Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project *UPDATE*

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project *UPDATE*

Well, I'm postponed from a weekend of work. My mechanic has not completed his work on my motor, due to the TIP O Michigan boat races this weekend. I can't blame him. I'll be watching the races on Sunday. So I'm left to my vices. I need to patch up my trailer wiring and get a few honey do's done to keep mama happy. I'll have time to get started on the stip down next week Sunday.
Have a safe weekend.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project *UPDATE*

Stopped by the boat today to give it a long look over and see where I'm going to start next Sunday. Looks like a lot of previous rivets have been replaced with stainless screws, which will make light work of removing the casting deck and floor. I had to resist the urge to get the screw gun from the truck and get started and I did.
I think I'm going to have a 5 yrd dumpster delivered to the house this week, if I can get one for a good price.
So, I'm planning a trip on Thursday downstate to a wholesale marine store. Hopeing to pick up the fuse & junction boxes/panels, VHF, gauges, switch panel and stereo.
I'll then be picking up some 10 ga wire and foam from my Father-in-Law. He bought a trailer load of foam board and a truck load of wire spools from a contracter last year for his pole barn project and said he wanted the left overs out of his trailer and I could have it all, free of charge. The foam alone is saving me big $$$.
I patched up my trailer wiring tonight and was able to touch up some spots on the trailer that didn't get a thick coat of paint, now that it has rained a few times since last Sunday, a couple of small rust spots made it thru. I got out the wire wheel and cleaned them up and repainted.
I have given my self a goal of splashing this vessel by Sunday, August 15th.
So Sunday the 8th, I have to get it completely stripped down to the hull. Monday night, wheel the rivets and apply Gluvit or Coat-it (haven't decided which). Tuesday night, lay foam and cut/fit the floor/deck. Wednesday night, seal decking and run my wiring. Thursday night, set floor. Friday (taking the day off work), build console, attach console and paint boat. Saturday, Install instraments and controls in console and test. Sunday, August 15th, splash day for dinner on the lake with the family. Kind of an agressive schedule but I thinks its doable. I'm planning on hitting some snags that extend my timeline but sure would be nice to be able to use the boat for the second half of August and all of September before Duck Season starts.

I am looking forward to watching your progress. I just bought a boat that needs a floor. I might be able to help you with the dumpster as well. Where is this marine parts supply store that you speak of. I live in Fenton, Mi. Just south of flint.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project *UPDATE*

I meant to post this last night. When at the boat yesterday, I noticed the bow cap was cracked. Where would I find a new cap? This is the aluminum piece that caps the noise and overlaps the rub rail.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

I would like to first state that my previous post with my rebuild timeline was way off. I am already behind.
Yesterday, I started in. disconnected the controls and gauges from the console, removed the console and seat. Removed the carpet, casting deck and started in on the foam.
All I can say is WOW. the carpet was holding the deck together, all my deck wood was saturated, to the point that when drilling out the rivets, water was coming out of the wood. Same with my foam, the top two inches is not saturated, the bottom 8-10 inches is loaded with water. After removing the foam in the bow, I had almost two inches of standing, traped water. Below is a list of photos from the days events. I will be back at the foam tonight.
You will see a couple of photos with a cardboard mock up of the new console and its new placement.

:mad:GRRRR
Well, almost there. I spent another two hours last night and I think I'm a little over halfway thru the foam removal. It will be another 2 hours tonight and 95% of the foam will be removed. I will still have to raise the fuel tank and get the foam out from underneith it, etc.
The foam around my fuel hose was soaked, I couldn't tell if it was gas or water, it really didn't have a smell but it foamed up pretty good. old gas?

I bagged up all my foam progress from Sunday night before I started last night, it was approx. 200 lbs of foam in 4 - 55 Gal garbage bags.
I expect there to be another 4 - 6 bags of foam.

This phase of the project has me thinking that I'll never do another restoration. But I'm sure I'll forget all about the foam when I see the finished product.

