Spark plugs for a Merc outboard

I once compared the BUHW and BUHW-2 spark plugs. The BUHW-2 had a slightly thicker ring electrode. That seemed to be the only difference. I do not think it makes a large difference, because my '73 850 and my '77 1500 shared ign systems, pistons, carbs and a whole lot of other parts, yet the...

Slip/moored boat what do you do with your trailer?

Gee, it depends on the HOA. Lean it upright against a fence, comes to mind.

    Spark plug location on coils

Usually the top coil goes to top cylinder... Maxrules likely has a wiring diagram for your motor. Compare the colors of the wires to the coils with the diagram and make sure they match. Also, compare the wire colors on the switchbox to the diagram to make sure no one got creative.

97 Merc 200 carb, slow to plane out and no top end

Reeds were stainless steel? If timing is good, and spark on all cylinders, carbs are next possibility.

    Will a 2001 elpt 90hp lower work on a 2005 90hp elpto?

SEI Engineering make replacement gearcases for OBs. Their application data may give you the answer.

Muriatic acid on stripped outdrive. Is it safe?

Acetone is fine to clean the surface. Paint thinner is OK as well. use a self-etching primer. Rattle can gloss black is fine.

Muriatic acid on stripped outdrive. Is it safe?

Muriatic acid is strong stuff. Likely too strong at full strength for aluminum. Get some nice course, medium and fine waterproof sandpaper and a bucket of water. Sand her down, hose it off, after dry, spray with self-etch primer, and then topcoat. Sanding is not that hard, even by hand.

Remove Driveshaft Housing without Lifting Powerhead?

It would be nice to know what motor. Generally, the upper and lower motor mounts hold the midsection to the transom clamp. The gearcase and powerhead bolt to the midsection. If you unbolt the gearcase, the driveshaft will come with it.

97 Merc 200 carb, slow to plane out and no top end

V6 Mercs do not have the 2+2 feature. Every cylinder on your motor runs continuously. Reed valves almost never wear out. I doubt yours's needed to be replaced. You might check timing at idle pickup and max spark advance. Maybe you messed something up when changing the reed valves. Do all...

    1998 115 (E115SLECM) VRO leaking fuel

    Fuel for older Evinrude/ Johnson

Your first tank of e10 will tend to loosen some old crap in the fuel tanks. Be prepared to change the fuel filter after the first tank. Watch the rubber fuel lines for failure. Most fuel lines have already been changed to alcohol-resistant by now, but keep an eye on 'em. J/E motors after...

Epoxy resin to seal new decking

Polyester resin and some medium weight cloth will seal it well enough. No need for epoxy. Amazon has both resin and cloth for a decent price.

    1996 venom 200 double problems tachometer/reverse

I have a 1998 Johnny 150HPV6. I have had some issues where the shift rod gets hung up due to corrosion, and will not go down into reverse. The fix is to drop the gearcase and figure out what is jamming the shift rod. You might like to see if this is your issue. Remove the cowling. Spin the...

Boat floor soft only around ski locker

I had an '88 SeaRay with a ski well. When they installed the ski well cover they cut the plywood decking out, but did not seal the edges of the plywood. Moisture founds it's way in and rot ensued. Unfortunately, the moisture also rotted the floor of the ski well and the keel support under it...

    Fuel vent question

Gee, your fuel tank looks to be made of fiberglass. If so, the alcohol in today's gasoline can dissolve some of it's components possibly causing leaks. I agree that the tank vent looks unusual. As for your filling issues. You normally want the vent fitting on the tank to be as far forward as...

1987 Mercury 45hp classic 50 control cable anchor

Here is a diagram of the area. There were a lot of 50HP models in 1987, so I had to pick one, but the cable clamp stuff is pretty common. https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury/oem-parts/outboard/1987/1050717/shift-linkage-and-exhaust-plate?ref=1 Most stuff is d/c, but should be avail at...

1980 Avenger weight and hp rating

Gee, I have owned a '74 16' Avenger since 1980. It is rated for 85HP, but I ran a Merc 1500 for decades and now I run a Merc 135HPV6. It has a 3/8" thick aluminum plate covering most of the transom. That dinky aluminum plate on the transom in the photo, is clearly not holding the transom...

    50 hp Merc 1985

Look on the maxrules website for the wiring diagram and year. Your motor's serial no. looks to be a 1982. You probably have the new, common wire colors such as purple for ign power, but those 4-cylinder 50HP motors were really popular, so they were made the same for years after other models...
