Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Would think how close the bulkhead/ Engine compartment is to the front of the crank would dictate this. If belt driven it would be behind the plane of balancer pulley

    Manifold Change

Take the hose off the thermostat housing that brings water up from the outdrive. Should get 3-4 gpm. If not it’s from there back to outdrive. Also make sure the muffs are not impeding the water flow to the drive.

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

Then WTF did it go... I mean I haven't started drinking yet. take out the sender and hook up a mechanical gauge ($25 at autoparts store). When hot if it has 10 psi for every 1000 rpm of engine speed your bearing clearances are good. Very easy to run and engine on the ground

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

Was thinking the dipstick was broken or wrong one ... You put 5 qts in the engine (its a 4 qt motor) and there is nothing in the pan? You pulled the oil pan drain plug and there is no oil? Not sure where it would go unless it leaked out somewhere ?? Cant conceive a situation where the head wad...

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

#1 - block wouldnt crack like that from over heat only from not winterizing - also need to check if manifold is cracked as well. it is worth starting it on the hose and seeing if you get water into the oil . Sometimes will just crack externally and people slap JB weld on it and call it good...

    1990 mercruiser 4.3 no spark

do the compression test as a sanity check other than that would think you are not on compression stroke.

    1990 mercruiser 4.3 no spark

and you have checked the strength of spark with gap tester? basically confirm you are getting spark Was intake recently off and there is possible vacuum leak or just chasing down the no start condition ?

    Manifold Change

I think they use a longer down turn after the elbows to match the riser which arent cheap as I looked into it a few years back. your bolts wont be long enough either so you are probably best to return and get the same size as you took out (assuming they were the correct height above waterline...

Hotter than normal temps. I just replaced the impeller on the sterndrive, and pulled the circulator pump.

Was the old impeller missing pieces? If so they can get caught in the system in places like power steering cooler. Otherwise wonder if hose came of transom housing or possible new impeller failed have seen some after,Arlen ones where metal core spins within impeller

    07 mercruiser 4.3 no start

No get a volt meter and find out where you have 12 vac as outlined. Based on what you say in start you will have 12 v on positive terminal of the coil, hence the spark and running. In run you are losing it hence why it dies. It’s between the key switch and coil you are loosing 12 v . Start at...

    Choke valve position cold engine

Typo dwell, ignition points dwell. Set dwell then timing. yes any tune up is done once it gets to operating temp. Get a factory service manual for your engine. Merc manuals have great detail on specs and procedures. If you have a modicum of mechanical knowledge a manual will help dramatically

    replace Mercruiser 2.5L 1989 with Mercruiser 3.0 1994

that sounds right fully dressed (exhaust accessories etc) there is no real weight dif between a 2.5 and 3.0 they are essentially the same engine

Hotter than normal temps. I just replaced the impeller on the sterndrive, and pulled the circulator pump.

they usually last the life of the boat in fresh water. have never changed one even on 30 yr old boats. replace it if you want but that is not your issue here

Hotter than normal temps. I just replaced the impeller on the sterndrive, and pulled the circulator pump.

you probably were missing adequate water supply from the hose circ pump looks fine did you verify the gauge is accurate

    Choke valve position cold engine

it may have been flooded or overly rich. Opening the choke and throttle will help clear a flooded or rich condition. when operating properly the choke will go fully closed but pops open a bit when the engine starts, then slowly opens more to full open when the engine warms up. Get it running...

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

Exactly -only time I had an issue with the no choke was when I took the boat out in mid october (upstate NY) cold wet and rainy weekend in the 50's. a few min of warm up at fast idle was good to go.

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

either of them the element can be turned to force it open. When I had the element on my old boat just twisted the element such that it never came on. Ran it like that for many years, don't really need it much in warmer weather anyways.

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

No the opposite, if choke was closed the whole time it would explain why plugs are black and soot covered. When doing a cold start stabbing the throttle a couple times does two things. Sets the choke as when cold the choke will close , second the accelerator pump will push some fuel into the...

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

Depends on if it was loose enough that choke wouldn’t open. If choke stayed closed would expect it eventually would foul the plugs and not run Watch what the choke is doing when u get it running
