was just wondering...has anybody ever used van captain chairs as boat seats?.....

you know those big captains chairs that we used to put in our "shaggin wagons"

obviously they would need to be recovered in vynal.....

but they swivel....recline move back and forward.....the base is a pedistal.

the only thing they dont do that i want is to raise or lower...and have a bolster......

my only concern..is the height of the seat back. this would possibly create a blind spot or two....but i think i could live with that.

(this is not a salt enviroment)

opinions?

cheers

i really like the bolsters as well......

i would purchase new......but then i would have to have them recovered to fit the theme of the boat...so a new boat seat with all the features is cost prohibitive.......

but i boats is still gonna sell me a whole boat load of stuff...:)

hmmm... a bolster would not be that hard to build.........it could also double as a foot rest when reclining !

ahhhh yesss erik......

but as you know...dragon skin is made of scales......this would cut the boundry layer of air over the dragon skin....simmelar to a fish in water...thus making it more areodynamic...and giving me increased fuel savings while also increasing the overall speed of the craft!

and real dragon skin....not the cheap stuff from wall mart...feels sooo good on the bare legs...untill you go againt the grain of the scales! :D :D :D

Takeout seats from van customizers can be had relatively cheap.
Even in junkyards cheap.
If they are cheap enough, you can at least try the out before spending big bucks on the boat seats.

thats what i was thinking... im going to have to recover any thing i get any how... new or used......we got a place here called pick and pull...10 bucks..any seat...over 1000 cars and vans...would be easy to find a set.

my only real worry is the height of the seat back.

and is there any practical reasons why we dont use them in boats?.....

again...recoverd with marine material

Lets say you use vinyl covered van seats.
The vinyl might have some uv and anti-mold additives (uv, don't know if they have anti-mold vinyl or not, don't think so).
And the boat seats maybe use closed cell foam so as not to absorb water?
And maybe boat seats use stitching thread that does not rot as fast?

when you go to an upholesters for marine seat recovering...ther will hopefully use the correct materials......however...i will be specifying the materials to use..so i wont leave this stage to chance.....as well, ill be supplying the foam....i can get memory foam really cheap....so the whole thing is going to be done with memory foam....the back seating area will fold down to be a king sized bed....

I think the biggest problem you'd face is the steel framework of an automotive seat, base and post.

I had thought about the same thing, considering how flexible those seats are ( had a nice older hightop conversion van with them....very comfortable ). Recovering would be a must, I think I'd try my best to rustproof them before they got reupholstered.

Heres what i've been thinking, why not use a computer chair it does about everything you want and it would be real easy to modify it to use as a boat seat. I'm thinking along the lines as a fishing seat.

If you're having it re-covered anyways... why not have the seat back cut down to a size you feel comfortable with? Unless of course you want to keep it the full height :)

Have you looked at lawn tractor seats? They're one piece molded usually, not too uncomfortable, weather durable, and cheap....

Computer/office chairs will work, they have swivel locks and height adjustments, even reclining adjustments. hmm Maybe the leather one I have here at the office will look good on the Marlin Trophy CC.

Do not know how the metal would hold up to corrosive environment, salt air and Corona spills on it.

Chairs "R" Us has a sale on the Dragon skin variety.

Make your own seat shape from fiberglass, I have customers that make after market high performace seats for the auto industry.

I think I saw some seat shapes at Joey's the other night that would work very well as a mold.

oops! I think you may have noticed them also.

can also consider molded poly seats mean't for racing and offroad use.
Then add whatever type of cushion/cover which is removable so it does not sit out in the weather. They even can be had with neoprene material instead of vinyl.

Re: captains chairs for boat seats ?

One thing to keep in mind is that auto/van/custom seats are usually much heavier than marine seats. So a couple of those high back swivel bucket seats will add quite a few pounds to the boat. Although I would guess that the seats from low end economy cars would be fairly light.
