    Starter for V8-300-C-A

The access is pretty good. I can see the outside bolt but not the inside one. The paint in that area is flaking off and the bolt head looks corroded. But the 6pt socket fit tight but I was not strong enough to loosen the bolt. I can only get to the boat once or twice a week. It's not in my...

    Starter for V8-300-C-A

I have a new VP #3885317 starter but cannot get the bolts off the old starter. With a 6 pt socket and ratchet wrench handle. At 70 maybe just not strong enough. I will spray PB Blaster on the bolt head but still concerned about snapping a bolt if it's corroded at the threads. The bolts is...

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

It seems now Permatex Ultra Copper is good for the high temp of exhaust manifolds. I know I used Permatex Black but it was maybe a decade ago and it could have been only between the exhaust manifold and riser.

    Help transom leaking

It's good to pull the drive(s) one a year especially in salt water. You can grease the spline, u-joints, inspect the bellows and kind of makes sure the drive does not get stuck (corroded) on the transom assembly.

    Water pump dripping 5.0 GL

Water pumps are made to weep before they fail. If it's not a hose with a leak then replace the water pump. It will get worse.

You want marine quality. Resistance to corrosion and protected from spark that could ignite gas fumes. You can buy aftermarket marine quality like Sierra. Just avoid the parts made for an engine in a car.

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

On all the gaskets. Put a little on with your finger. You want it "wet" with the Permatex Black but not enough so much if any squeezes out when you tighten things.

Slow to no cranking at times

Could be bad solenoid. Or even bad starter. Load test the battery with a carbon pile load tester set to 1/2 CCA for 15 seconds. Read voltage at the end of 15 seconds.

    Outdrive Paint & Prep

So on a trailer there is really no corrosion to protect from. It's a matter of how much time and money you want to spend on painting the outdrive.

    AQ130C Heat exchanger leak question

In some cases heat exchangers can be repaired. An old school radiator repair shop would be the best shot to repair the heat exchanger.

Starter options for 2000 5.0 GL?

The starter for my 2012 V8-300-C-A would spin but not engage and start the engine. Trying it several times and it finally engaged and started the engine. But cannot count on it. #3885317. The Arco was $253. I found one from a Volvo Penta dealer for a little over $300. And of course a bunch...

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

I would use black Permatex as a gasket sealer. The less the better. Too much and some can ooze into the passages and block the flow. You will no see the problem.

    Aluminum DuoProps?

If I was getting a spare prop I would get another set of SS props. It's not trivial to change the props either.

New to me boat with VP 5.7GS

I would send out the carb to be rebuilt by a professional. Many just throw on a carb rebuilt kit but don't get all the passages clean. The professional will use an ultrasonic cleaner. But first check you choke.

    Converting a 1994 volvo penta 7.4 to a 1 wire alt from a 5 wired

Why go to a single wire alternator? They are mainly for hot rods. You need #4 gauge wire, possibly #2 gauge depending on how far away the battery is from the alternator. The problem with a single wire alternator is they don't always properly sense the battery due to load. I would guess...
