Filling holes with Polyester Structural Putty

Actually, Total Boat has a Polyester Structural Repair Putty. That is what I planned to use.

    Polyester resin ?

I just ordered from US Composites a few hours ago. Shipping to Washington State and the total came out just a little bit less than anywhere else I could find.

Filling holes with Polyester Structural Putty

I have quite a number of small screw and rivet holes to fill. They run up to about 1/4 to 5/16 inches in diameter. Structural putty is quick and easy to prep so will it work fine for filling holes like these instead of mixing up peanut butter? Can you use it to fill the overdrill hole size...

Water Pump Question - Alpha 1 w/Closed Cooling

Ouch, those sea water pumps are expensive. I have this Mercruiser part number from a parts diagram, 72774A32 for a 1996 GM 5.7L. I have the V Belt system with the PS Pump high on the Port side and Alternator low on the Port Side. I have a manual fuel pump and fuel filter in the normal 5.7L...

Area near motor mount/transom delamination and crack.

Sorry to hear it. Well they say misery loves company and you will find a lot of company on here including me.. Not sure how far forward my rot goes (haven't pulled up the floor forward yet) but the boat is stripped of everything including the hardtops which had rot also. A lot of work but...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

Thanks, I have syringes but wasn't sure about the number of drops per cc and why the number of drops are different between West Systems and Totalboat.

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

Hmmmm, my laminating resin from West Marine says 12 drops of MEKP per ounce of resin (temp 70 to 90). My laminating resin from Total Boat says 8 drops MEKP per ounce of resin (temp 77). Do different resin manufacturers make it differently requiring different amounts? How does 5cc MEKP in 17...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

Thanks for that info. It helps alot with the mixing. It has been driving my nuts trying to count drops of MEKP. I am using the 1/4 inch chopped strand and cabosil. I think I have been using a little too much chopped strand.

Area near motor mount/transom delamination and crack.

If it were me, I would use one of the vibratory tools with the end cutter to trim away some of that fiberglass to see what's underneath. It looks like in the right side of the picture that there was a place where the wood was not covered and therefore would allow water in. You may find rot...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

I put a thin layer of structural putty between the ends of the stringers and the transom glassed wood. I set the box into place and mixed a bit of peanut butter to spot areas to support it so I can pull the wedges and peanut butter and tab the whole thing. It has been a pain figuring out the...

Water Pump Question - Alpha 1 w/Closed Cooling

I have a new Monitor MON-MFH-5399 standard full closed system. I want to make sure about the flow rates before I do a first start on this engine on the engine stand. The install instructions do not show connection to a sea water pump so I was surprised when I saw the thread.

    Roof Top Equip Mounting Question

I am laying out my roof top equipment and wondering about through bolts or screws. The boat originally had a hailing speaker mounted to the front windshield frame and horns down on the deck at the bow. I decided to clean that up and move them to the roof top so that I don't have lines fouling...

Water Pump Question - Alpha 1 w/Closed Cooling

I saw a note in another thread that mentioned something about the Alpha 1 Gen 1 water pump does not provide enough flow for use with a closed cooling system. I have a brand new closed cooling system setup and brand new dry joint manifolds for my 5.7L Vortec. Is it true that the Alpha 1 pump...

    Engine Replacement/Upgrade

Bondo makes a good point on the Alpha One outdrive. I am scratching building my 5.7L Vortec and working to keep the horsepower no greater than 300hp since that is the spec limit on the Alpha One. Fortunately, my Alpha One has the right gear ratio (I am rebuilding it also) and the reason I say...

Problem with paint after refreshing Alpha One Gen 2

Somewhere there is a discussion on prepping and painting outdrives (I have it printed or maybe on a thumb drive somewhere but not with me right now). That process goes something like this; 1. bead blast (not soda or sand), 2. Alumaprep, 3. Alodine, 4. Epoxy Primer (PPG DP-90), 5. Finish Coat...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

So, I have two lengths of stringer 42 inches each and one length of bulkhead that is 54 inches in length to bed. This will be my first time at bedding stringers. Gap is about 1/2 inch in some places but closer to 1/4 inch in most places. How much poly resin to mix as peanut butter to bed...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

I was able to pretty much cut my stringers to match the transom without any gap hence my question. My aft inboard stringers just run from the transom to the front of the engine bay bulkhead then step in 3 inches on each side to run the stringers to the front of the boat. So, I was able to...

    Stringer to Transom Joint Question

Do you run the stringer right up against the transom wood, fillet and tab that or do you need to put peanut butter between the stringer and transom wood to bed it? Also, is it better or easier to lay a bead of peanut butter and then set the stringer into that or put in small foam spacers then...
