right: L633993
This is a big block (7.4 liter) and believe me, it just fits in the available space. I'm a little worried about the difficulty in working in such tight quarters.

Any help on which OEM manual?

I'm the one that put Howie's engine in, and I don't remember if we had to raise the hatch or not, but it was a Volvo, not a Mercruiser and his drive is still the 280 but converted to a DP.
There isn't a problem with giving you the link for the manual, all available are at the link below.

The problem is knowing which manual is the correct one.

Yup, I had my eye on that one but he wasn't serious about selling it - nice power combination though. In the end, I am very happy with my big block (took seven "bodies", a dog, dinghy, fuel, gear etc. to cabin in Misty Fjiords and really appreciated having "power to spare" on that trip. I'm happy with the fuel cunsumption as well.

Sorry, I'm still lost. Is there something else I need to specify?

Re: Which manual?

High Cs,
You posted 2 different engine serial numbers, in the first one you posted L663993. Then your next post said L633993. Since the first one came up as a 4.3L, the second one you posted may actually be correct.

Darned. I looked at the number and thought it was the same one

The 0L633993 number actually is the right one. It's a 98 MPI. Manual #23 is the one you need.
