wire diagram

son has a 120 mercury inboard motor, amp gage when turn key on is maxed to end, battery dead in less then hr. if take all wires of battery except positive and negitive still maxed. got new alternator and the red and orange wires are on same post on alternator, power on all time alternator , could this be the short . need diagram to show how starter, alternator hooked up?

I betcha you got a seperate voltage regulator screwed to the transom.... and that's yer problem.
But you need a DMM to cheggit.

165 mercury
plus where would a person get a manual for this boat?

Man, you sure do take your time about answering questions

First of all, if it's a 165, it's not a 120.
The 165 is a 3.7L (aka 470) engine.
Up in the adults only or DIY sticky at the top of the page is Mercruiser manuals. You need #8 for the engine, #6 for the drive.

The charging system is NOTHING like a 120.
