Nice job so far. Looks great. When i started my rebuilding process I put a strap around the hull about 2/3rds of the way down just to keep the hull in shape. I found the sides layed down a bit.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Thanks for the support everyone!

Canadian,
I tried the strap concept, but not until after I took the cap off and found out how much the sides blew out. I was afraid of altering the shape by ratcheting it up after, I HOPE to the man upstairs I don?t have too hard of a time getting the cap back on.

Osborn,
I am surprised at how much help I have been able to get so far, and I know your lurking so thanks Greg!

Arch,
I spent last night and today skimming the first 30 pages of your rebuild, I am very impressed with the care and craftsmanship you have put in!

Progress wise?.
Last weekend I spent most of my time grinding everything I may have missed earlier on and getting ready to glass in the main stringers and layout the outer stringers and motor mounts.

I used a string in several places to check the height of the main stringer before cutting out the others. I was amazed how accurate I was in all but one spot. On the starboard rear corner I am about a ?? from the string, I wanted this to be about a 1/8? for the glass but I guess I will add a little more in this area.

I also cut out a template for the motor mounts. They will be laminated out of 13 pieces of 3/4 ply. My only concern with this idea is the strength of a lag bolt going the same direction as all the joints of ply. I may cut these a little short and add a ?cap piece? perpendicular to the direction of the ply. What do you all think?

Thanks for the complement, you work here is looking really nice. On your motor mounts, the bolt will be running parallel with the plywood lamination, not perpendicular? I wonder if you would be better off using something like red oak? It would have a better pull out strength than the plywood.

Red oak would defiantly be stronger, but I lack a good source of kiln dried hardwoods locally. By the time I buy enough red oak at Lowes I would have motor mounts worth gold plating, lol. Ya, the bolt would run parallel with the plywood if laminated, defiantly not the strongest. I was thinking of making the top most 1.5? lay perpendicular to the bolt. Ill mock one up tonight and see what I think.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Friday night I glued up the motor mounts and the outer stringers. I would like to have set the stringers on Saturday but a hangover got in the way?little too much encouragement. I did however get the motor mounts in.

I snapped a few pics of the way I have everything covered up. I used the wood left over from making the transom clamps and a couple old door hinges to make a support for the tarp. It keeps the water from pooling up on top and is easily removable. I also can work inside with a light.

Nice work those motor mounts aren't going anywhere! It does seem to require a lot of encouragement to get a boat rebuilt :D

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Thanks for the compliments Snow and Arch!

Between the rain drops Sunday I managed to get the outer stringers fitted and drain holes (I forgot the word everyone uses on here) put into the inner stringers. I also cut the ?cross boards? to fit and cut out and routed the stringers to accept these. I did not like this design, as it original caused several areas that could not be glasses properly and significantly contributed to the rot issues. I decided that if I glass these top boards and the stringers separate, and then bond them together I will achieve the original structural intent and completely seal all the wood surfaces. There was also a third short stringer that ran between these two at the bow end (see post #18) the will be constructed later. I will glass the major stringers first because I feel there structural integrity is more significant.

Tonight my second mate and I set the outer stringers. I snapped a sneak peak but didn?t put the CF card back in my camera:rolleyes:. The three boards between the inner stringer and the outer curved stringer are only there to hold the curve of the hull until the PB sets. If anyone was questioning my order of madness, this is why I set the inner stringers first. It also made it much easier to make an accurate template for the outers.

On another note?holy crap did this love of PB take a lot of resin! I?m going to order another 10 gallons that will hopefully finish this little monster. I have already used 6 gallons and haven?t even started glassing the stringers, deck, or interior pieces:eek:! I think I will also get a gallon or two of epoxy; I am going to use it to repair the hull and the holes in the cap and transom. I have decided not to go through with the gel coat idea?therefore I don?t have to worry about finish adhesion and get stronger filler than poly. How do you all feel about using epoxy for this over poly? Worth the expense?

I agree with Arch, getting stringers in was like reaching critical mass for me. Now it seems like it will be downhill from here, in the good way!

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

It may be soon, but I still have a lot of work ahead! I didn?t get nearly as much glassing done as I hoped...Opps has given me a false sense of reality...this takes lots of time! That man must be some kind of god. Boy do I hope I have all my heights right for the cap to fit over the floor!

Technical side, I am going to tab and cap all the stringers with 1.5 oz CSM, possibly 2 coats. This will be followed by one coat of 1208 wrapped over everything. I went with the 1208 over the 1708 because I can see a definite issue with getting that thick of a mat to wet out on narrow corners. I have not had any problems getting the CSM to lay tight so I feel confident this will work.

On a positive note, US Composites is probably the BEST company I have ever worked with, hands down. I just ordered another 10 gallons of poly and numerous other supplies and glass from them. They called me to confirm a correct order and suggestions as to other products they offered that may be better and cheaper than what I requested!

i do not know much about this boat but i do know it DOES NOT HAVE A TITLE. the boat is not stolen. long story short... did some work for a guy who traded us the boat for the work. he never gave us the title to the boat or the trailor. he said if we asked again or even tried suing him then he would report it stolen.. ( he payed us in cash so therefore there are no records......my stupidity) but the boat is either late 80's early 90's. its a nice boat just needs a good cleaning. has 350 chevy motor in it. the boat has been sittin some time. the guy who had it hit a log and has a stainless steel propller on it and instead of breaking the prop ( because it was steel) it broke the lower unit. i hve all pieces. as far as i know the trailor is all aluminum but even without a title you could still use it. file for a HOME MADE TRAILOR and dmv will make you a new title and everything. .... I think. but its white with teal and white vinyl seats and it has a little cabin thing in the front where you open up to small doors and walk down in it. it has seats in there for storage and to relax or whatever. my number is 304-629-1606 i do not answer emails so call or text anytime. make me a reasonable offer on the boat and its yours. i was offered 1300 and should have taken it but when i called the guy back he had already left for another state. anyway call or text. thanks for reading.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Maharg!!!! I figured everyone forgot about me by now!!!!

I have not been keeping up with the posts as much as I wish I could...between the rain, midnight shift, waiting on supplies, new comp., and life I have not had as much time to focus on the boat...encouragement and women, what most use a boat to get/use, or vise versa, have been in the way lately...

I have been chugging away at it though, drilling, vacumiming, cutting glass, wiping, cleaning, cleaning, wetting, laying, wetting, wetting more, pushing out air.....
IMG_0603.jpg

I have got all but the top of the inner stringers glassed with 1.5oz CSM. the boat is unbelievable strong now. tomorrow I plan to finish the CSM and start with the 1208. I chose 1208 because I have seen the problems others have had with 1708 laying over corners...hopefully the 1208 makes it.

Some how I talked myself to adding more and more drain holes in the stringers...I guess once you do one you cant stop. PVC and PB made them very easy to glass in...I will drill out the middle after it is all said and done, hopefully sealed from water.

Boat looks great. Nice job on the glassing. Hopefully you can keep us informed more. Sometimes things do get in the way. Keep your stick on the ice.
