Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-B does not go properly

With a test light or volt meter check to see if the ignition “by pass” circuit is working. Probe the + or bat side of the coil when in cranking mode. There should be full battery voltage at that point. No or low voltage is a symptom of hard starting. If so then the problem will be caused by...

Mercruiser 5.0 Oil Pan Replacement Tips

Also replace he timing chain covers. They were never painted because the harmonic balancers covered them. Use the engine’s serial #s to get the correct pans. The 1 piece pan gaskets with the metal slugs are the best. FelPro and some others make them. 1/4” 20 and 5/16” 18 should be the thread...

    Carburetor Comparison

If the replacement carburetor is an automotive and not marine it will not perform right. It has a high idle cam which is not what you want on a marine engine. There are venders that specialize in rebuilding Rochester carburetors. You can send in your old one for an exchange or they will...

'02 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI - Oil pressure switch location?

If you have 1 sender it will have more than 1 wire. Just be sure the wires are not damaged before removing the sender. Sometimes a gauge that has pegged really hard damages it where it will not read anymore. Try to post the serial # of your engine.

    Volvo AQ225 dipstick crossover

If all else fails then try this. Most probably your engine uses 5 quarts of oil. Drain the oil and get a new filter. Put 5 quarts in the engine and get any dipstick that that hits the bottom of the pan, cut and mark the stick where it shows full after starting the engine.

'02 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI - Oil pressure switch location?

Most of the time the oil pressure switch is located just above the oil filter location. There may be 2 senders at that location, one is for the fuel injection and the larger one is the sender. Can you see the back side of the gauge, if so look at the sender blue wire to be sure it is not being...

    Bell Housing - Merc 250 vs 292

It is not hard to drill the hole to mount the starter. Flip the engine over mount the straight bolt pattern starter, be sure it is square with the engine and with some drill guides drill and tap the hole.

    Bell Housing - Merc 250 vs 292

When switching to a 292 you will need a new fuel line since the fuel pump is in a different location, the alternator belt adjusting strut needs to be lengthened and you will have to cut the exhaust hose and extend it about 1.5” with either stainless or copper tubing. I have done this conversion...

    Bell Housing - Merc 250 vs 292

Since the 292 flywheel studs are 1/2” and the 250 are 7/16” the easiest cure is to drill out the 250 flywheel and coupler. You will need some special lock nuts that are 5/8” hex and 1/2” 20 to mount the flywheel and coupler. They are available from some specialty venders. Also available from...

Start at the ignition switch. Get someone to help. With a test light probe the yellow/red wire terminal while the key is turned to start. Follow the wire to the control box and probe the y/r wire going into the main harness. Just near the starter there is a Bosch style relay that the y/r...

Proper info for timing a Merc 140

Always a good thing to check is the condition of the springs and counter weights under the breaker plate. The posts that support the springs and weights will sometimes work loose allowing the distributor to over advance the timing. The weights will actually contact the inside of the...
