Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

It wasnt as bad as it looks, just a pain, it took about 9 hours to clean up. The worst part of it was work...I cleaned the basement for 9 hours, went into work midnight shift Monday, then doubled back onto daylight...I was awake from 7:30AM Sunday morning until 10:00PM Monday night:eek:

I know its off topic but Ill throw up a pic of the new toy...

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

As for the boat...

I had a hard time getting the 1208 to lay down around the small angles of the "cross board cutouts". I ended up grinding alot of these areas down. Also, for the gas line, I made cutouts so I did not have to drill a hole in my fresh glass work to install the fuel line.

In these areas I used a layer of 1.5oz CSM and two layers of 10oz cloth. I know it isnt as strong as the 1208/CSM combo, but is better than a huge void for moisture to accumulate.

This is me with a dumb look on my face glassin in one of these cutouts:rolleyes:

That first pic really shows my multiple layouts to get the glass for that cross board right:rolleyes:

I just tell myself that ill be the only one to remember that stuff

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

MM, thanks for the tip! I did not know I could piece it in and it still be strong. I have had a full day of drying the front part of one stringer. I noticed it was wet. So I opened the glass on one side and put the heat to it. Also, My buddy used the same term "sludge" as you when his sewer backed up. Such a nice way to put it!!! Thanks again.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Its afternoon shift again....If I can drag my arse out of bed before 9:00 am everyday I can get a lot done.

This past weekend I did some grinding/sanding on any of the rough edges made from the glass work and I ground out the drain holes in the stringers.

I also added a layer of CSM and a layer of 10oz mat to the ski locker area. On this coat I wanted a finished smooth surface. I added surfacing wax and white pigment to the resin. I was impressed how well this worked. I will probably do the same thing in the motor well/transom area in lue of paint.

I started working on the foam today. I decided to use sheet foam over the pour in kind. I made a hot wire knife for cutting the foam. I utilized a battery charger, some scrap wood, a few nuts and bolts, and a guitar string.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

I started by making a template of the curve around the stringer. I then cut this shape out with a jig saw. The wire cutter was used to rough out the profile, and a sure-form planer was used to smooth it up. Its not the prettiest thing in the world, but it maximizes the amount of foam I can stuff in this thing.

I think I am going to try a random orbital sander on the other side instead of the planer. Also, I wish I had a 4 or 6 amp charger, mine only has settings of 2 and 10 amps. At 2 amps and the rheostat all the way up it barely cuts the foam, at 10 amps and the rheostat all the way down it burns the wire up in about 30 seconds.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Long time no post!
Thanks Arch and TC...these forums are really good for encouragement. I hoped to have the deck in this weekend, but with work it might not happen?.Afternoon shift Sat, Sun, Mon-Friday.
The foam turned out nice, but was a pain in the ass?.definitely going with expanding foam next time (if ever..lol). I could fit a little bit more up in front of the gas tank but I don?t feel like messing with it anymore and am calling it good. I?m not going to bother with any of the ?popular? foam calculations?without taking into consideration the area under the curve they are not even close to accurate, and after finishing school I?m done with calculus.
Now for the pics?.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Ok, this weekend I finished cutting the deck template, cut and fitted the deck boards, and put a layer of CSM on the underside.

Today I hope to mark and drill the screw holes for the deck, install the fuel line and sending unit wire, and pressure test the fuel tank.

I will possible try and secure deck, but that is probably a little optimistic for the pace that I have been working.

I used poster board to make the template, it worked great
