    Couple of questions

Too bad you did not pressure test the engine before taking the heads off. For the time being take them to a machine shop and have them checked. One source for a complete package is the Copart Auction. They often have boats that were involved in accidents.

5.0GL - No Power at Coil

Are you sure the choke is adjusted correctly? With the key off and a cold engine all that is needed is for the choke butterfly to be barely closed. Have you actually seen the choke be fully open within 2 minutes? Does the choke housing get warm to the touch? Otherwise you did a good job and...

Cracked upper unit housing at spanner nut

The front of the drive shaft housing has to compress and seal the large “O” ring in the bell housing. If you could put the broken piece back in place with some sealer or weld it, it might work. Otherwise you will need another drive shaft housing.

Test stand running 70's 350 water hook up

I would start with a small amount of water to get the thermostat to open quicker then just a little more so that steam starts coming out with the water. That way if there are any oil leaks they will show.

Bad 1970 Mercruiser Engine, Please tell me there is still hope.

There has to be a few marine salvage yards where you are located. I am sure one of them will be able to supply you with a good used set up. Go ahead and have the engine checked out, since it was used in fresh water there is a good chance it can be rebuilt. As far as hull repair and you are not...

Remove quadrant gear and Stern leg is stuck in down position

When lowering the drive do not hold the tilt switch down until the drive hits the end of travel. Just tap the switch a few times until it is full down, if the drive comes down too fast it is possible to either wring off the end of either the tilt motor shaft, the tilt shaft or shear off the...

    Water when pulling stern drive

Rick explained the purpose of the ring. The main thing to prevent the ring from being damaged is to glue the ring in place and give the glue time to set. Trying to hold the drive up has a very good chance to tear the ring. Always have the drive supported at the same level as the bell housing...

    Need to ID motor

The last gray painted OMC engine was in 72. If the wrong oil without the additive has been used it may be possible the camshaft is going away. If you do remove the valve covers pay close attention that each rocker arm moves the same amount. The one advantage that the high profile drives have...

    Seawater Pickup

From the rear view it looks like you can spread the roller mount brackets enough to give enough clearance for the through hull fitting.

5.0GL - No Power at Coil

The picture #355 is a Prestolite, does it have points and condenser or is it electronic? Volvo used Prestolite on all their “V” style engines. They phased in the electronic version in the 80s and used the same body. If there is only 1 wire going into the distributor then it is a breaker point...

    Seawater Pickup

If there is a Home Depot/ Lowes in your area they will have everything that you need in bronze. The clear hose with the cord inside is good enough. That is where I found what I needed for my Donzi for the final connections.

5.0GL - No Power at Coil

Did you replace the accelerator diaphragm when you rebuilt the carburetor? Maybe I read something wrong and you did. Depending on the amount of ethanol is in your local gas supply can have a effect on the diaphragm and make stiff and will not supply enough gas when you move the throttle. If...

    AQ271c overheating

There is something else worth looking at, there is a metered orifice in the thermostat housing which is the bypass when the thermostat is closed. Sometimes they are so blocked up that you cannot see it. If you have a blasting cabinet would be good. The earlier Volvo power steering coolers had...

    AQ271c overheating

The “O” ring that seals the lower gearhousing to the suspension fork is drawing in air when the boat is on plane. Drain the oil. The only tools needed is a set of fractional allen wrenches. Sierra# 18-3888 lower gear unit seal kit. Sierra# 18-2778 water hose connection kit with power trim...

Jeg’s has Moser engineering 1/2” X 20 studs # 8070 You may have to cut shorter. Be careful not to screw the studs against the rear main bearing. Also ARP # 300-8336 1/2” -20 nut with 5/8” external 12 point . 3/4”O.D. 1/2” 20 nuts will not allow a wrench to fit in the pocket of the coupler...

292 inline 6 with prealpha drive for 19.5 cuddy

You will also have to either have a set of studs 1/2” 20 X 7/16” X 20 to mount the flywheel and drive coupling or plan “B” drill out the flywheel and drive coupling for the 1/2” studs that the 292 uses. Be sure to replace the rear motor mount bushings in the flywheel housing.

292 inline 6 with prealpha drive for 19.5 cuddy

Since the 292 is taller you may have to do some cutting if the transom deck area was close to the 3.0. The pan is also deeper so you may have to do some trial fits for bilge clearance and to locate the front mount support for the alignment. The exhaust hose will have to be lengthened. The...

    Lifting the Engine Methods

Your idea of using straps between the heads and manifolds would probably work if they are strong enough. Rig them diagonally or in 4 point arrangement and that should make it happen.
