    Exhaust riser temperatures

i had the same problem with my 4.3 mercruiser vortec motor , after some discussion it was determined that it was normal for different temps . my OCD did not take kindly to me being able to hold my hand on one riser and the other was almost too hot to touch . i made up a set of restrictors to...

    Blown head gasket

i just took a better look at the pics , the steamer holes are blocked by the gasket that was moved over them :) my bad should ware glasses when looking at pics on a small laptop. anyway that said , it has been hot , real hot at some point how it got so is the question. Op needs to go over the...

    Blown head gasket

coincidence ;). good guess would be one side was already blown from age and the other followed shortly afterward looks like the steamer hole was clogged on both sides with rust , this would have caused hot areas in turn heating the gaskets , hopefully there is not too much burn cut and the...

Boat going in reverse but not forward.

there is never a need to be embarrassed when you put the effort to have a go yourself at something and you mess something up. that's where forums full of people that have messed stuff up come from. ill be the first to admit that if it was not for those people i would mess more stuff up ;).

    Johnson 1987 pistons

i used to pull the good piston assembly ,rings, bearings, etc from a motor that had a dead cylinder and banged out crank and stick it in the one i was repairing , just to point out how slack you can be with these motors and they will still run fine , sometimes even checking the bore was an...

    Johnson 1987 pistons

OP , if you had seen some of the hack jobs i did on those old motors back in the day you would not be concerned about just swapping one piston , since its an old motor ,just look around for a used piston without a hole in it and plonk it in there :) , button it up and go fishing . as posted ...

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

late edit : the early crankshaft does not fit a vortec block , the journals hit the casting webbing flywheels are also incompatible. ha ha , i just found the pics , that jolted my memory of what a PIA it was to build that bitza motor :).( picture journals is available if Op is still considering...

Boat going in reverse but not forward.

did you locate the shifting splines in the correct orientation to the shifting rod ?. can you hear the gear attempt to engage at all IE: does the shift make a clunk or something as it would if it was to engage .

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

+1 but i would just recon the original heads and be done with all stock. been there done that building a frankin merk , yea it works well , but the effort is not really worth the result IMHO , swapping from flat tappet heads to roller rocker heads takes a lot of changes IE : push rods ,rocker...

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

you are on the ball with the parts that you posted that need swapping. be aware the vortec has a alloy sump so dip stick will not fit from older V6. later motor also runs a serpentine belt not a V belts so you may want to just check mounting points for brackets , harmonic balancer pully...

    2022 MerCruiser turns-no ignition

can you confirm the 1/2 a tank other than just the gauge reading . the float in the tank can get bent or stuck in turn giving a false reading to the gauge. try removing the sender from the tank and get a visual. you could remove the fuel line after the pump if that is too complicated due to...

1996 15 HP mercury with spark on only one plug

that would mean the CDI is either dead , or it is the wrong version unit for your motor. as i said ! they look the same , but the magic stuff inside is different
