    is this a new thing that just happened or did the motor quit whilst operating ?. if the fuel pump is activating then check the fuel pressure , spraying starter fluid into the throttle body will tell you nothing.

    if you have the means ? , unplug and check voltage to an injector when cranking with throttle in idle position. then do the same with throttle advanced . Any injector will be fine. report back. ? , have you had the motor checked with diagnostic tool , if not , that is where i would start.

    no idea on cost , i would get the motor out of the boat and asses what the damage is., grinding , not cranking and smoke does not sound promising for much salvage internally. place your order for a short block if you don't have the skill set to rebuild a blown motor .

    perseverance ! it will go back in, just wiggle stuff around till it locates again , i used a small pointy screw driver instead of the pin / screw when i made the same mistake 20 years ago :) ,iv had to help several people since that have done the same , there is always taking the gear box apart...
