1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

Maybe from the old non synthetic oils. Synthetic oils generally have much better flow rates. That being said snowmobiles seem to do okay?

Thats cause OMC oil was not up to the task. McCulloch did it successfully in the 60s with their own oil.

1996 mariner 30 hot start issues -- at my wit's end

It's a carbed motor, perfectly normal to have to give it throttle after 5-15 minutes of sitting. If you don't want to give it throttle buy an EFI motor.

You are probably going to cavitate the snot out of that prop. Exhaust is supposed to go through the prop not out around the blades.

    1975 Johnson 70hp

Youre speed is normal for that motor and set up. Your motor is powerhead rated , realistically 60 at the prop. I ran that same combo and I would recommend a 15" prop to get closer to 5500. 32 was the best I ever got out of it. If you want significant speed increase get an 86 or newer 70 hp.
