    Starter fluid everytime....

If you do use ether on any motor, make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby. Ether can easily catch on fire from sparks that do not ignite gasoline vapor. A motor can seem to have no spark, and then whoosh! Ask me how I know.....

    gamefisher manual

Gee, wern't some Gamefisher's Mcculloch motors? I also thought some of them were Johnnyrude's. Just so you know, a lot of the Eska's had Tecumseh powerheads.

    Data on Vintage Boat

KBB usually has some of the info you want on boats. You probably need to determine the brand name, as I think you will need that to look it up.

    Mercury 115 Tachometer Problem

You need to test the yellow wires for AC voltage when the engine is running. So either stick the voltmeter leads into the yellow bullet connectors, and start the engine, or disconnect the yellow wires and test them with the engine running. If you find AC voltage on the yellow wires, the...

    Mercury 115 Tachometer Problem

Not sure that is definitive. A voltage test would help determine if the VR is good.

    Mercury 115 Tachometer Problem

The voltage drop when running is a bad sign. Did you check for AC voltage at the tach? If you get some, the stator is likely good. Depending on the year of the motor, it will have a rectifier, voltage regulator or perhaps both. Those are more likely to fail (and cheaper) that the stator...

    Mercury 115 Tachometer Problem

Check the voltage, ground and stator signal at the tach. Obviously the battery voltage is DC. Expect the stator signal to be AC. If the voltage jumps around, you likely have wiring issues. if the voltages are steady, the tach could be bad. They do not last forever.

1985 mercury 175hp starter sticking sometimes

There is no way to know from your description. First remove the nut on the Bendix drive (above the gear that engages the flywheel). Remove the Bendix gear and clean the shaft with a mild solvent. Do not use acetone, toluene or other strong stuff as it will cause the starter windings to short...

1984 Sylvan Backtroller Floor & Foam Replacement

If hull is aluminum, PT lumber is out, as is resin/cloth on the stringers.

    Mercury 2.2 hp ignition coil

Ign coil specs are usually nearly a dead short on the primary winding, and a whole lot more resistance on the secondary, but not open. Coils do not often fail. If you have a condenser, that is a prime candidate for replacement. Clean and properly gapped points are critical as is static timing.

VRO conversion to Fuel pump 1994 E60TLERV Evinrude

Maxrules specializes in that conversion. They also have rebuild kits for the gasoline side of the OMS pump.

1984 Sylvan Backtroller Floor & Foam Replacement

Make sure the stringers are sound. After the foam is poured, cured and trimmed, lay strips of poly resin saturated cloth on the stringers and screw the plywood deck to the stringers with stainless steel screws. Cover the plywood with at least two layers of light, saturated FG cloth, or one...

Restoring a trailer vs replacing a trailer

You can always put a tube inside the trailer tires. That will seat the bead. The trailer tires I bought a year or so ago had the beads touching, and I could find no way to separate them and fill them with air. I forced on bead on, put a belt around the tire...all the usual stuff A tube fixed...

    Trailer axle

Eastern marine has a lot of trailer parts. They are indexed by trailer brand and generic. I thought their prices were good.

What size and brand of fuel tank to get?

IMO you either need a fuel gauge to monitor the amount of fuel or 2 tanks. The advantage of two tanks, is that when one runs dry, you can switch to the other and head home. You then refill the dry tank with fresh fuel, for the next trip. Size each tank to allow a full trip or almost a full...

2002 Mercury 150hp starting then splutters and dies

The optimax motors have a water separator on the engine with a water sensor. 4 beeps means time to replace or at least empty the separator. Carb motors do not have them. What do you have?

    Fuel tank repair

You can use some epoxy putty like marine-tex or JB weld and some fiberglass cloth to repair it. Clean the area with acetone, apply the putty and work the cloth into the putty. From the looks of it, if you cover all the pitting with the putty and cloth, it should last a while. Flexing of the...

Johnson 115 Lower Unit Water Pump Tube

There is supposed to be a seal on the top of the plastic water pipe. Also, make sure you have the correct length water pipe extension, as the XL motors use a longer one than L models.

    1994 Black Max 175

Sometimes debris gets under the waterpump base, interrupting flow to the waterpump. The other choice is a head gasket leak. You could put a torque wrench on the head bolts and see if they are tight.