Have a good day.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Last night I was a little tired and not in the mood to bust up foam. So I bagged up all the chipped foam. 6 - 55 gal bags thus far.
I removed the bow rail and stripped off the vinyl from the gunwals.
I went to the dump today, and wasn't I lucky, they raised their rates. $22/cubic yard. I had 3 yrds.
Here is the progress thus far. I'm off tonight and driving to Indianapolis to interview a candidate on Thursday. I will be back to work on the boat Friday night. My goal is to be ready for gluvit and paint by Sunday night.

Lookin good roughshot. Are you going to go back with pour in foam or use the Pink or Blue stuff from Lowes??? Oven Off cleaner does a good job on cleaning the foam residue off the aluminum in preparation for the Gluvit. Make sure to rinse it off real good with Hot soapy water when its done doin it's magic.

Evercoat makes a product called Metal 2 Metal

http://www.evercoat.com/productDetail.aspx?pID=37

that is a GREAT Aluminum Filler. Kinda like Bondo is for fiberglass.

Have you decided on What Paint you're gunna use? Spray or Roll and Tip??

Hurry Up I'm gettin anxious.

I'm just sayin...:D

I'm going to be replacing the foam with industrial, fire retardent foam board. Same composition as the pour in foam.
Thanks for the tip on the oven cleaner. I'll pick up a case from the dollar store on Friday.
And for the tip on the Metal2Metal.

As for Paint, I'm going with Parker's Bay Gray and I will be spraying it.

If I can get all clean by Sunday Night. Next week will be wiring, reinstall foam, deck and new console.

I typically don't get to the boat till 10 or so at night, then work till about 12, 12:30. So its a slow process for me.

Make sure you read the label on the degreasers...I bought some when I was prepping for gluvit and my girlfriend actually read it and it said "not for use on aluminum", so I got lucky.

Looking forward to seeing the rig when she's all done, nice work.

Huron Angler, thanks for the heads up on the aluminum part. My buddy actually just said the same thing when I talked with him at lunch.
Woodonglass, I will lightly sanding the exterior and painting over the solid factory paint. as for the interior, yes, I will be using self etching primer/rustoleum for that. Thanks!

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Well I'm done with thr foam removal. Finished last night about 1am. It took a total of 9 hrs this week to remove the foam and I hauled out 9 - 55 gal bags of foam, probably about 400 lbs.
I have disconnected the fuel tank and pulled all the controls back to the motor. Tonights project will be to remove the fuel tank and the carpet on the walls. I sure hope that the foam removal was the toughest part of this project.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Well, I got a break in my day and was able to get back at the boat. I pulled the fuel tank and took out the foam from around it. All was fully saturated with standing water under the tank.
I also removed some brackets and the carpet from the walls.

Couple Questions:

1. what is the best way to remove the fuel from the tank? I think it has about 12 gal in it.

2. I removed some brackets from the walls that were in place to hold up the casting deck. I just pried them off with the hammer and it didn't seem to disturb the rivet. Can I leave the rivets or should I just replace them?

3. What is the best way to remove the glue residue left from the carpet?

Thanks.

I will be back at it tonight, should just be clean up tonight.
I will post new photos ASAP.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Easy Off oven cleaner will do it. It DOES etch the aluminum IF you leave it on to long 15 20 minutes should do the trick with out damagaing the aluminum. Try it on a spot and see what you think. I have used it it it worked great for me and it made the aluminum VERY receptive to the Self Etching Primer.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Last night I drained the fuel and removed the fuel tank. As it was storming out with lightning on and off, I didn't do a lot but I did manage to get all the scraps of foam out of the boat and I did try the oven cleaner on a spot.

I don't know if I let it set long enough but it did assist in the removal of the carpet residue. However, it didn't even budge the glue.

Anyone have any thoughts on the glue removal?

I'm going to post up a quick thread.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Sure doesn't seem like I've got much done by looking at the last photo but last night I scrapped off the carpet residue and cleaned and sanded the fuel tank. I tested the tank for leaks and its good.
Tonight I'm on to removing rivits to get things cleaned for the new deck. I will also get the battery switch in and wireing. I plan to float test the boat tomorrow to check for leaks and to see how my new fuel tank placement will work.
