Can I Tell if Water is Getting into the U-Joint Bellows?

Unfortunately the only way to do that is to pull the drive. Now as a practical matter I have only had water in the bellows once, that was way back in 2005 before I took over the maintenance on the sterndrive. The shop I was using installed a new bellows & gimble bearing. After that I built a...

Rebuild old mechanical Fuel pump or go for Electric Fuel pump

If re powering I’d actually take a pre Vortec because I can still use a mechanical pump and the heated air intake for the Quadrajet auto choke….I think both are more reliable than the electric equivalents…..

    Grease Zerk Fitting Question . . .

I’ve got an original old one of those, it was given to me by a family friend who used to run his own limo business here in LI, he’s 94 years old so who knows how old this thing is!

    Mercruiser 496 MAG Refresh Thread

I would say that anything that might possibly fail and result in the need to pull the engine again, I'd for sure do it now. That includes all possible leak areas on the transom mount/exhaust Y pipe, etc.

Hey Ted don’t you think that trailer is a tad short 😉

    Grease Zerk Fitting Question . . .

Maybe it’s because very few vehicles actually have had grease fittings in the last 30/40 years! My last vehicle that had them is our 1998 Grand Cherokee! Before that it was our early to mid 70s GM full-size cars…

OMC COBRA 5.8 EFI and ESA

http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/ don't know if you have seen this site, but there is some original OMC documentation on this site, that will help explain the finer points of adjusting these, like: setting the shift rod height (very important) how much the travel of the shift cable should...

    Grease Zerk Fitting Question . . .

It's funny how you can be using grease guns for years, and then there's this...I think it took me till about 10 years ago to realize these things are adjustable lol!

Boat leaking salt water - steering pin?

For there to be that much alu corrosion in that time frame, there's likely to be a loose hose clamp on one of the raw water intake hoses or the fitting for them on the inner transom mount. Just a spray of salt water mist + sitting in salty air, can do that.

Boat leaking salt water - steering pin?

On my boat I'm obssessive about making sure there are no coolant leaks and also everything, engine & inner transom, steering system, etc gets sprayed with Corrosion X every year. Still running the original 36 year old oil pan and timing cover, both are known to rust out if not treated often. It...

Boat leaking salt water - steering pin?

I thought the OP was in a salt water area, with a small cooling leak you could have that…

Simple winterization process / draining 4.3gl

My pleasure! I grew up with American cars back in the 70’s so these old school GM marine engines are just like what our Chevrolets had back then even down to the Quadrajet 4bbl. That was the easy part…. The marine stuff is what I had to learn…

Simple winterization process / draining 4.3gl

Sounds like you’ve got it done! Now for next year you’ll be all set! I taught myself this stuff about 20 years ago, started out with the winterizing & fluid changes and over time started doing more & more like the outdrive maintenance, fiberglass work, repairing wiring issues, etc. The biggest...

Simple winterization process / draining 4.3gl

I would disconnect it at the impeller housing and blow air thru it from there; normally I just pour -100 in it till the AF comes out the water intakes on the outdrive.

Simple winterization process / draining 4.3gl

Only other thing is the raw water intake hose; but you removed the drive so I might just blow it out to make sure there’s no water in the P/S cooler…

Boat leaking salt water - steering pin?

Salt water is brutal on corrosion. One small leak will cause a real mess in your engine compartment

89 OMC Cobra Gas Leak Carburetor

The possibilities: Weak battery Corroded battery cables Rusty starter solenoid Corroded terminals on both the starter mounted solenoid and the assist solenoid which is mounted on the engine shift bracket with the trim solenoids. Sometimes water will get under the cover and drip right on that...

89 OMC Cobra Gas Leak Carburetor

PS if that's an original Marine Quadrajet, do not trade it for a "remanufactured" carb, these can be "franken carbs" made up of parts from various different carbs, and some never work right. If anyone tries to sell you a "NEW" Quadrajet, there are none and have not been for many years. Just...
