    Agreed---There is nothing special about this motor.---Very little fuel goes into the lower 2 cylinders at less than 1800 RPM.-----Not a setup / motor I would trust for long term low RPM operation.

    Was at the dealer where I worked over 50 years ago.-----Ordered some parts for a 75 model 6 HP Johnson.----They said those 6 hp motors were the " best " they ever built.----Best means they run nice , easy to work on and simple to repair / maintain.-----New stuff has way to much wiring and plastic.

    Should work.------Internal parts are not the same , but entire unit should work.----It is a step backwards in my opinion.

    The plastic oil pump gear is on the crankshaft.----Just a little bit more than a 10 minute fix !!

    Run with a timing light , one cylinder at a time.----Observe the flashing light when motor acts up.

    Possible overheat with ---S.L.O.W.---kicking in.----Do you install a new impeller every 5 years ?----Warped carburetor bowls ?----Possible issue with shift interrupt switch ?----Remember , I can not see , hear or touch your motor.

    As far as I know you start with removing the lower unit.----Then work your way up to remove the powerhead.----Lots of work.

    The 3 cylinder 650 and 700 ( 72 to 1980's ) were crossflow ( direct charge ) as Mercury called it.----No reason for a crossflow or loop charge to be hard to start!

    That pulse fitting is NOT USED on a regular fuel pump.----The regular fuel pump operates with PRESSURE and not vacuum.-----The regular fuel pump operates off the top crankcase.----The VRO operated off the bottom crankcase.----Remove pulse fitting and put in a pipe plug.

    Oil that has been stored in the tank for a long time.-----Possible a wee bit of water mixed in with it due to condensation.----Oil tank should be cleaned / flushed on occasion.

    Oil may be thicker in cold , cold weather.----There may be a " gel " at the bottom of the tank.----This would limit oil flow through the filter in the bottom of the oil tank.
