Merc Alpha One trim/tilt Q (feeling like a newby)

100% yes you can do it, as mentioned with 3 boats over last 40 years in same shallow cove … no issues unless at full up and higher rpms you will hear the u joint knock

Merc Alpha One trim/tilt Q (feeling like a newby)

I have boated for years (40+) keeping my boats on a lift on a shallow cove (25" deep at dock). You are just fine running the boat at idle /just above idle speeds in the trailer position. Just keep the engine speed below 800-900 rpm. I have to idle out about 5-7 min to get to deep water, so my...

No oil on dip stick after adding 6 liters

I would not over fill it but also would take dipstick to dealer and see if they can compare length as something is wrong here. You may be able to find a universal replacement dipstick that hits the oil level

    Knocking when turning

pull the drive see if the gimbal is fully seated, if not seated drive it in more. if seated replace u joints. my ujoints felt fine but when I changed them you could see wear on the crosses What drive do you have ? generally you can get a ujoint from an auto parts store vs paying the ridiculous...

No oil on dip stick after adding 6 liters

worth checking it is all the way down - also worth checking do you have the correct dipstick. Are you in a hoist , the water or on a trailer? willing to bet that the angle of the boat is affecting your reading. Not sure if there is a drain hose on the pan or suck up only ? if you can drain it...

    Oil, pressure safety switch

these guys may have one - https://www.partdeal.com/ i got a sending unit for my 65 GTO that had a different ohm range so I could make my factory gauge read 0-80 psi vs the factory 0-60. Had a good collection of senders/switches. They had some Hella units which are good OEM quality. Didn't...

Name or part # for MC-1 Hook Thing?

Btw I looked and did not see the hook on any of the parts diagrams . the hook would latch into the top of transom housing , had to be careful to un hook it before dropping the drive… that how the eyelet on our got cracked off

Name or part # for MC-1 Hook Thing?

Yeah the really old ones had a hook my grandfathers 1966 Pen Yan did I think was made to store the drive all the way up. These were the first drives with tilt (not trim ) one hose going to cylinders… tended to leak Down.

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

Always the concern/choice/ decision With an older boat. Best thing if you like the boat repower with a more recent vintage tear out bobtail. have same issue with our 2004 jetski, lots of hours been easy on wallet but it’s up there in years. This winter the seals on crankshaft that seal oil...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

yes gap roughs it in. then set timing. really need a dwell meter maybe know an older guy who is shade tree mechanic or hot rod tinkerer. Very few folks know how to set points anymore. I use my dads old dwell meter from the 1960s as the one I bought in 1990 or so died. this is a great video of...

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

its at the top of the exhaust down pipe attached to the transom, not sure if exhaust elbow needs to come off or if you can slide the rubber boot/hose down to see in there... follow the exhaust path down after the elbow...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

Do the points first this is everything for a points type ignition. Recently took and old (1973) evinrude 9.5 out of the basement been about 8 years since last ran. Would barely idle hard to start etc . Point gap should be .020” was .015” on one .010” on the other filed and gapped them starts...

should more water be coming out of prop

exhaust bellows are open to the water and full of water at rest so will make no difference except maybe more noise on plane. Merc also uses an exhaust tube that is only connected on one end , you effectively have the same thing. Also totally normal for water to come out the idle relief ports...

Is this fuel pump oil switch NO, and 1/8" NPT thread?

sounds like someone added the electric fuel pump to your boat as the first switch you showed is the OEM merc one. Typically the three prong one is used as a universal fit when adding a electric FP or in partial replacement engine packages like Michigan Motorz offers. Heres what they offer...
