    Smell the oil...if it has a gas smell it the carbs unseating and running down exhaust tube dissolving carbon turning it black

    Check the gearcase grease...if if blows out out fill screw or is full of metal the foot took a :poop:. If ok then skirt has broke on a piston..

    Lets say the motors are pitched correctly and the OP operates his boat at 2/3 throttle at 30 MPH with a 90hp....a 115HP being pitched more will run the same 30MPH at less throttle using less fuel. My 150Hp on my 24ft toon uses less fuel than the 112Hp that was on it at cruising of 22mph....

    You have to under prop a 2+2 to get it thru the transition to pull skiers/tuber....

    2+2 are good motors as long as propped correctly and used for light water sports. Riding and fishing they are great.

    Carb problem or suddenly running on all 3 cylinder from ignition problem. Need to investigate before running any more as if carb problm you have a cylinder not getting fuel and oil. Compression test first the check ignition

    A tach is a tach. A tach made for a outboard is universal and fits many types. A 4 stroke tach wont read read correctly. Dont know where your read about using Johnson branded tachs and others causing issues ...that is bovine scat.

    Be careful on block as a older block could be a "D" port vs a square port and some older blocks are 8 bolt vs 10 bolt. These will not interchange

    It a good set up for water sports which previous owner may have done. If you going to ski/tube i would leave it be if just a cruising boat go up a pitch.
