    Project unknown

ha ha , you could call it home made IE: a HM floater or the like. that said , it looks as if it could be an early Hallet as i said before , but upon closer look i think not as it is too vertical in the sides.

Mercruiser 4.3LH backfiring & weird timing

for the cost of the heads to be done V the cost of a reman motor + the work to R&R the engine from the hull. i know the way i would go :). have the heads done and stick it back together . if you are good with a hone you can get rid of most of the glaze that it appears to have on the bores (or...

    Upholstery Question 1

that is how i think they have done my back rests , PIA as i cant bend like a pretzel to get a spanner on the nots to get them. my boat is stored for winter ATM , as soon as i get to it i will check for Zbrackets and update your thread with pics or description, that way your thread will help...

    Upholstery Question 1

on my 1999 Maxum SR 1800 it appears to have studs that come out of the backing of the back rests and held with nuts , it really does look like the back rests were put there when the deck was off the boat so i did not force the issue to take them of when i was restoring the boat. i may have to...

Mercruiser 4.3LH backfiring & weird timing

even although i can do heads myself ,i always find it best to send the heads out to have the valves and seats done . the head guys also set up the guides , inspect springs for tension and surface machine, while they have them, get them to crack test and inspect the exhaust ports for soft spots...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

have you by any chance had a AM head deck fitted or some PO had one and then went back to the original to sell the car ???.

Mercruiser 4.3LH backfiring & weird timing

it could be a combination of that dodgy area of the valve and or broken rings. the piston looks to have a bit of detonation but its hard to say with the pic ,it could just be carbon build up ??. broken rings can show no comp when oil is put in the cylinder , but lets not get to that yet. i...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

sometimes you need to buy OEM battery or a substitute with the same output, a friend went through this recently with a Toyota keyless start, it would not work at all ,i told the owner to replace the battery in the fob , owner replaced battery with a generic one , and had the same issue as you...

2004 Mercruiser 3.0 Won’t start, misfires & runs rough when starts.

i usually set V8 or V6 motors to 750 or close too , OP s motor may need 650. 100 RPM either way when you are going for smooth transition between shifts is not really relevant , i have a hand held digital tach that i rarely use as i go after the smooth shift rather than being pedantic about a...

2004 Mercruiser 3.0 Won’t start, misfires & runs rough when starts.

that's good news that its running well , now you need to set the timing """as per the manual """, if the dizzy was not moved then you probably ???? have the correct timing already ,so best let sleeping dogs be sleeping and not touch it now ( maybe check and see if it is as per manual but don't...

    230A condenser failure

check the ballast resistor OHM reading if you have one on that system , or if you don't have a resistor coil , then you need to replace what you have with a resistor coil. OR replace the resistor coil you have with a new one because the primary circuit has had a melt down and pumping too much...

2004 Mercruiser 3.0 Won’t start, misfires & runs rough when starts.

do the above procedure , make sure the rotor is pointing exactly to #1 lead / pin on the cap when that balancer pointer is @ TDC on compression . the dizzy may have moved and making all your wires misaligned. i would still be redoing the leads both plug and cap ends from scratch jusst to be sure...

2004 Mercruiser 3.0 Won’t start, misfires & runs rough when starts.

best bet is you firing order was messed up somehow . go over the firing order again , the best way i have found to tell people is to pull all the leads , crank the motor , mark an arrow on the dizzy if you want , this will insure your are placing the leads in the correct direction. find TDC...

Mercruiser 4.3LH backfiring & weird timing

have you done a quick stop test and pulled the plugs to check burn patterns , that can be done during comp testing if you choose. turn the key off when running WOT or at the point its backfiring.

Mercruiser 4.3LH backfiring & weird timing

i don't see any mention of a compression test. a couple of mushroomed valves will cause a backfire and timing to need advancing to achieve proper acceleration. lifters pumping up under acceleration or worn camshaft lobes can also make a engine run sloppy under load. looks as if you have been...

Valve Cover Vent putting out excessive smoke.

excessive fuel in the oil. oil too thin for the motor. engine running too hot in the cylinders ,IE pistons cooking because of lean condition > check spark plugs for lean burn . worn out old motor :) . that's all i have .

I'm stumped, overheated 4.3 MPI, water in oil, replaced heads, still water in the oil

i spend the extra to ensure a reliable seal , the OEM Mercruiser gaskets are the best quality i have found for SB boat motors, so who makes them is irrelevant to me , i use them when working on Mecruiser motors because for me its worth the spend to do the job once and know its done right. you...
