    Winterize

owner may have no legal responsibility, but it isnt the tech with a busted boat getting towed back to shore either. Not saying you need to do a full on inspection of the equipment, but a good working knowledge of your craft is NOT a bad idea. Just handing over cubic dollars and trusting a...

Trying to decide between 3 older boats!

being a frequent buyer of old boats that are in need of a LOT of work (and money....) If I were serious about any of the boats, I would look at them in this order 1) Chris Craft... Known name recognition and at least a "reputation" for being high end. May or may not actually be, but if you need...

Mercruiser 470 crankshaft sprocket play on shaft

is the slop in the fit of the gear/sprocket on the crank snout, or is it the chain slapping? there should be no appreciable slop between the crank snout and the gear/sprocket. If there is, it WILL wear into the crank rendering it pretty much useless. Not to mention the cam timing will be all...

    17 oz 45 deg. bias

cant speak about the glass cloth, but I have used the Bondo resin a couple of times (using it on my current project). Have not had any issues getting a good bond with older glass when adding or repairing in my boats. No mention of wax, but I would not bet against it, there is no tack at all when...

7.4mpi just started running rough and with gas coming out exhaust

I think I would have to agree with you. IIRC, most of the ECU's out there control the GROUND side of the injectors, so current is not running through the ecu. If you have one side of the injectors "off" and the other side is "on" either you have the extremely bad luck of catching it right at the...

    converting from ammeter to voltmeter

thats about what I thought. plan right now is to leave the engine side of the harness intact, as designed and built by Mercruiser. Its still wrapped and in great pristine condition. No sense cutting into this. The boat side of the cannon plug is already loose wire. I will take the orange lead...

    re-wiring the boat

    converting from ammeter to voltmeter

ok, boat is a 1980 vintage galaxy with Mercruiser 120 running gear. I have manuals for the system. I have an unnatural hatred for ammeters, I just dont care for the idea of a single wire running the length of the boat, through the gauge, and back to the battery. too much length for something to...

    re-wiring the boat

ok, as part of a larger re-work on my boat, I am re-doing all the dash wiring. What was there makes a rats nest look organized, and I can also get rid of the individual glass fuse holders and go with a more modern style fuse in a fuse block. What I "think" I need are the following circuits for...

    I need help with this

and if you mean rotten floors, stringers and other structural items, again, we have a full forum for this. Its all repairable, just a matter of how much time, effort and cash you can sink into the boat.

    Black grease from UJoints

as the grease does its job, it isnt unusual for it to turn blackish. as for which caps it comes out of, they share internal channels, so those that have the least resistance will have grease come out of them first. Not much you can do about this.

Alpha 1 Gen 2 U-Joint Bellows Retaining Ring

100% agreed. lots of chinesium parts that dont quite work as advertized or pack it in after a short while..... the internet is a dangerous place for the unwary.

    MC-1 Trim Pump issue.

ok, did a bit of trial and error to figure it out. Check ball goes in first, followed by small spring, washer and big spring with the fitting holding it all in place. System bled and working 5.0 according to specs. saved me replacing the whole valve assy.... not expensive, but time wasted...

    MC-1 Trim Pump issue.

ok, we are working on a 1980 vintage 120hp MC-1 trim pump. Metal reservoir with external control valve. I have function in trim-up but nothing in trim down. I am bleeding the lines at the moment due to it running dry over the previous 9 years since it had last operated. Reverse lockout and...

    Multiple Electrical Issues

imho deoxit may help, but does not restore the connectors to "perfect" condition. best thing to do is bite the bullet and replace the connector with one that is more suited to the marine environment. Once again, it appears a mfg cheaped out, and used a connector that is not weatherproof, and as...

    Timing chain & camshaft replace

its a fairly well known thing in the automotive side of Chevys that the oil pan does not need to come off, BUT it does make the job a LOT easier, both working the cover in and out (there is a small corner on both sides of the lower lip of the timing cover where the seal sits that interferes)...

    Mercruiser MC1 drive (Pre-alpha) Rebuild

repair kit part number from Mercruiser (may be superseded, but all I did was a google search on the part number and got the equivalent) is 25-60342A-2. I got a pair of NOS ones on Ebay for a fair price What I was getting at for the corrosion, is where the piece was stuck to the piston, may...

Alternate controls to replace 1980’s to 1990’s outboard controllers?

not an expert, but the plug should be able to be wired past, just match function for function. Bigger issue in my eyes would be the control cables. can you get them to match on both ends, and are the throws going to be the same, or similar enough to get full function?

    Spreading Manure, again

how what??? TIG process usually has a foot pedal for control of heat (amperage) on the fly. you dont get this with any of the other processes. Either you run with what you set up with at the beginning of your weld, or you stop, reclean and start over with different settings and correct for...
