2004 Merc TKS intermittently missing, running rich, running on.

Dieseling is running rich and or timing off. Richness puts carbon deposits on the piston and head. Those absorb heat and stay red hot. Hot enough to ignite a compressed fuel air mixture. So just like a model airplane engine with a glow plug, your motor runs on after shutting off ignition. Scary...

Rebuild it. Have patience. Be thorough. Very carefully set the float height. Run every passageway and you'll be golden.

1987 chaparral 5.7 rough idle and bog under a load

Adjustment on a Roc is needles, jets and power valve. Those are all calibration parts.

Not on your life. Mercruiser for anything rubber.

Eric, They have more issues in installation and staying attached than they save. At least with the Quicksilver stuff it last for a lot of years - especially if you remove your drive each winter and let the bellows relax.

New to you boat: 1) Compression check for a baseline 2) Pull the drive and do the annual maintenance 3) Replace the impeller, inspect bellows gimbal and u-joints

Gear oil leaking out of lower unit.

Can come from the seal under the water pump. Also can come from the seal at the bottom of the upper gear case where the lower shaft inserts. Can also come from the shift shaft. Or even a funky passageway quad ring between the cases.

Over heating 4.3, 1995 non vortec

Reason I ask is the standard Mercruiser V6 Alpha 1 exhaust has the manifolds going to risers into the Y pipe where everything comes together before splitting into main passage to propeller and the two idle relief ports. I think maybe you need a new mechanic who knows something about mercruiser...

1987 chaparral 5.7 rough idle and bog under a load

Everyone else bought that kit had the same issue. Cool part is they refunded the cost and it wasn't hard to calibrate once read the manual and started at the beginning. Note that the 1409 typically comes 'calibrated' roughly for a 5.0L, right in the middle of the suggested range of motors. I...

1987 chaparral 5.7 rough idle and bog under a load

What carburetor and what was your source? A number of years ago I bought a brand new Edelbrock 1409 carburetor for a 4.3. And as well, bought the Edelbrock 'calibration kit' for the 4.3L V6 motor. It was so far off it wouldn't run out of idle. Had to start from scratch on calibration, which...

Can the base of engine work? Two to bolts under engine are rusted and can

Your gimbal bearing is not fixed. The gimbal function is tight on purpose.

    Mercruiser 3.0 water by-pass theory

Good plan to end up walking back from wherever you boat to. There is a reason things work the way they do. Bypassing will become overheating somewhere in your system. Pull and inspect your manifolds and do the proper maintenance. Cutting corners costs lots more in even the short run.

    Gimbal bearing.

I bought my last one as and from a genuine Quicksilver/merc dealer off eBay, but that was several years ago. You can go to any of the Merc dealers, I usually use performance pro tech but other like other dealers.

I like quiet. I hate having to yell at the wife to be heard, and then not understanding a word she says.

    Gimbal bearing.

I installed a non-greasable last time and have regretted it ever since. Only because it just bugs the crap out of me that manufacturers screw us over with sealed bearings for sales brochures. Example: John Deere sells 3/4 million dollar combines that allow a farmer to do daily maintenance in...

You must of never had any kind of bellows leak! Amazing.

    Slight hesitation off idle 5.7

A valve problem would be the golden answer to your issues. Easy and simple compared to all the other possibilities. Congrats!

    spring vapor lock?

What you might do is connect power to the purple/yellow, which will spin up the fuel pump, and then look in the carburetor without the engine running and see if there is any fuel leaking down the intake while it is just sitting there without the engine turning over.
