Just venting my frustration after looking at many (once nice) boats that are less than 10 years old and 50-60K brand new. I just don't understand the mentality of people letting expensive toys such as these self destruct when they are so easy to prevent. I keep my jon boat under a carport and covered LOL

Sutor623- I own approx 110K in actual tools, I don't leave them out in the weather to rust and rot either. Tool or toy when you have that much of an investment why wouldn't you take care of it? am 51 years old and had to work hard to get what I have. I have owned approx 20 boats in those years and just believe in taking the best care I can of whatever I own. I am mainly talking high end bassboats here. Not hard to put a cover on these types of boats.

that's actually true of a real boat. A real boat can handle being outside for years in rain, snow and sun, no problem. Toy boats, not so much.

Buy your boat like you buy patio furniture, not living room furniture. You put a marine radio on it, right? why wouldn't everything else be marine quality?

It boils down to priorities. I'm betting that a neglected boat, wherever it lives is owned by a person that has a car or truck that gets the same treatment. My wife and I just returned from another road trip and that was a topic of conversation but involved farm equipment since we were were in dairy country. Ever notice that good farmers have neatly painted buildings, well cared for fences, farm equipment that is either lined up nicely if it sits outside, or is stored inside a pole building? While bad farmers seem to leave equipment sit wherever it was last used, a mower sits where it ran out of gas, the tractor has one flat tire, buildings have broken windows, need paint, and on and on. I have a cousin that owned a dairy farm that was absolutely immaculate. His daugher and son-in-law bought the place when retirement time rolled around and today the place is an eyesore. Bad luck? Nope - laziness and/or lack of priorities. Some folks just don't seem to know how to take care of things or have the desire to take care of it if they did know how. But they are generally quick to point out how unlucky they are because stuff is always broken. Others just don't care. It's a shame because big ticket items can retain much of their value if properly cared for. Those that don't are generally folks who can't afford to take the inevitable hit. Over seven decades of observation goes into this opinion.

it's the same with houses, with appliances in the yard, cars up on blocks, shutters hanging off. Nothing wrong with having stuff to wrench on, but move it around back! No matter how little money you have, a little effort and pride is free.

Had a friend who's philosophy was let the old boat rot so the wife would let him get a new one.

I'm in the "it's a boat category".
I cover them in the winter and leave them uncovered all summer.
I like the convenience of just hopping in them.
I've recovered the seats and replaced the carpet once in my Glastron in 35 years.

Even a walmart storage cover takes all of two minutes to remove. I think marc c may have just answered the op's question here.

I have to confess, I had exactly that reaction this year shopping for my first boat. I couldn't believe how many nice (and fairly expensive) boats had been so neglected that they were junk in less than 10 years. I still don't get it.

I'm reading a few comments pertaining to other things. I currently have a flat tire on my F250. It looks kind of off sitting the driveway that way, but the truth is, I have to fix the hub when I get the tire checked and with a wedding coming up, do not have the time to fix it. Judging by some comments, it sounds like I'd be labeled as neglecting my truck? I usually don't try to equate someone's care for everything, based on their care for one thing. My dirty truck sits with a flat tire, but inside my race/weekend car is covered and ready to go, the jets kid winterized and covered, and my boats are covered and either ready to go or being brought up to nice shape. If you don't get past my flat tired, dirty truck, you would assume my other stuff is junk?

Are there really that many boats out there that are far overpriced for their condition? Or are you looking at boats that are way underpriced for the size, model and year? This sounds to me like the latter. If I see an 8 yr. old boat that is half of what the cost should be, I have a fairly good idea of what I'm going to expect when I see it. There are very, very, very few boats out there that riduclously under market value and also in Bristol shape. Is there a chance that possibly the target price you have is simply too low?

I'f I 'm looking for a Corvette and have 3K to burn, I know roughly what I'm going to find.
