Re: Would you buy a boat that said "new floors" in the ad?

Huh?

What people call a floor is a sole. That is the correct term.

A deck is topsides as in the front deck on a cabin cruiser not inside the boat.

Wanna, prolly, rope, moter, trailor, wench.....LOL.

Sometimes when you advertise on a media like Craigslist you simply have to use words that the average schmukk might understand. If you said it had a new sole the potential buyer might think it was a fish sandwich, or a deck might imply a cabin cruiser. "Floor" is understandable to a novice.

Irregardless, if you do say sole and the guy really understands what you're saying because he's a pundit, he'll pass anyway because he knows most rebuilds were not done correctly (present forum company excluded).

Maybe even SBL did the work!!!

I don't think I would - Just tells me that there is a high probability that the stringer and transom are rotten and they just covered it up with the "new floors"

What are your thoughts. I see this a lot on craigslist.

Depends on if it's glass or tin.

Price plays big in the game too - to help Chris punch at the "smokeonthewater" bag for minute: A free CL boat with a "replaced" floor/deck/sole/topsides can go a loooooooonnnnnnnggggg way for the right guy with the right know how. Some fella's can make 'em work for a reasonable amount of money, and other guys can do it REAL cheap.

Then there's those of us who post a lot of questions

My use of the word was to provide an additional illustration of the words I put in the first line.

I got to say I love it when people with a sense of humor are on here!

Hey but, I guess the answer is yes I would buy a boat that has been redone. I wouldn't believe someone I don't know (or some I do) as to it being done right. I've learned a lot in life by seeing how not to do things. I'd need pictures and ask lots of questions.

Hey were you looking at something specific or just throwing out the topic to talk about?

Heck 95% of boaters don't know what "sole" means, so that wouldn't be a reason to say no. But after everything I learned here, including "sole" I would inspect and check so much more than previous boat buys, including the sole, transom, and stringers, to feel comfortable with this boat. The fact that this has already been done could be a great value. Just need to be able to know a good job verses a hack job.
I'm re-doing an older boat with all of the above fixes and have it all documented so folks can see exactly what I did and how. It's not perfect but it's better than when it came off the show room floor IMO. And I am almost sure I wont get my $$ back if I ever elected to sell it. Not everyone does hack work and this can play to the buyers advantage, especially when we all know it is rare to get your $$ back when you start fixing up an older boat.
Just looking at how a person keeps their house car/truck, boat tells you a bunch when buying from them. I would proceed with caution using all of the above to help decide.

just my 2 cents from what i have learned about boats and rebuilding. if it is older than 10 years, i don't bother looking. if it has been "redone" i don't bother looking. if the floor, deck, sole, transom has been replaced, i don't bother looking. if it's been painted, i don't bother looking. if the motor doesn't match the year of the boat...in most cases, i don't bother looking. if the motor has had work done on it, i don't bother looking. if it says, was running, just had it out, wife says it must go, i don't bother looking. if it is too good to be true, i don't bother looking.

Better for me!

The boat I have right now was found on CL. Was way underpriced for what it was. Ad listed it as w/o a motor and a soft spot in the floor. The boat, 1984 Lund S14 DLX. Asking price with trailer, $395.00, bought it as-is w/o trying to talk them down.

It depend son how it was redecked, if it was done corectly I woudl certainly buy it, if they made it a weeend project and cobbled it together no.

I replaced the deck on my boat and I would buy that btu I stripped it completely and used real marine 3/4 ply on it so it depends on the job they did.

Hell, when I find a boat on craigslist, I automatically assume its going to need a new deck anyway! I don't go to craigslist to find a good boat. :)

Exaaaaaaactly! ^^^^^

I'd assume the worst unless handed or see evidence that says otherwise. (This includes all wood and engines too)

Open ended questions like, "How do you replace a floor in a boat?" go a long way to ascertain whether the owner knew what they were doing or if they just threw down MDF and hot glued the carpet down. I'd also ask questions that you already know the answer to in order to see if the owner knows. "Well, what's under the floor? Some kind of brace? I've always wondered..." "What about the back part that the engine is bolted to? What's it made of? Does that ever need attention?"
