    1986 Johnson 30 water pump

Is the powerhead getting hot when running? Too hot to touch? Are the intakes in the lower unit clogged? With the lower unit assembled but not yet connected to the leg, you can test pump operation using a container of water deep enough to cover pump. You can use a drill, but turning by hand...

    1985 Evinrude 25 Starter Wiring

This would be an early 90s rope start. Maybe this looks familiar.

    Johnson trim/lift assist cylinder

Post a model number -- guessing you have a 48. Your best bet might be a donor motor. Part number for the cylinder (48hp) is 0434037. It's around $800(!)

87 Johnson 40 HP Dies on Throttle Up and Full Throttle

Would want to check cylinder compression (post the numbers). If a carb issue, likely a partially blocked high speed jet

    Fuel Problem

Yes, could be that housing seal. Find a kit and replace all the seals and O-rings.

Unable to start and no water out the telltale

One air/fuel mixture screw. You would have an engine idle stop on the tiller handle or on the side of the engine opposite the gear shift. You also can probably purchase a thumbscrew stop that fits on the tiller at the throttle handle. I'll disagree with Sea Rider slightly on the air/fuel mix...

    Johnson trim/lift assist cylinder

Helps lift the motor with very little effort. Lock down and release is a different mechanism -- should be a lever on the left side when facing the motor front. Come with a plastic cap on the end, but tend to snap off.

    Fuel Problem

or may not be carbs. A test for leaking lower driveshaft seal is to spray around the base of the powerhead, then listen for rpm change. Not fatal by any means, but would need to remove the powerhead to get at the seal.

Unable to start and no water out the telltale

Still too shallow. Pump is at the joint for the foot. It's not a lift pump, and proper depth isn't determined by intake holes. Don't open the needle 5 turns. Open 1 1/2 and start, then adjust. Think Racerone is saying these motors are pretty forgiving -- not so with final tuning, however...

    Fuel Problem

SeaFoam is a mix of lubricants and solvents — maybe creating an overly rich oil to fuel mix, or (conversely) loosening up contaminants in your tank and running them into your combustion system. At 1 oz SeaFoam per gallon of fuel, the change is significant and could be exacerbating operating...

    Idle mixture screw

If it starts but won't keep running, try turning the mix needle 1/8 turn counter clockwise (richer -- more fuel). If you can't find the proper setting, lightly close the needle (clockwise) and start over. If it started at 2 turns open, use that as an initial setting. Go leaner first...

    1986 Johnson 30 water pump

Did the powerhead overheat (too hot to touch on top of the head)? The water tube may not be seated in the water pump grommet. If not overheating, run a piece of weedwhacker line up into the tell tale -- far as it will go. Maybe just blocked.

    1958 7.5HP Johnson prop

Don't use an inline spark checker. Buy an open air adjustable tester at an auto parts store, and measure the spark to determine whether the ignition is doing its job.

    86 Johnson 28 Surging

sounds like prop ventilation -- prop is picking up air on turns. Mount with the AV plate even with the bottom of the hull.

Unable to start and no water out the telltale

That's 6 to 8 inches above the pump/impeller, not the intake holes. I would put the water level about half way up the shaft in a plastic trash can. Rotate the the grip counter clockwise all the way to the neutral stop for starting (c.clockwise opens throttle, clockwise closes it).

    Oil/fuel Question

Use a rich oil ratio (24:1 as indicated), and a lean air mix. Initial idle mix 1 1/2 open from lightly closed. H.s about 1/2 open initially, with final adjustment at or near wot. (then go back and readjust idle mix). The oil ratio is critical to engine life. Air mix is critical to performance.

Try synthetic two-stroke oil, but plan on cleaning/regapping plugs as regular maintenance -- Italian tune-up after trolling.

    76 Evinrude 15Hp

Well yes, but it should also idle smoothly. If the carb has been cleaned and rebuilt, try adjusting the mixture screw on the top a bit leaner (clockwise) until it lean sneezes (light backfire -- sometimes not so light) or stalls. Then set it about 1/4 turn richer (counter clockwise). rpm will...
