MCM 470 Starter Shot? Replacement options?

If you shorten the bolts they will fit. Or have some 1/2” 13 studs turned down to stepped 7/16” 20 so a 5/8” o.d. hex nut will fit. That is what the Mercruiser conversion kit used to come with when converting from the Prestolite to the Delco style. I do not know if the other starter is easier...

Is there excessive movement with the rotor shaft? A worn upper bushing will allow the rotor to not stay centered.

2.3l acts as if flywheel has missing teeth

Check the diameter of the starter centering hole, make sure the hole in the plate is not bent inward. The hole has to match the raised area that registers the starter. Ford marine and industrial sometimes have a smaller hole than the automotive engines. If an automotive starter is forced into...

    Reverse only

That is what it appears to be. It might be possible to replace the cable without removing the drive. Try to get a genuine Volvo service manual for your model.

    Overheating issue.

Whenever you run the drive in a tub you must have the flushout on the drive. The pump will not be able to raise the water enough. Also you want to keep the exhaust bubbles away from the intake grill.

    5.7 ENGINE OIL PAN

The Good Wrench drain thread is 1/2”-20. I used many of those engines as replacements for cracked blocks. Sometimes I had to drill out the drain plug and weld a female pipe thread fitting to it. Then make up a new dipstick tube with some 3/8” steel tubing.

    1969 Volvo 280. /. Donzi St Tropez

Are there any boat salvage yards in your area? If you can locate a rotted out hull with the engine combination that I posted you may be able to piece it together. Try to stay with a Volvo set up first. It does not have to be a V8. The attaching parts on a 290 drive can be swapped around to...

5.7 L 574APARY STARTER PROBLEMS, please help, if possible! Thanks!!

You can try replacing the starter drive with a NEW one and not a rebuilt one. Your starter may still be good but a worn drive can cause problems. When starters are rebuilt the rebuilders usually use rebuilt drives. So, if you have a rebuilder in your area be sure to tell them you want a new...

    1969 Volvo 280. /. Donzi St Tropez

You need to find a 290 set up. The 280 trim system was a PITA the way the trim cylinders were and the hydraulic hoses. Your engine will connect up to it with no problem. The only other alternative would be to find a Mercruiser from 1976- 79 that used the Ford engine for the flywheel housing...

    1977 470 Mercruiser trim issue ( helpppppp)

Gently tap around of the top of the trim motor. If it starts running again then you probably have the brushes stuck in their holders or they are just worn out. If the armature is not pitted and the brushes are stuck be careful removing the commutator head. There is a small ball bearing in the...

Problems setting up a Quadrajet on Mercruiser 7.4 Bravo 2

It may be possible that one of the plugs in the bottom of the float chamber is leaking. That has always been a problem with Qjets. Flip the carburetor over, remove the throttle plate base. Clean the area around the plugs and coat over and around them with JB weld.

Problems setting up a Quadrajet on Mercruiser 7.4 Bravo 2

The vacuum readings, are they with the boat in the water or on a trailer? The last 454 I had would idle @ 14-15 inches on the trailer, it was a Holley, when the boat was in the water it was only around 8-9 because of the back pressure of the exhaust underwater. It was a bone stock 330 hp marine...

Problems setting up a Quadrajet on Mercruiser 7.4 Bravo 2

Was that happening before the contaminated fuel issue? Next time you shut off the engine open the engine cover, remove the flame arrestor and look down the air horn to see if gas is dribbling into the Venturi.

Totally baffling !!! Impeller replaced !! And not pumping

One way to see if water is circulating through the engine’s cooling system is water coming out the 2 exhaust relief holes near the transom. If the copper pipe is not plugged into the pump cover and pocket cover water will only flow out the propeller area.
