Would you change careers?

If you were to decide to change careers tomorrow, what would you do for a living? Work in another industry? Start your own business? Both? What would it be?

For me, I think I'd go in to business for myself as a general contractor.

I'd get a room at the nearest Holiday Inn Express tonight and tomorrow I'd be an orthodontist.

I have changed business fields several times but have spent most of my working life in business management. I think the one thing that I have learned from this experience is that, while each business segment has its own issues, good management translates from one arena to another. The most important thing is to do something that interests you.

Being involved in corrections/law enforcement my entire adult life I would find something NOT in that field. I really don't know what I'd do. Me and my wife went through this discussion a short time back. I like the outdoors and laboring, but not too much laboring. After kicking around several different ideas she suggested being a surveyor. I REALLY liked that idea. So I looked into that area. Nope, way too long to get to a good position money wise. I don't make much now but it would take me at least 15 years to get back to the same money level. I can't take a hit that bad. I've done a little bit of everything in life although most of it was for just the job or day labor. I'd like to work as a plumber or electrician. Those are pretty good trades IMO. I figure I'll kepp on doing what I am now till I hit 50. I can then retire with full benefits and return to the same line of work 31 days later. I'll still have a child in school then so I'll have to. Gracie Marie will (should) be born April 5th so I got a ways to go as I'm 33 now.

If there's nothing stopping me from doing whatever I want... I would be a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle.

Of course, there's about a million things standing in my way... some of which are insurmountable.

I have been self employed my whole adult life.
First I had a Tennessee Pride sausage trailer that I sold them sausage biscuits out of.
Then jumped feet first into OTR O/O.
22 years later I "retired" from that and started a courier business.
Built that up to 9 vans and drivers until 2006.
Then I cut back to 4 vans.
Now it's myself, the wife and the 2 oldest daughters doing the driving.
So, I really don't know anything else to do.
If I could and was able medically, would love to fly a jet.
Don't matter what kind, as long as it's a jet.
er.............., yes it does matter.
I would want to fly one and blow things up.

But when I retire, it will just be me, the wife and my lil buddies hanging out.
That will be cool.

Well, I had several careers; some simultaneous. The one I liked least paid the most bux, the one I liked most didn't pay that well, but was the most fun I had with my clothes on.

Being retired from one is pretty much the same as being retired from another.

I was born about 100 years too late for the career I really wanted. I know it sounds childish but there is something about being a cowboy in the wild west that really appeals to me. I've always wanted to go wherever the sun took me, shoot my own meat and live off the land, push cattle from one place to another and drink, fight and gamble in a frontier town. I guess that's why I like the show "Deadwood" so much.
Realistically, I think I would like to own a micro-brewery and brew great beer for good people.

I've worried about this very question. I work for my brother who is a farmer. We rent land and the house I'm living in. My brother and especially land lord are getting older and could kick the bucket at any time. Then what would I do? I have some savings but, not enough for more then a few months. I see assembly line work of some kind in my future. But, I would really prefer to find a good place to work if I could. I had a job as a kid where we made cattle feed by cooking products together then using a vacuum to draw them out of the cooker and put them in a barrel. That was a good job. Wish I had kept it. But, I was young and didn't know how good I had it. I could have been running the whole place by now had I stayed and been more aggressive. I'd like to find something like that again. But, those jobs don't come along every day.

Assuming i would still need to make the same or close to the same income

I would just wish away all the anoying people as i enjoy my work

I had the good luck to travel in my first job between 1975 and 1989 and the people that drive you nuts are in every place i ever did service work

I've always thought about commercial fishing, the fresh water kind, since I like fishing and boat so much. Out on the water enjoying the outdoor and catching fish for a living. What could be better then that huh? Is there a commercial fisherman among us iboaters? How is it? is it a lot worst then what it seemed?

I started out doin what I loved. I was a Naval officer and then a Merchant Marine officer. The Navy was great to me. I enjoyed the structure and discipline. Lucrative, it was not. The Merchant Marine was very lucrative, but not very well suited for a family man. Took those skills and became a Marine mechanical engineer designing and manufacturing engine components. Decent pay and home every nite.
If I had my way and the family would go for it, I'd like to be a lighthouse keeper. Solitude and stress free is what I desire. All I would need is a TV, computer, and a helicopter ride to Giants Stadium ten times a year.

Sometimes I think I would like to work outdoors. Sometimes I think I'd like to work with my hands. But the reality for me is that I like doing those things when I'm in the mood or when the weather's nice. HAVING to do it every day is a different story.

Most people don't get to do what they enjoy every day. It took me 20 years to get here, but now I get to work mostly unsupervised playing with computers. I don't waste the company's money, but I basically have a blank check to buy what I need. Having the funds to create an environment that makes you most successful is a good position to be in. I'm thankful for it.

I was a Jet Fighter Mechanic in the U.S.A.F. Then I went to work and retired from GM after 30 years. I also went to College and Pastored Churches for 28 years Both Bi-Vocational and then finally Full Time. I also drove as a Courier for Grand Truck Railroad. If I had my choice I would be a Full Time Pastor any day. Though Pastoring was by far the poorest paid position it was by far the most rewarding. I loved serving people and seeing their lives changed as their walk with Jesus Christ grew and they matured in their Christian faith. To see the Children and Adults both grow and mature and their lives become enriched by their faith was the most rewarding career anyone could experience. I have since retired but I still occasionally fill in pulpits as the need arises.

I started out as a chef, then cafeteria manager, finally a regional director for a management company, specializing in hospitals and nursing homes.

Around age 40 I changed careers to computer programming. My only regret is I didn't make the change years earlier. I love what I do.

Now, I'm 58, and the company I work for is imploding -- Dilbert's Poiny-Haired-Boss is in charge. Within 4-8 weeks I'll be unemployed. Our governor has driven most jobs out of state, so I'll probably have to move or find yet a different line of work.
