i would be working out a way to get a replacement screw in there, if the ear that's still got a bolt breaks it will sink your boat when that pipe pops off. hopefully for your sake it has not got a broken bolt in the hole , its a motor out fix it it has.

I'm stumped, overheated 4.3 MPI, water in oil, replaced heads, still water in the oil

i only use OEM gaskets on any marine engines , especially vortec motors. now :) , about the 5 thou off the heads , that should be OK , however , if the heads have had works done before then a another shop could have taken a good chunk off and it was not realized by your guy. hence why a...

I'm stumped, overheated 4.3 MPI, water in oil, replaced heads, still water in the oil

if i had to guess , the intake has not sealed correctly , vortec intakes do that from time to time if toques are done incorrectly or too much RTV is used to seal pitting. if heads were machined too much that can also create a issue of the intake angle going past limit. as a marine mechanic ...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

sounds like you have a fun project at hand . i for one hate the thought of a in hull engine job when the sump has to be dropped down or taken off . :) i hope you are capable of bending like a pretzel to get at things . the harmonic balancer will need a puller ,most likely a good solid one. as...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

ultra grey RTV sparingly around the water crossover and that's it, modern gaskets are not meant to have sealants used unless specified by the manufacture , and if required , its usually supplied with the kit.

Best way to pressure test an exhaust manifold?

100% as Lou C posted , replace the thing , that patch job may get you by , but its pot luck when its going to fail and most likely write your motor off.

ah ha , long block should have had lash set by builder , just to rule it out , you could ask the builder to recheck or do it yourself to be sure its in spec.

    A couple basic testing questions

i have helped people out at the ramp when their boat wont start using the procedures above , so yea , why not . for that matter , you could throw some fuel on the ground and try to set it alight , if you get fire , then that fuel should at least get a pop from a 2 stroke when you have enough...

    A couple basic testing questions

put you finger on the electrode of the spark plug >>> pull the cord or crank the motor with a drill , you will soon feel / see if sparks are good enough to start a motor. compression that blows you finger off the plug hole . spark in the correct time and enough to make you let go of the...

    F90 shaft swap

as posted the best option is to remove the powerheads and swap them , less effort and will only cost you a gasket. iv done it with a F100 , easy job .remember to put some sealer on the bolt threads otherwise next time you need to remove the power head it makes it hard if a bolt seizes

    Question on cradle design principles

ha ha , i too have built a cradle structure on a trailer to support a refurb , what a PIA that was to work around :) , although i will say i got lots of exercise climbing the ladder 500 times a day. the smashing my shins and knees on light bars and mud guards was no fun either. never again ...

    Question on cradle design principles

it kind of like " how long is a length of string" , each design boat needs to be supported differently when it is going to be taken apart. keep in mind , boats are not built to have structural members removed for repair. so with that said , you need to figure roughly where you are going to...
