Likely OMC or Volvo drive system which in those years was actually identical but painted different colors. Cone clutch drive just like a Volvo SX drive….

Tinkering on the 4.3l this winter...

I think for both Merc and OMC when you went from the 4.3 2bbl to the 4.3 4bbl you went from 175 hp to 205 hp so it's not a big jump but I guess comparable to what you get with the Vortec heads. My pre-Vortec came with the 4bbl Quadrajet and you can feel a definite surge in power when the...

Low Voltage to the Ignition Switch

I had a no crank no gauges condition one year that was caused by oxidation on the glass fuse base and tabs in the fuse box, for the ignition system. Fuse had continuity but there was too much oxidation for current to pass.

    My 84 4winns horizon 195 project.

I don't want to start an oil debate, but look at how the Mercruiser syn blend 25/50 held up in my engine. I have used it for the '23 and '24 seasons so far, before that I used the regular Merc 25/40 conventional oil. And before that (like before 2015) I used Delo 400 40 wt. It also has more...

    My 84 4winns horizon 195 project.

Sounds great. I am doing a few upgrades to my old boat, most will be done in the spring, I am going to take it back to the 'glass shop that painted it in Imron 13 years ago and have them replace the stripes and replace all the old FW Logos with reproduction ones plus the name we never put on it...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

I think alldodge is referring to the rubber engine mounts in the inner transom plate. The bellhousing sits on these mounts….

1988 26 foot bayliner trophy 262 king cobra

I wouldn’t consider any older boats that are wood cored, meaning more than 8-10 years. The work you’d have to do and the time it takes, I’m saying life is too short, keep saving money buy a late model composite boat like 5-7 years old. Old wood cored boats, old I/O power systems is just asking...

Has anyone used the ready lime (not the brand name) to descale their outboard

I thought of using this or barnacle buster in my old inboard, I don't have cooling problems though, so haven't tried it yet. Any risk of damaging gaskets, either head gaskets or exhaust elbow gaskets?

1988 26 foot bayliner trophy 262 king cobra

An '88 "King" Cobra with the small block Chevrolet V8 would still be the standard Cobra dog clutch drive, most parts are out there, but some you have to use used parts, or aftermarket. That said, why make it more difficult you don't want to wind up like me and have a bunch of Cobra spares in...

Can I Prevent Corrosion and a Stuck Gimbal Bearing?

Makes sense, I would coat the internals with a good waterproof marine grease like OMC/Evinrude triple guard…it stays where you put it even if it gets wet….coatibg the grease zerk with gasket sealer like Evinrude gasket sealer or Permatex Aviation also makes sense. The other way water can get in...

How Do I Remove a Stuck Gimbal Bearing?

Congrats you’re officially a salt water marine mechanic!

    Single point drain

If you are only storing it till spring, I don't think it's necessary. My brother had a 2020 Chap with the Merc 4.5, we used to winterize it by draining with the quick drain and watching what came out the bilge (usually about 4 gallons) and then I filled with -100 via the vent hole on the left...

OMC/ Volvo penta 3.0gs ignition fuse keeps blowing

The fuse is sized to protect the wire, if the fuse blows the circuit is drawing too much amperage, therefore the fuse blows. You need to find out why. Check all connections in the ignition circuit for high resistance/oxidation/corrosion. You will need a wiring diagram for your model, start with...

Relocating oil filter on a Mercruiser 5.7?

I didn’t even try to change it with the engine in place because I didn’t want to bugger up the removal of the old one. There’s just no easy way to get at it; Id have to use an inspection mirror just to see it. So as long as I still have to pull the seats to winterize its not a big deal to get...

Is a closed cooling system safe for cooling the engine at higher r.p.m. runs? Pro's& Con's.please.

While raw water cooling has an unlimited supply of cool water, a closed system is pressurized, which prevents localized boiling in hotter parts of the system (cyl heads, valve seats) so if the system is designed with enough cooling capacity, it should provide improved cooling. It also allows the...

Relocating oil filter on a Mercruiser 5.7?

Some will recall I bought a remote filter kit from Michigan Motorz, same as they sell on their turn key motors, with a Canton Racing mount for the adapter, and I asked them about the 30 psi bypass. They said they don't do it, and have sold many engines with the standard bypass, but I felt that I...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 Electric Fuel Pump Conversion

You could install a solenoid with the correct # of terminals. What you have is the 3 terminal style but what you need is the 4 terminal style.
